General Membership Meeting “Going the Distance”
Presentation on Competitive Trail Driving
On March 17, about 25 BVDC members came to New
Bolton Center to hear the “Going the Distance” presentation
on Competitive Trail Driving (CTD) given by the husband/wife
team Cate Peloquin and Ben Fangman. Maryland residents
Cate and Ben have competed in Competitive Trail Riding and
Endurance events for many years. In addition to riding in
events, twice a year they manage multi-distance rides at Fair
Hill where Ben serves as “trailmaster”. Cate is the current
President of ECTRA and is a certified “lay judge” for
competitive trail events. For almost 3 hours, Cate and Ben
shared their wealth of knowledge and long-time experiences.
The interest from the audience was evident as there were
many, many questions asked throughout the presentation! The program began with a video which took us
through a competitive trail event from beginning to end. While the video was about riding, the information
was equally applicable to driving. The speakers pointed out any differences between riding and driving
events as they covered the various aspects. The first thing to realize about this sport is that you are only
competing against yourself, so no one is at a disadvantage compared to other competitors. This is not based
on endurance and it’s not a race. There is a pre-drive judging where the current condition of your horse is
scored - this includes not only the usual metrics like pulse, respiration, and temperature but also every
blemish on the horse’s body is recorded as all of these variables will be checked and scored again after the
drive. The scoring is based on a pre- and post- comparison, so the winner is the competitor with the least
differential in all their scores. Just as in the marathon phase of a CDE, there is a minimum and maximum time
for competing the course with penalties incurred for being under/over these times. These times are based on
an average speed of 6 1/2 mph. The trail is well marked with brightly colored ribbons on trees or survey flags
on the ground. You can choose to start with another competitor
or go alone. Competitors are started with a short time in between
to keep them spaced out.
Quite a few of the attendees plan to do our BVDC “Mock”
Competitive Trail Drive event on April 21st (details on next page).
Ben has already mapped out the trail. Cate will be our judge and
will include lots of instruction throughout the event since she
realizes most of us are new to this sport.
We want to thank Cate and Ben for giving us their Sunday
afternoon to educate BVDC members about this sport! We also
thank BVDC member Debbie Camplone for coordinating this
program for us and Kathy Kozak for providing the St. Patrick’s
Day themed refreshments!

Driving Instructor/Trainer Profile: “Toots” Mahre
Location: Lancaster, PA
Phone: 612-670-0391
Email: [email protected]
Toots Mahre was raised in a small ski area in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. There she developed a great love for the outdoors and nature’s creatures, including a deep passion for horses. Because she could not have a horse in the ski area, Toots pursued her interest through the printed page and took advantage of every opportunity to spend time with horses elsewhere. This ultimately led to formal equine education at both Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming (1996-1998) and the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, Wisconsin (2006-2007), as well as riding instructor certification through the Certified Horsemanship Association (2001).
During her 20 years in the equine industry, Toots has gained a wide range of skills, including 11 years of experience with harness horses. Before moving to Pennsylvania, Toots had the opportunity to work with driving horses in Minnesota, Arizona and Washington State. Her work ranged from commercial carriage driving in Minneapolis and St. Paul, where she also trained new drivers and horses to work safely on the streets, to pleasure and show driving in Arizona and Washington State, where she became involved in combined driving and the intricacies of driven dressage, as well as work with a draft horse hitch and miniature horses. She has also worked exercising and showing riding horses, at a breeding farm, as a trail ride guide for a backcountry outfitter, as a wrangler at a guest ranch, and as a riding instructor for both Western and English riding, including basic dressage and jumping.
Toots attributes much of her success in the equine industry to her other areas of education and training. She is a fully certified Alpine Level III ski instructor with the Professional Ski Instructors of America and also has a background in foreign language acquisition (French, German, and Teaching English as a Second Language), as well as in tutoring. These experiences have developed her understanding of the learning process and advanced her teaching skills. Toots promotes a
progressive step-by-step approach to learning, building a solid foundation of basic skills from which both members of the horse and human partnership can grow and develop.
Toots travels to her clients’ farms to offer driving instruction and training for both singles and pairs. She is happy to work with all sizes of equines, offers exercise driving, and can help you create a conditioning plan for your equine. She also offers riding instruction and training. Toots is a member of Brandywine Valley Driving Club, My Lady’s Manor Driving Club, and the Susquehanna Equestrian Club. Toots is best contacted by phone. Please call her at 612-670-0391 with your questions.

