Bringing Laughter and Learning Together In the Hands of a Child

”Student learning improves when lessons incorporate hand-on projects or crafts.” As a teacher or homeschool parent, you may hear these types of comments over and over, “how do you incorporate fun crafts and activities into your studies and curriculum?” In the Hands of a Child has the best and easiest solution – ready-to-assemble lapbook Project Packs! So, what exactly is a lapbook Project Pack? A lapbook Project Pack is a hands-on tool that you can use with your children in place of boring and monotonous worksheets. Lapbook Project Packs can be used with any subject matter that you are studying and they can be used from preschool through high school! Lapbook Project Packs include all the information needed in our research guide as well as all the templates needed to complete the lapbook. How are lapbooks made? Traditionally lapbooks are made using manila folders, but feel free to use your imagination with cardstock, oak tag, poster board, etc. Students make miniature books and graphic organizers of many different types, sizes, shapes and variations to glue inside the lapbook. These miniature books will be used to address key points in the subjects being studied as students write information inside them, in manageable chunks, that keep them interested and focused. In addition, Project Packs are easy to store, are an instant review tool, a learning scrapbook, and a ready-made portfolio of your student’s studies. What supplies are needed? File folders, colored paper, colored pencils, adhesive, a pen or pencil, and scissors. How can In the Hands of a Child help me with lapbooks? When you purchase a lapbook Project Pack from In the Hands of a Child all of the work is done for you - the parent/teacher, but not for the student. Our lapbook Project Packs contain all the lessons, in the form of an informational research guide, activity questions, reproducible miniature books templates and complete instructions that help the student create his or her own lapbook. In the Hands of a Child is the only lapbook provider that has a full line of lapbook Project Packs that reach across the curriculum covering:

• Geography • Literature • Reading • Science • History • Math • Bible • And more!

Lapbook Project Packs from In the Hands of a Child are available in eBook, printed book, and CD formats. Visit www.handsofachild.com and learn how you can put laughter and learning together in the hands of your child today!

Activities and Instructions

1. Write one interesting fact about each of the Seven Wonders. Fold Instructions: Over and Under Book – Follow the illustrated instructions included with this activity to complete the fold. Answer each prompt under its flap.

2. If all of the Seven Wonders were still in existence, and you could visit just one of them, which one would you choose and why?

Fold Instructions: Slit Tab Book – Cut a slit on the dotted line. Fold book in half and slide tab into slit. Open book and write answer inside.

3. On a map, color and label the countries where each Wonder is or was located. Create a key to identify which Wonder was in which country.

Fold Instructions: Map – Folding is optional. You may choose to simply mount your map or fold it in fourths and attach the back of the last fourth to lapbook.

4. Imagine that there is a consideration to add an Eighth Wonder of the World. Suppose suggestions for it are being taken. Now, do an internet search using the words “amazing ancient structures.” Choose one structure that you feel should be considered and write a letter of at least two paragraphs that explain what it is and why it should be chosen for this position.

Fold Instructions: Envelope Book – Keeping title on top of envelope, fold side tabs in and glue to inside back of envelope. Fold top flap down. Write answer on notepaper, printing out and using as many sheets as you need. Fold notepaper in thirds and store in envelope.

Creating a Lapbook Base

Basic Lapbook Base Open a file folder and lay it flat. Fold both right and left edges toward the center so they meet and close like a pair of shutters. Crease firmly.

Base with Single or Double Extensions Complete the basic lapbook base. Open base and lay flat. Cut another folder in half or use a sheet of cardstock for the extension. Lay the extension in the center of folder at either the top or bottom. (You may add two extensions if

need be; one at the top and one at the bottom). Attach to base with clear packing tape.

Single Extension Double Extension

Double Folder Base Make two base folders. Open them and lay them side by side with outer flaps

pointing straight up, not flat. Where the two flaps meet glue them together. Fold center flap to one side, fold both shutters in and

close folders like a book.
