What is the purpose of life? Our life is to learn , to improve ourselves, we

are born in ignorance we don’t know anythingexcept the present before us. We have to do goodwhich will have a good effect on the people. Fromour parents we learn the basics of life and throughour guru we learn to meet the challenges of life.We have to evolve ourselves, purify our soul.

What is our swadharma, how do we identifyour karma bhoomi?

We continuosly are in the process of purifyingand evolving into higher beings through manybirths. Our earlier life, likings and tastes are passedon into the current birth and that is projected

Short sleep ups risk ofpremature death

People who sleep for less than six hours eachnight were 12 percent more likely to dieprematurely than those who get the recommendedsix to eight hours.

The study by the University of Warwick andFederico II University Medical School, Italy, provides evidence of the direct link between shortduration of sleep and an increased chance of dyingprematurely.

The research also notes that consistent overlongsleeping (over nine hours a night) can be a causefor concern. While, unlike short sleeping, overlongsleeping does not in itself increase the risk of death,it can be a significant marker of underlying seriousand potentially fatal illnesses.

The study looked at the relationship betweenthe level of habitual duration of sleep and mortalityby reviewing 16 prospective studies from Britain, the US, European and East Asian countries.

The study included more than 1.3 millionparticipants, followed up for up to 25 years, withmore than 100,000 deaths recorded, said a Warwickrelease.

Francesco Cappuccio, professor the Universityof Warwick and consultant physician, said: "Whilstshort sleep may represent a cause of ill-health, longsleep is believed to represent more an indicator ofill-health."

Spirituality and managementthrough our talents. We have to nurture them andbuild on them . But if the sanskar gives us wrongfeelings , we must correct it and move towardshigher evolution. Environment, our parents , ourbirth , do play a role in our life’s journey . “at alltimes we have to realize that purusharth is ourduty”.purusharth has to performed continuosly atall times.

What is success in life? Nothing happens without hard work.

Purusharth is the only way to success anddevelopment. “Luck” that is punya of last life doeshelp you sometimes but not always. Apart fromyour environment, your consent on the path of lifeis a major contributor. Your aim, direction and theconsent you give to that decision moves or acts asa catalyst towards success.

What is failure in life? There are no failures in life; setbacks are path

to higher evolution. That should never put you

down. You may lose sometimes but that should notdeter you from your path. Spider’s web is brokenmany times but it doesn’t stop it fromreconstructing it time and again. Life is forcontinuous improvement and setbacks calls forimmediate improvement. Defeat is your ladder tosuccess.

Examples of inspiration for the youth?Bhagwan Bahubali is a striking example for the

youth of today. He renounced everything that hegot and attained the supreme. His message ofAHIMSA, TYAG, MAITRIYA and DHYAN iseternal. With AHIMSA you get joy, through TYAGwe get SHAANTI, through MAIETRIYA we getall round development and through DHYAN weget SIDDHI. Chakravarti Bahubali the victor afterdefeating his elder brother Bharat renounced allmaterial pleasures of the world and attained thesupreme, became Bhagwan Bahubali. There canbe no greater example of motivation for the youth.

There is a small remote village in the KottayamDistrict of Kerala called Nettasserry. There lived afamily of famous kerala tanthriks called KaladyBhattathiris. “Kalady” is their family name and“Bhattathiri” is their surname. The male membersof this family were known commonly as “KaladyBhattathiri”. It was believed that Lord Ganesha wasvisible to them and their mystical powers were beingderived from him.

Once, A Bhattathiri of this family had gone tosee “Trissur pooram”. From Kottayam, Thrissur ismore than 100 miles away. On those days there wereno vehicles and people used to go by walk. Theywill start a week before and keep on walking in themorning and by the darkness gets thicker they usedto take shelter in any temples or nearby houses. Likethis our Bhattathiri too started a week before theTrissur pooram. He was accompanied by a friendwho is a Namboodiri (Another sub division in theBrahmin community of Kerala) after two or threedays journey they reached a desolate place. Timewas too late. Still they decided to continue theirjourney as there was no sign of temples or housesin the nearby area. Though tired and hungry theycontinue their journey. Suddenly two young ladiesappeared in front of them. With a seductive smilesthose young beauties came to them and asked in asoft voice

“Brahmins, where are you going? Don’t youknow this is a dangerous area? Usually nobody willpass through this route after the dusk.”

Though shivering with fear and hunger theyreally got attracted towards those ladies and toldthem.

“We are coming from Kottayam and going toTrissur for participating in pooram. By the time wereached here it was too late. No houses are here inthe visibility and we did not have our dinner too.We are tired and hungry”

“Ok”. One of the ladies replied with a smile.“We are not Brahmins. Still if you don’t mind youcan have dinner at our house. It is very near.”

“And…” Another one continued with a temptingsmile. “If you are not in hurry to move, you cantake rest too for the entire night.”

More than the thought of food and shelter, thecompany of two beautiful young ladies made themto take a decision without thinking much. They wentalong with them. After a walk of few minutes theyreached at a big bungalow. Three ladies who seemto be the maid servants came out and took someinstructions from the two young ladies and wentback. As the maids went inside one lady told.

