Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

General Facts

• The list might have included the Great Wall of China if they had known about it, or Stonehenge if they’d seen it.

• These places were beyond the limits of their world.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria • The Lighthouse of

Alexandria was the first lighthouse in the known world at the time of creation.

• It was also the tallest building except for the Great Pyramid.

• The lighthouse was probably built on the island of the pharaohs.

• There were three levels to the lighthouse.

•The first level is believed to be over 200 feet high and 100 feet around.

•You could eat on the first level or climb all the wall to the top.

The Hanging Gardens• Location: on the

east bank of the Euphrates River (50 km south of Baghdad, Iraq)

• The actual gardens didn’t really hang.

• Pillars of asphalt and baked brick held dirt for trees and plants to grow out of.

The Hanging Gardens cont.• There are two theories as to who built the gardens.

1. King Nebuchadnezzar built it for his wife because she was homesick for the mountains.

2. That Queen Assyrian built it for pleasure.

• Water was diverted from the Euphrates River with a series of buckets.

• The gardens are the only wonder that archeologists do not have physical proof of.

The Temple of Artemis

• Over the years there were many temples to the goddess Artemis.

• Each built on top of the other and each better than the last.

• The last temple contained bronze statues of Amazon warrior women and many other things as well.

• It measured 425 feet lengthwise, 225 feet in width, and had 127 columns each 60 feet high.

• The lower part of the columns had carved figures on them.

The Colossus of Rhodes

• The colossus stood at the entrance to the harbor on Rhodes.

• Like the statue of liberty it was built as a symbol of freedom.

• It was the same size as the Statue of Liberty.

• The colossus was the most easily destructed of the 7 and was destroyed soon after creation.

• The pedestal of the colossus was 50 feet high.

The Great Pyramid• The two lesser pyramids

are often included in the list of wonders but the actual wonder is the Great Pyramid.

• The length of the Great Pyramid is 756 ft on each side and it was 450 ft high.

• Each block is estimated to be 2 ½ tons in weight.

• The pyramid and the two surrounding it are perfectly aligned with the compass.

• It was built by King Kufu.

The Temple of Zeus

• Thirteen columns supported the roof.

• The temple was located in Olympia, Greece.

• The statue was 22 ft long and 40 ft wide.

• In Zeus’s right had stood a figure of the goddess Nike, his left held a scepter topped with an eagle.

• The statue's skin was made of ivory and the beard, hair, and robe of gold.

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

• The Mausoleum was a tomb for the King Mausolus and his wife Artemisia.

• It sat in a courtyard atop a platform.

• On the outer walls were covered with statues of gods and goddesses.

• At each corner were statues of warriors.

• It lasted for 17 centuries.
