Introduction

•Forming press/ Press: Machine tool that changes the shape of workpiece by the application of pressure.

•Classification: hydraulic, mechanical, pneumatic

•Press types: straight side, BG(back geared), geared, gap, OBI(open back inclinable) and OBS(open back stationary).

Page 3: Servo drive press technology

Introduction (Cont…) • Most common types: gap frame/ C-frame and straightside press

• C-frame: easy access to the die area on three sides

• Straight side press: vertical coloumns on either side of machine, eliminates angular deflection.

• Servo press: press driven by an AC servo motor.

• Low energy consumption than others.

Page 4: Servo drive press technology

Existing technology

• Hydraulic press- derive the energy which deliver through hydraulic pressure.

• Relatively slower- longer contact with the work, cooling is an issue.

Page 5: Servo drive press technology

Existing technology (cont…)• Powerful class of press, large as buildings, which deliver awesome

pressure.

• Largest hydraulic press- applying 75,000 tons of force.

• Large capacities at lower cost etc…

• Requires external power to feed stock.

Page 6: Servo drive press technology

Existing technology (cont…)• Mechanical press- transforms the rotational force into a translational force

vector.

• Faster than hydraulic press.

• Use- metal forging manufacture and sheet metal working.

• Largest mechanical press- 12,000 tons of force.

Servo mechanism

• Servo mechanism/servo- uses error-sensing negative feedback to correct performance of a mechanism.

• Principle- negative feedback, control input is compared to the actual position of the mechanical system.

• Any difference between the actual and wanted value is amplified and direct the system to eliminate the error.

• Application: automatic machine tools, satellite-tracking antennas, remote control airplanes etc…

Servo press

• Press which uses servo motor for controlling the functions.

• Important parts- Slide, Bolster, Ball screw, Strain gauge, Servo motor.

• Blanking load- load between the slide and the bolster.

• Blanking time- time from contact of punch with material to the breakage of material.

Working principle(cont…)• Output of sound level meter and displacement meter recorded using digital

oscillograph.

Applications• Coining

• Blanking

• Stamping

• Ironing

Page 13: Servo drive press technology

Advantages

• Energy consumption is comparatively less

• Local slide movement for high productivity.

• Improvement of dimensional accuracy.

• Digital linkage with other machines.

Page 14: Servo drive press technology

Disadvantages

• The power cannot be blocked.

• As the servo motor is expensive, the servo press is also more expensive.

• Requires skilled labour.

Page 15: Servo drive press technology

Future scope• The combination of various manufacturing processes can be made possible

by integrating the servo presses.

• The number of driving axes of each servo press can be increased.

• Computer simulation for complicated slide motion of servo presses.

• Slide motions can be achieved irrespective of the location of production.

Page 16: Servo drive press technology

Conclusion

• Future of production process.

• Varying the velocity and motion of slide stroke.

• Allows forming of complex parts in one press.

• Increasing the productivity and saving time.
