Natural approaches to joint careWith glucosamine and omega-3

Healthy Joint Arthritic Joint

What is osteoarthritis (OA)?- the complicated text book definition!

• Osteoarthritis is primarily a disorder of movable joints characterized by an imbalance between the synthesis and degradation of the articular cartilage, leading to joint damage, pain & inflammation

Risk factors for OA

Body build

Arthritis in the family Difficult

pregnancy/birthSmoking

Trauma

Misshapen joints

Repetitive use: -occupational -leisure

FactorsFactors

AgeOverweight

Osteoarthritis

• As lifespan increases, the pressure on load bearing joints also increases

• Arthritis can affect any joint but hips, knees and lower spine are most commonly affected

OsteoarthritisNo longer a disease of old age

• Osteoarthritis - No longer a disease of old age– Begins in our 30’s, 20’s or even

younger– Tell tale twinges not felt till 40’s

and 50’s

• Professional sports players may be at more risk of early joint changes– Repetitive use of certain joints

increases risk

The healthy joint

• Movable joints are made up of bone, connective tissue (cartilage, tendons, muscles and ligaments) and synovial tissue

Cartilage

Synovial fluid Muscles

Tibia Fibula

Ligament

OsteoarthritisThe symptoms

• Cartilage degeneration• Pain and inflammation• Muscle weakening• Bone weakening and

fragmentation• Loss of mobility and quality

of life• Eventual need for joint

replacement surgery

The osteoarthritic joint

• Doctors used to think that failing cartilage caused osteoarthritis. Now they know it’s a complex process involving muscles, tendons, bones - even genetics

Cartilage wears away & body comes less capable of replacing it

Synovial fluidcan become

depleted making joint

less capble of absorbing

shocks

Musclesweakened with

old age, causing greater strain on

joints

Eroding cartilage causes bones to grind

and flake producing bone

spurs

Ligamentsdamaged & weakened

OsteoarthritisThe main symptoms

• Inflammation and swelling around the synovial joints

• Cartilage degradation

How glucosamine works

CHONDROCYTES(THE BUILDERS OF

CARTILAGE)

CARTILAGE(A WALL/BARRIER AT THE ENDS OF BONES

THAT ACTS AS SHOCK ABORBER)

GLUCOSAMINE (HELPS FORM

PROTEOGLYCANS)

. . used by

. . to create

Chondroitin

• Chondroitin is present in cartilage and connective tissue and is involved in the attraction of fluid that lubricates the joint

• Connective tissues are continuously being remodelled as they wear away during activity and are them reformed afterwards

• As we age, we become less efficient at renewing these tissues (especially cartilage)

• Like glucosamine, chondroitin is a building block of proteoglycans (one of the main structural components of cartilage)

• Hyaluronic acid is a major component of synovial fluid which is the lubricating fluid in joints

• Whilst chondroitin is a natural amino sugar already present in the body, it can not be easily obtained from diet as it is found in only a small number of foods

Glucosamine Clinical support

• Glucosamine lays the foundation for the everyday building of connective tissues around the joints including tendons, ligaments and cartilage, important for the smooth working of joints.

• “The results of a recent study has proven that glucosamine treatment significantly slows or may even prevent total joint replacement for patients with knee osteoarthritis”

O Bruyere, K Pavelka, L C Rovati, et al. Total joint replacement after glucosamine sulphate treatment in knee osteoarthritis: result of a mean 8-year observation of patients from two previous 3-year, randomised, placebo-controlled trials. Osteoarthritis and Cartilage 2008; 16:254-260.

Glucosamine Further clinical support

• “Long-term treatment with glucosamine sulfate retarded the progression of knee osteoarthritis”Karel Pavelka, Jindriska Gatterova, Marta Olejarova et al. Glucosamine Sulfate Use and Delay of Progression of Knee Osteoarthritis. A 3 year, randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind study. Arch Intern Med. 2002;162:2113-2123

• “The long-term combined structure-modifying and symptom modifying effects of glucosamine sulphate suggest that it could be a disease modifying agent in osteoarthritis”Jean Yves Reginster, Rita Deroisy, Lucio C Rovati et al. Long-term effects of glucosamine suplhate on osteoarthritis progression: a randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trial. The Lancet 2001;357:251-56

• “The result suggest that glucosamine supplementation can provide some degree of pain relief and improved function in persons who experience regular knee pain, which may be caused by prior cartilage injury and/or osteoarthritis”R Braham, B Dawson, C Goodman. The effect of glucosamine supplementation on people experiencing regular knee pain. Br J Sports Med 2003;37:45-49

• “The findings of this study indicate that glucosamine sulfate at the oral once-daily dosage of 1,500mg is more effective than placebo in treating OA symptoms”Gabriel Herrero-Beaumont, Jose Andres Roman Ivorra, Maria del Carmen Trabado et al. Glucosamine Sulfate in the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis Symptoms. A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study using Acetaminophen as a side comparator. Arthritis and Rheumatism. How omega-3 works

REDUCE INFLAMMATION

(BY ACTING AS A NATURAL ANTI -INFLAMMATORY)

OMEGA 3’s (IN COD LIVER OIL

& FISH OIL)

STOP DESTRUCTIVE

ENZYMES(THAT BREAKDOWN

THE CARTILAGE)

. . both

. . and

Cod Liver Oil / Omega-3 Clinical support

• Cod Liver Oil / Omega-3 helps to keep joints and muscles flexible by slowing down cartilage degradation and reducing joint pain and inflammation

• “The results of a five-year study show that cod liver oil can reduce the amount of anti-inflammatory drugs taken by Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients by over 30%.”

B Galarraga, M Ho, H M Youssef, et al. Cod liver oil (n-3 fatty acids) as an NSAID-sparing agent in RA. Rheumatology. doi;10.1093/rheumatology/ken024

Omega-3 / Cod Liver Oil Further clinical support

• “Fish oil supplements containing EPA and DHA reduces the requirement for NSAID usage in patients with mild Rheumatoid Arthritis.”CS Lau, KD Morley and JJF Belch. Effects of fish oil supplementation on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug requirement in patients with mild rheumatoid arthritis – a double-blind placebo controlled study. British Journal of Rheumatology 1993;32:982-989

• “The results suggest that Omega-3 PUFAs are an attractive adjunctive treatment for joint pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis”Robert J. Goldberg and Joel Katz. A meta-analysis of the analgesic effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation for inflammatory joint pain. Pain. 129 (2007) 210-223

Working in synergyOmega-3 and glucosamine

Cod liver Oil/omega 3 slows down

cartilage degradation and

reduces inflammation

Glucosamine helps rebuild new cartilage

and connective tissues