Thantrik Stories from Kerala - 1

SOORYA KALADY Part I“Now come in. First you can have a bath and by

that time the dinner will be ready.” The other onedirected them towards bath room. After taking bathboth the men sat for dinner. Sweet ladies came therewith a lot of variety of dishes and served them withlove and care. They never felt ashamed to crack somedirty jokes too. Both the men were so happy thatthey really took it as a blessing to be there in thatlonely area at that time. So they were able to enjoynice food and company of two beauties. After thedinner both the men were taken to different bedrooms by each of the two beauties. The coat and thebedroom walls were decorated with flowers andgolden articles. Different fruits were kept in a silverbowl on a table near the bed. Two men were reallyin cloud nine.

As the lights went off in Bhattathiri’s room theyoung lady changed her shape. Well decorated hairshave fallen down and started spreading over her face. One tooth each from both ends of the lips came out. With a boisterous laugh she bowed her face to him.Suddenly Bhattathiri realized that they have gotcheated. These ladies are not human beings but“Yakshis” ( Yakshis are a group of fairy women whocharms ,tempts and seduce men and at the end killthem and suck their blood.) But it was too late thenas her case neared his she inserted her extended teethinto his neck and started sucking blood.

At the same time in the other room Namboodiriwas inviting the lady to sit beside him. But she wasnot ready. She asked him in turn to remove the bookhe kept beneath his pillow. This Namboodiri was astaunch devotee of Goddess Durga and it was hishabit to chant “Lalitha sahsranama” or the holythousand names of Goddess Durga every day in theearly morning. So he used to keep a book of thatalways with him and keep it under his pillow whenhe sleeps. Because of the power of “ Lalithasahasranama” the yakshi was not able to go nearhim, leave alone killing him and sucking the blood. As she continued pressurising him to remove thebook he developed some doubts. At the same timehe heard some noises from the adjoining room whichresembles the sound of crushing bones. Suddenlyhe realised the situation. He understood the fact thatthey were not ladies as they thought but Yakshis andthe one went inside the room with Bhattathiri hadalready killed him and might be chewing his bonesnow. Trembled in a blood clotting fear he kept onchanting different holy rhymes of Goddess Durgatill he fell asleep. Next day morning when he wokeup, to his surprise he saw no bungalow there. Insteadjust two tall palm trees were there. (Palm trees arebelieved to be the seats of Yakshis) Now he

understood everything clearly. The bungalow, servants, food etc were just an illusion created bytheir magical power and they killed Bhattathiri.

Sad on the demise of his friend and shocked bythe whole incidents Namboodiri decided not to goto Trissur and instead returned to Kottayam. Therehe went to his friend’s house and narrated the wholeincident. Though it was a shock to Bhattathiri’s wifewho was pregnant at that time and cursed the fatefor making her a widow at such a younger age sheslowly adjusted herself to the situation and later gavebirth to a boy child.

As per the prevailing customs of that time theboy got his education as he grew up. And when hebecame around fourteen years old he came to knowabout his father’s death at the hands of a “Yakshi”from his mother. Then he decided to kill that“Yakshi” and started learning sorcery and connectedrituals to get the strength for achieving his goal.Besides he started penance too to please the “SunGod”. Years after the continuous penance Sunappeared in front of him in the form of an old saintand advised him some divine hymns which will givehim magical powers. Besides he provided him witha text of different hymns and rituals which he canrefer in case of any doubts. He started learning thosehymns and rituals and practiced at various placesfor different purposes. Thus he became famous as“Soorya Kalady”. Being successful in all his effortshe became confident. He decided to perform asacrifice where Ghee and other holy things will beoffered to holy fire along with chanting hymns andholy spells to take revenge on the Yakshi who killedhis father. As the ritual progressed all the “Yakshis”were dragged to the spot with the magical power ofthe hymns. He asked all of them to reveal that whohad killed his father. All denied doing the same. Thenhe ordered them to take pledge on the holy fire thatthey will never tell lies and repeat the same. All butone did the same. Soorya Kalady Bhattathiri askedthe Yakshi who was not ready to take pledge on fireabout the reason. Knowing the punishment she isgoing to get if she took a false pledge on holy fireand afraid of the magical powers of the hymns, sheconfessed to him that it was she who killed his fatherand requested to pardon her. But mad with angerand the thought of revenge he was not in a mood tolisten her words. He tied her up with the magicalpowers of his hymns and sacrificed her in the holyfire. Just before dying she cursed him that he willdie within forty one days due to suffocation.

To be continued.

Trouble started, Chidambaram said, during theNDA rule from 1999 to 2004 when the IPS intakewas drastically reduced.

"In 1994, '95, '96 and '97 when the Congresswas in power, the annual intake into IPS was 98,96, 99 and 84. In 1998, the intake was reduced to36," Chidambaram said.

"Only 36 IPS officers each were recruited in1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001, in place of therequisite number of 85. In 2002, the governmentincreased the number to 56. But it was only in 2003that the intake was increased to 88," Chidambaramsaid.
