On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Seth Tarachand Ramnath Charitable Ayurvedic Hospital Trust. I am happy to present this Annual Report for 2006-07 together with audited statement of accounts to our well wishers, donors, doctors, volunteers, institutions in public and corporate sector and Government authorities. In some ways the report does not confine itself to the happenings of a single year, viz. 2006-07 but aims at updating the information as on 31/10/2007. Such a reporting will enable all concerned, including the Trust, to know where we stand and plan future actions.

The last twenty months have seen hectic activity in the hospital in several areas of development. The result is for the readers to see.

During the construction period the patient community had to face, and will face, some inconvenience for some more time. We are grateful to them for cheerfully living with the situation. The hospital’s eighty years experience has been generally that despite constraints of inadequate infrastructure the patients have been satisfied with the services given. This has been confirmed by a recent finding of a team of researchers from Gokhale institute of politics and Economics, Pune. According to them, Tarachand’s patient satisfaction ratio (PSR) is 84%. We feel rewarded by these findings and congratulate the doctors, nurses and other staff for this. At the same time, the hospital is fully aware that along with the modernization now under progress, a great deal of effort has to be made to develop our human resource, improve upon systems and procedure, undertake drives for reaching to the community and strengthen hospital administration to face challenges of the modern times and growing expectations of the patients.

Finally let me assure our well wishers: a needy and under privileged patient has always remained central to Tarachand’s existence and will always remain so in future.

Now a request. Please share this copy among your circle of friends and associates and thereby help us reach a wider section of the community.

SETH TARACHAND RAMNATH CHARITABLE AYURVEDIYA HOSPITAL, PUNE.

The Trustees of Seth Tarachand Ramnath Charitable Ayurvedic Hospital,

Pune, take great pleasure in presenting this Annual report, together with audited

statement of Accounts, for the year 2006-07. The year under review has been

a water shed year in the 80 year old history of the hospital.

Modernization

For the past couple of years the hospital Trust was planning major

improvements and up-gradation of the hospital premises, including new

construction; as well as providing new equipment and modern instruments; and

adding new services for the benefit of the patients. It is now seen that the entire

scope of work for the current phase would involve an outlay of Rs.8 crors.

A substantial amount of this will be needed for purchase of modern instruments.

The construction and up-gradation plans are prepared by M/s. V. V.

Badve & Associates, a noted firm of Architects which is specialized in the

matter of hospital planning and design. They have to their credit designing of

some of the modern hospitals in India, including Escorts hospital Delhi and

Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital, Pune.

Actual work commenced after Bhoomi Pooja was performed on 15th Aug,

2005. Civil work is expected to be completed by 31st March, 2008.

Some related steps taken for speedy implementation of the project include

arranging bank loan to provide for emergency; organizing a Construction

Committee; and establishment of a Development Division to act as a focal point

to oversee all aspects of modernization including fund raising.

Salient features of the new construction / up-gradation

The new construction centers around the in-ward departments and Eye-

care centre, leaving out OPD, Nursing school and other areas such as Dental

Unit, Canteen etc. They will be taken up in the second phase of development.

After a series of discussions with members of the Construction

Committee, Donors, Members of Governing Council Board of Trustees, well

wishers, the following decisions were taken.

Bed Strength be restricted to 240.

The civil work be done departmentally to cut down cost of

construction.

A new floor be added to the existing building which will

house the Gynaecological and ward, complete with facility

like operation theatres, labor room and incubators.

6 operation theatres be provided for.

Two lifts, a specious Porch and a Dhanvantri Mandir be

provided.

“Panchkarma” which is Ayurveda’s gift to the world, to

receive more attention by modernizing the existing wings for

men and women.

Various prepared facilities to be appropriately linked with

the donors, if they wish.

Considering the rapid up-gradation of technology,

reasonably higher outgo on modern equipment and

instruments be permitted. This will benefit students, doctors

& paramedical staff to serve the patients better.

Practical training of the students of Ayurveda.

One of the major objective of the hospital Trust as enshrined in its constitution is to provide for practical training of the students of Ayurved. During the year the hospital provided professional training to over 450 students (both undergraduate level and post graduate level) of the Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalay.

With the on going improvement in infrastructure, and availability of better equipment and latest instruments, the hospital hopes to serve the student community better. A mention is made elsewhere in this report of the students, who secured high positions in their annual examination in the financial year 2006-07.

Nursing School

The Nursing school was established in 1969 for the training of nurses. A.N.M. (Auxiliary nursing of midwifery) course of 18 months duration is conducted. The course is affiliated to Maharashtra Nursing Council. Every year 20 students who pass 10th standard examination are admitted for the course.

Dai Training Course

With the repaid increase in the number of senior citizen, some of whom need services of an attendant, a special course called “Dai Training Course” has been designed by “Swa-roop Vardhini”, a well known NGO in Pune. Tarachand is happy to be associated with these efforts. The course has commenced only recently. As many as 35 women have enrolled for the course. Their practical training is done in our hospital. The Dai Training Course is yet another example of Tarachand joining hands with a reputed NGO to provide trained manpower in an area where its need is acutely felt.

Free lunch programme

The Manav Seva Trust, Pune, has been organizing free lunch to the in-ward patients of the hospital for some time now. Presently Mrs. Meena Malani is preparing and serving the food on their behalf. The food chart is prepared under advice from the hospital’s dietitian.

