Settlers Farm Campus R-7 Term 1, Week 8, 22nd March 2018 Dear Families, Can you believe that it is week 8 of the first term of school already! As usual the time has flown by quickly and it has seemed so busy. We are currently in the process of establishing another Year 1/2 class and parents of those students have been notified about the process. While we do not like disrupting classes after the beginning of the year, our numbers have warranted us taking this step as we still have the majority of the year to follow. This new class will begin at the start of term 2. Monday night was our AGM and I would like to thank all of the community members who attended on the night. Our newly elected Governing Council for 2018, which includes ongoing members and new members, is as follows; Jo Clark (Governing Council Chairperson), Amy Hutchison (Deputy Chairperson), Tarsha Crumpton (Secretary), Kelly Maynard (Treasurer), Rachel Richardson, Val Kamilow, Quang Thanh Duong, Kylie Smart, Janelle Williamson and a particular welcome to; Melissa Bou, Janeane Dadleh-Bullen, Heather Smith and Kayla Feltus. We have only two remaining Governing Council parent positions available. If you would like to join Governing Council then please ask for a nomination form from the front office. The council voted to continue meetings on Monday nights 6:30-8:30pm twice per term. The dates of these meetings can be made available to you if you are interested in coming along. Interviews are commencing on Tuesday 3 rd April (in two weeks) and will continue through to Monday 9th April. A separate flyer has been sent home that provides you with step by step instructions. If you need any further assistance please call Ann in the front office. A computer is also available in our front office if you do not have internet at home or if you would like to book online from school. If you require an interpreter for interviews this is included in the online booking process. Sharing of information between home and school is vital to the learning outcomes and wellbeing of students so I highly encourage all parents to make a time to meet with their child’s teacher. NAPLAN testing for year 3, 5 and 7 students is occurring 15 th to 17 th May (Week 3 Term 2) this year. “Catch ups” for students who miss any of the tests are facilitated in the afternoons on those days and include Friday 18 th May. Years 3, 5 and 7 students are all encouraged to participate in the NAPLAN tests. Schools cannot decide to withdraw a student. Parents may withdraw their child based on religious beliefs and/or philosophical objections to testing. Withdrawal of your child from testing must be done by formal notification. This proforma is available upon request and must be completed prior to NAPLAN week, therefore Friday 11 th May. NAPLAN is a national assessment of learning, currently in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy. The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has responsibility for the development and management of this program. There are national protocols for test administration to ensure consistency across the states. During the dates listed above we ask that students in these year levels, or composite classes that include these year levels, attend school on time so that they do not disrupt testing. Interruptions to classes are kept to zero where possible, so that students have optimal conditions for concentrating on their task. This year students will be offered a snack and water prior to the test so that their brains are nourished. NAPLAN results are not expected before September. Arriving at school soon will be the enrolment forms for year 8 2019. A ’starting secondary school’ pack is usually provided to support parents through this process. When these packs have arrived they will sent home with the date they are due back in term 2. Please note that no school staff will be onsite on Thursday 29th March (day after sports day) as we will be at a training at another venue. OSHC will be operating on that day—bookings are required. Settlers Farm Campus R-7 Term 1, Week 8, 22nd March 2018

Dear Families,

Can you believe that it is week 8 of the first term of school already!

Interviews are commencing on Tuesday 3rd April (in two weeks) and will continue through to Monday 9th April.

NAPLAN testing for year 3, 5 and 7 students is occurring 15th to 17th May (Week 3 Term 2) this year. “Catch ups” for students who miss any of the tests are facilitated in the afternoons on those days and include Friday 18th May. This proforma is available upon request and must be completed prior to NAPLAN week, therefore Friday 11th May.

AQUATICS 2018

In week 6, the year 6\7 students went to the West Lakes Aquatics Centre.

This is a recount on all the activities they experienced including

snorkeling, surfing, sailing and kayaking. We separated into 9 groups so

we weren’t doing the same thing at the same time.

In snorkeling the students got to feed and swim with the fish. There was

a choice to go out a little deeper to see more fish,

they got a little bigger the further away from the

sand you went. There was many tiny fish in the

shallow water as well, so swimmers without much

confidence didn’t miss out.

In kayaking the students learnt how to make a raft

with multiple kayaks in case of an emergency at

sea, river or any body of water. It was two people

in each kayak. The students in the same kayak had

to communicate to

successfully travel in the lake quickly. They had a

decision whether to jump off the kayak, capsize or

neither near the end of the session. But before all

that excitement, they learnt how to use paddles on

the land so they knew what to do out in the lake for

about 5 minutes.

In surfing the students were taught

how to keep balance on a surf board. They first talked

about the dangers in the water, landmarks and what

animals are in the ocean. Some people even

encountered crabs!

In sailing the students had a trip around

the John Dyer Lake in a sailing boat. It

was a calming journey for the students

as they heard the water rushing beneath them. The wind

directions changed depending on the colour of the water.

Fortunately, there was enough wind for them to have a

great time.

The day spent at Aquatics was an amazing time for the

students. We are grateful and fortunate to have an experience like this

and that Leadership allowed this event to happen.

Morialta Trip G01, G03 and G04

On Wednesday 14th March my class (G03) went to the Morialta Conversation Park with G01 and G04. When I got to school we waited excitedly till the bus

came and then we got in the bus and drove to Morialta. When we got to Morialta my class was the first to go on the playground. The playground was made of wood and it was held together by nails. I really liked the playground. There was a maze and if you went to the back there were big rocks you could climb. There was also a big slide which was fun. The playground was huge and very enjoyable.

After we played we got a clip board and piece of paper to record the different animals that we could find on our hike through the park. We were lucky enough to see a koala, kookaburra, rainbow lorikeet, lizards and some other birds. Then

a guy named Jack gave us a guided tour. He told us aboriginal stories and about the environment. We went into a cave where the aboriginal people stayed

back then. We walked up so many stairs to get there and my legs started hurting. We walked back, played on the playground for a while and walked to the bus. We went back to school, watched a movie because we were so tired

and went home. It was a fun day! I really liked the tour and the playground.

It was AMAZING!!!!!
