Physical Changes in the early yearsThe infant’s growth:

• A period of rapid growth

• Weight usually doubles by 6 months and is three times birth weight by 12 months

• If a baby was born 6lbs how much will it weigh at 1 year old?

• 18lbs. How many Stones and lbs is that?1 stone 4 lbs

Measuring growth A baby boy is born weighing 7lbs.

What will his estimated weight be at 1 year ?

A 1 year old little girl weighs 18lbs.Estimate what her birth weight was.

Twin A weighed 4lbs at birth and Twin B weighed 3lbs 2oz.How much more will Twin A weigh than Twin B when they are 1 years old.What will their combined weight be?

Motor Skills• These are skills which enable us to move and

control our bodies.

• They can be divided into gross and fine motor skills.

• Both gross and fine motor skills require practise and opportunity to develop muscle strength, balance and co-ordination.

Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills involve co-ordination of the small muscles (manipulation). For example:

grasping, turning knobs, drawing, etc.

Gross Motor SkillsGross motor skills are involved in movement and coordination of the arms, legs, and other large body parts and movements. These skills are used in actions such as running, crawling, swimming, etc.