Paper BVDC Directories Mailed To All Active Members on March 7th
At the January meeting, the BVDC Board voted that the paper directory should be included as a membership benefit to all active
members. This is consistent with our mission statement bullet: “Encouraging camaraderie within the driving community.” So
directories were mailed to all 175 active members who had renewed by the end of February. Each late renewer will also receive
a paper directory – within a week or so of when they renew.
If you did not receive your directory yet, please email Bobbi Hager for a replacement copy: [email protected]. The
mail has been really awful lately so if it doesn’t get to you by then, some machine probably ate it!
You will note some changes in the paper directory because - try as we might - we just can’t get all of you to renew by the end of
January when we want to print the directory! This year we held printing open thru February and still only got 175 or our usual
275 members renewed. Rather than print a “skinny” directory that leaves out a whole lot of our driving community, the Board
decided to print a “fat” directory that includes all of the folks who renewed for 2013 PLUS all the folks who were members in
2012 who have not yet renewed. You can tell the difference because your Last Active Year is listed behind your name. So all
you late renewers will have a 2012 behind your name. All you timely renewers will see 2013 in your listing. But the good thing
is that our Directory will have all of our recent member names so that you can contact each other in the spirit of “encouraging
camaraderie.”
The online directory continues to include ONLY INCLUDES ACTIVE MEMBERS. And only Active Members will be able to
access the online directory.
This year’s directory is a lovely orchid. It will be a really beautiful addition to your desk or coffee table.
Thank You 2013 Directory Sponsors!
The following folks donated $5 (or more) to defray the cost of printing and mailing the BVDC Directory to all active
members. Thank you for helping to “encourage camaraderie within the driving community” by supporting our printed directory.

Hannah Polson - Director 2013 (1 yr term)
I joined the BVDC in 2009 when I moved to Pennsylvania from New Hampshire.
I am the chief pony washer, carriage and harness cleaner and general caretaker for Lisa Stroud and Team Landhope. You may have seen me tending to white ponies at shows along the eastern seaboard.
I come from a hunter/jumper riding background and have dabbled some in ridden dressage. I have a 12 year old Holsteiner/Saddlebred gelding named Landsburg, whom I like to refer to as my “jack of all trades” - “master of none”. Due to several horse health and life issues I have only managed to show him at a few riding shows and one driving show, the 2011 Teddy Bears Picnic. I had been in Europe for two months with Team Landhope preparing for the World Pony Driving Championships, and my horse had been standing in a field. I came back from Europe, drove him for three weeks, and then took him to the Teddy Bears Picnic. I competed in
the combined test, Training Single Horse division and placed first. He was a superstar, handled everything beautifully. I hope to show him more this year, that is if I can avoid any hoof abscesses.
I enjoy both combined driving shows and pleasure driving shows and have competed in both. Lorenzo is my favorite pleasure driving show because it is located in Cazenovia, NY where I went to college.
I started to drive in 1997 because of a high school senior class project. I wanted to do something with horses and learn something new. I found a farm near my home in Vermont that taught driving and worked off the lesson fees by doing barn chores. The woman who taught me is like my second mother and I am great friends with her daughter.
My role on the BVDC Board this year is Clinic Committee Chair, so I’ll be working on putting together some clinics that I hope many of you will want to take advantage of!

