Spring 2014

The aim of the Student Residence Hall Project was to provide for the growing needs of the Kansas City Art Institute, designing a new resi-dence hall capable of housing 150-200 students.

Wtih this goal in mind, the challenge of re-thinking traditional layouts and structuring of student housing was tasked to the studio.

Art students spend long, and often erratic, hours creating and ex-ploring, leaving an essential need for respite of mind and body. This implicates a question of physical and emotional hierarchies of privacy. For the creative student to thrive, the option between solitude or social leisure needs to be a spectrum.

The driving purpose behind this hands-on design process was to research a gradual layering of sensory insulation, giving students a wider control over not only their immediate physical environment, but their mental environment as well.

The need to maximize space efficiency pushed a tighter integration of vertical spaces. Draw-ing from my material study, I interlocked and intertwined vertical heights.

The sleeping quarters are interlocked and stacked to fit six students to one living room. Each unit has four twin beds, one ADA acces-sible twin bed, and one double bed.

Each unit is also equipped with two toilets, two sinks, one shower, and a double-height living room.

Each floor has access to quiet rooms for study tucked above the showers and toilets of the floor below.

The corridors of each floor are connected visu-ally and audibly through vertical shafts.

Summers of 2012-2015

The ancient Roman city of Aphrodisias is home to one of the leading archaeology excavations in modern Turkey. The current conservation and excavation efforts are supervised by a joint team of Archaeologists from New York University and the University of Oxford, working primarily throughout July and August of each year. The diverse team also in-cludes Conservators, Stonemasons, and Architects.

The architecture team at Aphrodisias maintains a legacy of strict ac-curacy and patient dedication under the guidance of Senior Architect Harry Mark, FAIA.

The ongoing project of the Architects at Aphrodisias is the thorough documentation of all exposed structures and current trenches. In addition, the team records all major new marble finds and conducts all necessary surveying done on site.

The opportunity to work with Harry and the other team members at Aphrodisias is one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever been involved in. The respect and need for hand drawing skill is the reason I have returned to Aphrodisias for a total of four seasons.

Summer 2014

The South Agora Pool is a uniquely large public space and is home to the largest current excavations at Aphrodisias, and is therefore an area of constant new discovery and documentation. The pool is 170 meters long, and contains evidence for an advanced system of groundwater control in the Ancient Roman city.

From 2012 to 2014, I worked with two other Architects to draw the visible portions of the South Agora Pool. The South Agora Pool was drawn at 1:25 in order to accurately capture the numerous carvings and inscriptions on the pool’s edge blocks.

Summer 2012

The Hadrianic Baths were built in the early second century CE and dedicated to the emperor Hadrian (ruled AD 117-138). The massive limestone walls have been standing since antiquity, and the inside of the chambers and the forecourt were excavated in 1905 and in the 1960s.

The Hadrianic Baths Project is one of the largest current conserva-tion undertakings at Aphrodisias. Over the last decade, the Hadrianic Baths have been slowly preserved in their current condition by a highly skilled team of Conservators.

In 2012, I drew plans of several of the rooms in the Baths, including the circular pool shown right, as well as a longitudinal North-South section facing West. All drawings were done at 1:50.

Spring 2015

The Lawrence Senior Center renovation project was my first experience working with a client. We worked with the marketing director of the Senior Center to reinvision the Senior Center, which shares its building with the Lawrence Fire Department, as a community hub.

Accurate Demolition Plans and New Construction Plans were the focus of this project. My team and I completed a set of Construction Documents for the project, pushing us to realize that renovation projects are a unique challenge when it comes to removing old materials, installing new struc-ture, and even repairing existing brickwork.