The above arrangement has greatly benefit the in ward patients. The hospital is indeed grateful to the Trustees, members and donors of the ‘Manav Seva Trust’ for their active role in helping the patient community have been provided to 1.25 lakhs free meals as of now (31/10/07) since start of this service.

Annual Grant-in-aid from the Govt. of Maharashtra

During the year Trust received a sum of Rs.89,30,000/- as grant-in-aid

from Government towards salary cost of essential staff. As the hospital’s

activities will increase in the near future, both vertically and horizontally,

recruitment of additional staff will become imperative. We hope the

Government will sanction us some more need based posts.

Tarachand is most grateful to the authorities for timely releasing the

funds.

Grant-in-aid from Dept. of AYUSH, Govt. of India

The dept. of AYUSH, Ministry of Heath and family welfare, Govt. of

India, are likely to release a grant in aid of Rs.50 lakhs, and another grant of

Rs.10 lakhs, under the centrally sponsored scheme, to the Tilak Ayurved

Mahavidyalaya. (TAM). As is known Tarachand is a teaching hospital for the

students of TAM. The said grant when received will be spent for the

improvement of infra-structure of Tarachand Hospital.

Grant-in-aid from Pune Municipal Corporation

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has unanimously passed a

Resolution in its standing Committee Meeting as well as the General Body

Meeting approving a grant in aid of Rs.50 lakhs to Tarachand Hospital in view

of its present needs for financial support for construction. The hospital Trust

records its sense of gratitude for this gesture. (The PMC has, once again,

reiterated this resolution in its meeting on 23rd October 2007.)

As per the existing rules governing the affairs of the Municipal

Corporations in the State, the proposal will require approval of the Urban

Development Department of the Government of Maharashtra before a budget

provision is made by the PMC. We hope that the municipal authorities will soon

make a formal proposal to the state Government.

Felicitations, new appointments, awards etc.

Dr. Suhas Narayan Parchure, Managing Trustee, turned 60 on

5th July, 2006. Throughout his life he has been a great champion for the cause of

Ayurved. He was felicitated at a public function on 20th Aug at the hands of Dr.

Patangrao Kadam, Minister for Corporation, Govt. of Maharashtra.

Dr. D. P. Puranik, Principal, Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalay and

ex-officio Superintendent of the Tarachand Hospital retired on 31st Aug, 2006

on reaching the age of superannuation. He is succeeded by Dr. R. N. Gangal

who is working for this hospital for the past 34 years.

On the occasion of the hospital’s Annual Day function on 10 th Aug. 2006

These colleagues and their supporting persons are responsible for timely

performance consistent with meticulous observation of standards, efficiency

norms and securing economy in labour, supplies etc. They have been

performing these functions with dedication. The Trustees records their

appreciation for their services.

Establishment of Tarachand Rugna-Mitra Pariwar.

It is proposed to organize an informal group of volunteers to provide

support services, including fund raising, for Tarachand Hospital. A nucleus has

been formed whereunder well wishers of Tarahcand regularly meet for

exchange of views.

Honorary work

A public charitable Trust working in the health sector can function only

with an army of voluntary workers. The hospital Trust is fortunate in this

regard. Ever since its inception 80 years ago, the hospital administration

consisting of Trustees, members of the Governing Council and members of

Managing Committee are giving their services free and are extremely frugal in

expending funds, in discharge of their functions. Likewise Pune’s medical

fraternity (both Allopathic and Ayurvedic) are giving their services free, again,

from the inception of the hospital. Today we have 82 doctors on hospital’s live

register. Professionals in other disciplines like architecture and engineering,

accounts, audit and finance, management training and HR development, law, document.doc

administration etc. are giving their service free or nearly free. Annexure I shows

the names of the doctors and other professionals engaged in voluntary service to

the hospital. We are grateful to all of them.

Donations

The drive for donations which was initiated in 2005-06 continued in

subsequent years. As on 31st Oct 2007, the Trust received donations of

Rs. One crore one lakhs thirty fore thousand seven hundred eighty five.

(Rs.1,01,34,785/-). promises in hand are worth Rs.53,48,415/- Details are

provided in Annexure –II.

A salient feature of these donations is a very strong community support received from the hospital’s well wishers who have been, or were, residing within its vicinity. Not only that the hospital has received their generous support but, importantly, most of the donors participated in group meetings convened for the purpose of donation drive. Their own action inspired, and hopefully will inspire, others in the days to come. We are indeed very grateful to all these well wishers of the hospital.

Lions Club’s Eye care Centre

Lion’s Club of Pune Central I in association with Lion’s International

under their SightFirst programme are likely to provide funding towards

instruments and running cost for 3 years for the eye care center. The matter is

under discussion with the concerned authorities.

Dental Unit

For the first time in the history of the hospital it has joined hands with another social organization to provide medical care to the poor patients. A dental unit has started functioning in the OPD wards in association with the Rotary club of Pune (Ganesh Khind RI District 3130, Maharashtra). Necessary equipment and instruments are provided by the Rotary Club. Services of a Dentist and other supporting staff are also provided by them. The unit started functioning from 25/06/2006.

Keeping in mind the general structure of charges in the Tarachand Hospital, the charges for dental treatment are reasonable i.e. nearly 20% of the charges in the general hospitals in the city.

In the last 15 months, 1081 patients took benefit of the Dental unit’s services.

Other Health programme

The hospital is in the forefront of implementing at the behest of Pune

Municipal corporation national health programme such as pulse polio, TB Dots,

immunizations, school health check up etc. A monthly report is sent to the

corporation as per prescribed procedure. The following statement shows the
