Misconceptions

1. I must be pumped up – to be super strong, by sheer might and great spiritual muscle.

2. I must be a veteran – expert level of experience, a virtual guru of the faith.

3. I must have remarkable endurance – marathon sessions of prayer.

Too many of us think that we need to become spiritual superheroes who single-handedly assault the powers of darkness. Jesus didn’t call us to be the most heroic on the planet, just the most available. But often we set conditions before we allow God’s love to flow through us to others.

MARK 16:15-18And He said to them: “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.

As Jesus gazed at the apostles in his last moments with them, he understood he was imparting the future of his kingdom to a crop of available men who far short of expect status in anything but fishing. The spirit behind Jesus’ instructions on how to reach the world was simple: Go and do a small thing. As you touch the people along your path, I will orchestrate my work in your midst and cause your many small things to add up to a great thing that only God could build. I will change the world through you, one life at a time.
