POPE FRANCIS:

IN HIS OWN WORDS

“Faith makes us open to the quiet presence of God at every moment of our lives, in every person and in every situation.”

LIFELONG

FAITH FORMATION

Faith Formation classes today for grades K through 6 only! Sessions begin at 9:00 a.m. Faith Formation on November 22: grades K through Confirmation

Holy Rosary/St. John will be serving a soup and bread lunch on November 22, 11:45 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. All Faith Formation children and their families are welcome. There is no fee for lunch, but a free will offering will be accepted.

Ministers of Prayer If you are homebound but would like to serve our parish in a unique way, consider becoming a minister of prayer. Each month you would receive a list of group meetings and parish activities. You would pray for those events as they are happening. There is no greater gift than to pray for others! If you have questions or would like to join our prayer team, please call Mary at 454-6322.

Oh, it’s so good to “sharpen the saw” – in other words, get new in-sights and grow in under-standing – and books are

one of my favorite ways to do this. Here are some to think about: A book I was very glad to have read was The Invention of Wings (2014) by Sue Monk Kidd. It’s the semi-fictional story of Sarah Grimké of Charleston, South Carolina, an important abolitionist living years before Uncle Tom’s Cabin

was written, and Hetty (Handful), the slave she had been given and who she was intent on freeing. The struggle to live as a free woman for both is endearing and heart wrenching at times. This engaging story is told by both Hetty and Sarah in alternating chapters and is based on historical facts about the two. It’s important to take an in-depth look at a historical event, get to know what all is involved, and see where we can take away lessons for today. In The Wright Brothers (2015), David McCullough does just that. To realize just how much research, hard work, thinking, travel, sacrifice, and careful experimentation it took to invent the airplane – and all the ramifications of this – these are beyond most of us. But truly great accomplishments require these. One important lesson we can all take away from all this, as Wilbur said, “No bird soars in a calm.” A classic that has eluded my perusal, but which I finally read, is psychiatrist Victor Frankl’s Man’s Search for

Meaning (2006). The original was published in 1946. While most of us search for the meaning of life, the author, a sur-vivor of four concentration camps during the Second World War, promotes and explores the meaning of suffering. His psychological treatment is called logotherapy – he helps each patient identify meaning in the circumstances of their lives. His foundational work adds remarkably to the field – proponents such as Freud and Adler – but with room for faith (as did Carl Jung). After working for years with women who had attempted suicide, he makes the case for a “tragic optimism” – in the face of tragedy and comprehending the human potential to turn suffering into achievement, guilt into transformation, and life’s transitory experience into re-sponsible action. Wow! Some fiction is always refreshing – and Lloyd Douglas’ Magnificent Obsession (1929/1999) filled the bill. Brilliant brain surgeon, Wayne Hudson, dies as a result of life-saving equipment being used for Bobby Merrick, a rich playboy. When Merrick realizes this, he dedicates his life to a “paying it forward” approach, in imitation of Dr. Hudson, and he goes on to impact the lives of numerous people. (You may have seen the 1954 film version of this story with Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman.) Just don’t just settle for the movie adaptation – with the exceptions of A River Runs Through It, Chocolat, and per-haps Water For Elephants – where the film versions were decidedly better, in my humble opinion.

SOUP SOCIAL Join us for soup, bread and dessert on Nov. 22, 11:45 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in Hastings Hall at Holy Rosary. There is no cost and no need to bring anything. All parishioners from St. John and Holy Rosary are welcome to just come and enjoy good food and fine company!

FAITH FORMATION IS SWEET!

The religious education program is selling candy after Mass for the next few Sundays. The proceeds will benefit the entire parish with new technology purchases, including a larger flat screen TV for video programs. Please consider purchasing a bag of delicious Romolo’s candy for only $1.50.

Women of Prayer Join us for a light supper and some time together in prayer. We meet at 5:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month at Hastings Hall. Our next meeting is Dec. 9. All ladies are welcome!

CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

Next week’s collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) needs your help. CCHD was founded to end the cycle of poverty in the U. S. by funding organizations that help individuals help themselves. With the tradition of im-proving education, housing situations, and community economic development, CCHD continues to make a positive impact in com-munities nationwide. Your contribution will defend human dig-nity and reach out to those living on the margins. Please give to the CCHD collection.