The Hoopes-Addis Education Trust and
Delaware Valley College
The Purpose and Mission of The Hoopes-Addis Education Trust is to financially support education, activities and projects that teach proper
maintenance, training, and use of the driving equine and provide knowledge and skills for the carriage driver whether they be for recreational driving, carriage pleasure driving
or national and international carriage driving competition.
Beginning in 1981, The Hoopes-Addis Education Trust has received financial gifts which have been used to
provide educational opportunities to those wishing to learn and improve their skills in the sport and art of carriage driving. Grants have been awarded for clinics and seminars sponsored by driving clubs, carriage
driving support for physically and mentally challenged children and adults, support to young drivers to attend
driving camps, written and video educational materials, and training sessions for members selected to
represent U.S.A. Driving teams for international competition.
A careful review of gifts received and grants given since the Trust was established indicated a need to look at
new opportunities to provide education for the sport of carriage driving. There are several colleges and universities that offer classes in carriage driving skills. However, the only institution of higher learning that
came to our attention who required that students take carriage driving classes as a prerequisite to graduation was Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, PA.
Del Val, as it’s known, is listed by both U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review as one of the best colleges in its class located in the Northeast. They have exceptional Equine programs with focuses on
training, business, communication, breeding and science as well as hands on experience in the stable. The success of their Intercollegiate team testifies to the ability of the students in the show ring.
Students graduating from Del Val programs have not only learned the skills of driving and riding, but have also acquired a full education regarding the care and training of the equine and have developed the essential
knowledge of learning how to teach.
Comments regarding the lack of instructors and trainers are received on a regular basis. The Hoopes-Addis Trustees feel that our new project will help to educate and furnish tomorrow’s instructors and trainers resulting in a benefit to the sport of carriage driving on a national basis.
Until 2013 the Del Val driving classes have been taught by adjunct instructors. Thanks to the generosity of
long-time BVDC member, Louisa Plummer, The Hoopes-Addis Education Trust is pleased to be able to provide a grant enabling the college to have a full faculty position.
After interviewing applicants for the carriage driving position Delaware Valley College chose BVDC member
Katie Kashner as the new full time faculty member. Katie was a student of the equine program and
graduated from Del Val with honors. She also is credentialed as a driving instructor by the American Riding Instructors Association.
Currently, the driving courses offered at Del Val are Driving the Single Horse and Intermediate Driving. Driving the Single Horse is a required class for all equine majors. This semester there are 17 students divided
between three separate labs which meet together for their weekly lecture. This course introduces them to ground driving, harnessing, putting to and from there they begin their career as a whip. Also addressed are the various disciplines within the sport of driving, starting a new driving horse, turnout, and tradition.
Each student in the Intermediate Driving class has a project horse, giving them the opportunity to assess the
horse’s training and work toward improving his performance.

It goes without saying that learning the correct way and the safe way is first and foremost in all classes.
Del Val is looking forward to broadening the scope of their driving program by increasing the number of classes offered and also conducting some non-student carriage driving seminars open to the public..
The Hoopes-Addis Education Trust is administered by volunteers. Our expenses are mainly for legal and financial services. All revenue comes from gifts given by those interest in supporting education required for
success in the sport of carriage driving.
The gift received from Louisa Plummer’s estate has enabled the Trust to establish an investment portfolio. We
are hoping to have the portfolio grow so it will generate sufficient funds to support the projects for which The Hoopes-Addis Education Trust is known. Our ability to expand our grants and support our commitments is
totally dependent upon the gifts we receive.

An Introduction to Combined Driving with Andy Marcoux Presentation Handout
Prelim Test #2
Does Combined Driving sound like something that you’d like to do? Are you signed up for an
event, and not sure what to expect? Did you drive in an event, and spend a lot of time
wondering what the heck was going on? Combined Driving is the carriage driving version of
Three-Day-Eventing. It’s exciting, challenging, and most of all fun!

Shelly Temple will present “Driven Dressage, the Basics.” Shelly, who won the FEI Single Pony division
at Live Oak this year, has competed at the Advanced Level in CDEs since 1997. In 2007, she and her

team’s bronze-medalwinning performance and placing second in Dressage with one of only two scores in
the 30s. Shelly competed at FEI level in ridden dressage, is an ADS and USEF ‘R’ Judge in Combined
Driving, and is an active competitor, instructor, trainer and clinician. She serves on the ADS Licensed
Officials and Dressage Committees, and on the USEF Driving Technical Committee. Read more about

