    Sep Vortoj, Sep Mondoj

Sep vizaoj rigardadas de via korspaco. Atente observu, ili farias unu.Sep Montoj; iu siavice farias via piedbenkto.

Sep Arboj staras sur la montopinto. Ili estas la savo.

Sep vortoj, simetrie penditaj, sur tempo kaj lango ekvilibras.

Sep Mondoj la suno orbitas, plenaj de devoto.

    Sep steloj silente realecon konturas.

Sep formioj, senvizaaj, senmontaj, senarbaj, senvortaj, senmondaj, senstelaj. Sepeca tempo; laalia flanko estas malplena.

    Seven Words, Seven Worlds

Seven faces stare from your heart-space. Look intently, they become one.

Seven Mountains, each one in turn becomes your step-stool.

Seven trees stand on the mountain top. They are salvation.

Seven words, hung symmetrically, balance on time and tongue.

Seven worlds circle the sun, full of devotion.

    Seven stars silently outline reality.

Seven formations, faceless, mountainless, treeless, wordless, worldless, starless. Seventh-time; the other side is empty.

I - Intoning - notesGather silently outside the performance area and, very quietly and asynchronously, begin intoning thefollowing pitch (d4) either 2 minutes before performance time, or during the applause for the previouspiece. This pitch will be the reference pitch for the rest of the work, so it is very important to be ableto remember it and sing it at any time.

Next, process into the performance space and onto the stage (should there be one.)Begin very softly and cresc. to mf by the time you enter the performance area. Seefig.A for the procession configuration. The stage setup is shown in fig.B.

Once everyone is in position, the singers should sit cross-legged. It is important that the tonic pitch never be lostduring the entire procession. If the performers wish, pillows or a rug may be used to sit on, but if any pillows orcushions are used, all of the performers should use them.

After everyone is seated and comfortable, continue holding thetonic for 10-15 seconds.

    II - Seventh-Time - notes

Voice 1: Still on the note 'd', repeat the word group (a) faster each time. Additionally, slap yourthigh on the 'unu' for each repetition. For the first time, raise your hand in the air first, tosignal to the other singers that this section is about to begin and they should start countingrepetitions. Drop out words when repetition becomes difficult, but maintain rhythm. example:

'unu - (rest) - tri - (rest) - kvin' - repeat. When it becomes too fast to sing all of yourwords, simply repeat 'unu' while slapping your thigh. When the other singers have all held theirnotes, (and you are repeating 'unu' at an insanely fast tempo) stop.

Voices 2-12: Starting on repetition number 3, chant the text (still on 'd'), one syllable at a timecoinciding with the pattern of voice 1. As time goes on, speed up, asynchronously with the restof the group so that by the end of the text, you are neither with voice 1 nor with anyone else. The last word "malplena" should be as fast as possible. Hold the last syllable 'na'.

Sep formioj, senvizaaj, senmontaj, senarbaj, senvortaj, senmondaj, senstelaj. Sepeca tempo; laalia flanko estas malplena.

    Interlude III - notes

Voices 8 - 10: wait 5" and move slowly with each other as indicated on the movement chartbelow. Repeat the music until you have circled the group completely and returned to youroriginal positions. You should maintain strict time to avoid getting out of sync with each other.

Voices 1-7 & 11-12: As 8-10 circle you, make a general diminuendo so that by the time they returnto their positions, you are silent. While getting softer, perform random, subtle accents on yourpitches, interjecting an occasional consonant and changing your vowels with each iteration.

    VII - Quodlibet - Notes

All stand simultaneously (watch voice 1), and beginning with the front row, form columns asthe beginning, but now reversed, and process out of the performance space. (See diagrambelow.)

Starting with your first movement, sing any 7" of music from the piece. Do not franticallyflip from page to page to find your next passage; an approximation of a passage frommemory is preferable to this. At the end of the 7", sing another 7" of music from eitherthe same movement or from a different movement. If the music is chosen from the samemovement, choose a different place in the movement, do not merely continue on withoutbreak. Continue to alternate in this fashion until you are entirely out of the performancespace.