Hometown Heroes Luncheon

Erie Hometown Heroes will sponsor the annual Holiday Lunch-eon for the less fortunate children of our area. MONTHLY MASSES AT GATE OF HEAVEN: every month on the third Saturday at 9 a.m. at Gate of

Heaven Cemetery Chapel, 5711 West Lake Rd.

ARE YOU A PERSON WITH A DISABILITY

LOOKING FOR MORE IN YOUR FAITH LIFE?

Are you someone with a disability or do you know someone with a disability who wants more out of their Faith Life? The Office of Disabilities and Deaf Ministry has a number of groups that will provide the faith-filled social interaction you’re looking for. Call Michael Adamus at 814-824-1257 or email him at [email protected] for more details. You can also learn more about our ministry on the diocesan website www.ErieRCD.org under Catholic Charities Disability Ministries.

ST. JOHN/HOLY ROSARY FOOD PANTRY

is open to all in need. The income guidelines are available at the doors of the church. Distribu-

tion of food is the 3rd Thursday of each month. The next is November 19th from 6-7 p.m. in the school building. Should you have any ques-tions please call Chris and Tom Buchleitner at 490-7796. sss

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: Today’s gospel teaches us UNCERTAINTY is normal. There are some things in life which “no one knows … only the Father.” Marriage and parenting are full of uncertainty for like the fig tree in the gospel, the people we love grow and change.

HOME BOUND CONNECTIONS

We want to update the list of our homebound. If you or someone you know is sick, elderly or homebound please call Pat Fron-zaglia at 440-1987 (Holy Rosary) or Mary Margaret Sklada-nowski at 825-1013 (St. John's). If you, yourself, would like more connection to others in our parish please give us a call.

DONATE A TURKEY

If you can donate a turkey to the food pantry for Thanksgiving distribution, please purchase one when you are grocery shopping. We can keep it in the freezers at Holy Rosary. We also need pasta sauce and canned tuna at this time. Thank you for your generous donations. Tur-keys can be dropped off during business hours at the rectory or you can contact Chris and Tom Buchleitner at 490-7796 to make other arrangements. November distribution is the 19th from 6 -7 p.m.

HOLY ROSARY AND ST. JOHN'S PARISHIONERS: The new schedule for the greeters ministry will be made up soon. If anyone new is interested in becoming a greeter at either the Sat. 4 pm Mass or the Sun. 10:30 am Mass, please contact either Julie at 384-1412 or Pat at 440-1987. We hope you con-sider this important ministry.

DIOCESE SEEKS FEEDBACK

All are encouraged to visit www.ErieRCD.org/planning.asp to view the Preliminary Strategic Plan for Catholic Schools and complete a feedback form by Dec. 1. The Catholic Schools Of-fice and the Catholic Education Task Force appreciate the en-gagement of a variety of constituents committed to Catholic edu-cation and will carefully weigh all insights submitted.

Saint Vincent Chaplaincy

Beside the Sisters of St Joseph who are visiting patients at St Vincent Hospital, Fr. Dennis Martin is there five days a week from 8-4 pm. However, there is no other priestly coverage for emergencies when he is off, as there was in the past. St Vincent is no longer a "Catholic" hospital. In the event that you or your loved one needs a priest for ministry in the evening or weekend (for example, Anointing or Confession), please call the parish.

SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING

We will celebrate a communal Mass with Anointing of the Sick on Saturday, December 5, 4 pm at Holy Rosary Church. This will be the regular Saturday afternoon Mass for our parishes - Second Sunday of Advent - but parishioners who wish to be anointed will receive this Sacrament after the homily. Please sit next to an aisle in the church. We will have greeters distribute a symbol to signify those who are to be anointed. This Sacrament is intended for those who have serious or chronic illnesses (common cold and flu are not reasons) or seniors who are experiencing health issues. The Sacrament includes lay-ing on of hands by the priest and anointing of the forehead and palms of the hands of the infirm or elderly person. The conse-crated oil was blessed by Bishop Persico at the Chrism Mass last Holy Week. Every Sacrament is an encounter with Christ, and in this one, we experience his healing touch here and now. Wouldn't it be nice to bring a homebound or otherwise neighbor or family member to experience this blessing - and that of the gathered Church and Eucharist?