Brandywine Valley Driving Club
Board Meeting-Tuesday, March 12, 2013
Board Members Attending- Debby Donovan, Teresa Palumbo, Kathy Kozak, Zana White,
Pat Kozakowski, Jessica Axelsson (phone) Jane Oehler (phone); Member attending: Newt Brosius Meeting was called to order: 7:10 P.M. Teresa Palumbo made a motion to accept the minutes. 2nd by Jane Oehler. Unanimously approved.
Finance Committee Report
Annual Audit: As Chairman of the Finance Committee, Tim Canavan appointed Darrell Martin and Newt
Brosius to the Committee and had them help with the annual limited reconciliation of the Club’s financial
records per the By-laws. Tim provided them each with a printout of the checking account register and the bank
statement for 2012. They selected 12 transactions for further review and Tim sent them the substantiating
documentation. They verified that all was in order and that the beginning and ending register balances matched
the banking statement.
Program Committee
It was noted a Programs Committee chair is still needed. Some topics and people willing to offer
presentations included Dr. Billy Smith (a vet program at NBC), Tricia Haertlein (a slide show entitled
“Carts to Cars”) to name a few.
The General membership meeting for this month is set for Sunday, March 17th with Debbie Camplone on
Competitive Trail Driving at New Bolton Center. At this time, a good number of members are planning to
attend.
Newsletter and Website Committee: There has been much discussion about finding a way to fund more
widespread mailed paper communications, including the monthly newsletter in its current form or some
alternative without needing to charge a separate fee as we do now. Currently the additional $25 charged for the
paper newsletter does not cover the full cost. Based on some member feedback, it seems like fewer people may
be reading the newsletter because they cannot or don’t want to access it online but do not want to pay the add’l
charge. Ideas are still under discussion and a decision is needed soon if the change is to be effective for 2014. Competition/ Show Committee: A competitive trail drive event is scheduled for April 21st at Fair Hill, MD. Debbie Camplone is the
organizer.
A Fun Show has been proposed and is being planned by Jane Oehler at the Buxmont Riding Club for July
27th. An itemized plan and details will be forthcoming at the next board meeting.
We would like to have the Continuous Drive Event again this year in May; Pat Kozakowski will contact
LuAnne Riddle to see if she is willing to again host this at their farm and if so, what date would work for
her. Recreational (Pleasure) Drive Committee: Merrill Walters and his friend Chris have agreed to organize the
Hunt Farm Fun Day for 2013. The date is yet to be determined but will take place sometime in August. This

Old Business:
In an email dated January 29th, Debby Donovan made a motion and Pat Kozakowski seconded to purchase
300 copies of the new updated BVDC tri-fold brochure at a cost of $.75 each by the Homer Group (who
printed the previous brochure); unanimously approved. Brochures were printed and received on Feb 22nd.
In an email dated February 18th Debby Donovan made a motion and Hannah Polson seconded to print 300
copies of the 2013 BVDC Membership Directory at a cost of $1.50 each (the total cost to print 300 copies was
less than the cost to print 270 due to the volume discount); unanimously approved. Bobbi Hager is taking care
of getting the directory printed and mailed to all members.
New Business:
Member Newt Brosius addressed the Board to ask that the BVDC lend it's support to the 2013 Elk Creek CDE
(June 1,2) as well as the Glen Willow CDE (Sept 6,7,8th). Elk Creek is in need of Sponsorships as well as
volunteers-specifically a Hospitality Chair, people to assist the course designer (Lisa Singer) as well as a
stable manager. They are also in need of people who reside locally to house judges. Glen Willow is in need of
a Vendors Chairman, Competitors Party Chairman and contributions. The Board will follow its standard
policy for support of local non-BVDC driving events which is to provide financial support by purchasing an
ad in the show program. Based on the ad costs provided by Newt for Elk Creek CDE, a full page ad for $200
will be purchased for the club.
It was noted by Zana White that a new carriage museum is being planned in Shartlesville, PA and the opening
announced. She will keep us posted on the progress.
Motion to adjourn the meeting by Debby Donovan, 2nd by Teresa Palumbo; adjourned at 9:22 PM
