CHAIRMANS REPORTWhile I am not sure where the past two years have gone, it’s safe to say that I have enjoyed every moment of our Club’s progress both on and off the pitch. I believe that we have made many changes for the better and I would like to open my report by thanking every member and supporter of Sevenoaks Rugby Club for your outstanding commitment. From the players in the Under 6s to our passionate alumni, you make the Club what it is today; a thriving community that offers a warm welcome to guests and friends alike.

What a season it has been. We enter 2015/16 with solid foundations, a healthy balance sheet, outstanding support from players, members and sponsors, major capital investment underway and much to look forward to in a Rugby World Cup year…not to mention the Club’s 90th Anniversary Ball to kick-off the season in style. As a Management Team we aim to embody the views of our members. We may not always get it right, yet we will always make the effort to ensure that you are proud to be part of the Club that you play for and support.

I am very grateful to Management Team colleagues, who have led and embraced change in a way not always associated with the wider management of our great game: Phil Bradshaw, President, John Wilkinson, Treasurer, Andy Nicholls, Secretary, Roger McKerlie, Director of Rugby, Mike Wooldridge, Junior Chairman, and Steve Fitzmaurice, PR and Marketing Manager. Thankfully all have kindly agreed to stand again next year.

Grand opening of the Bradshaw-Pearl balcony

One of the highlights of 2014/15 was when we welcomed our friend and Her Majesty’s Defence Minister (in that order) Michael Fallon to open the Bradshaw-Pearl balcony, a wonderful pitch-side spectator facility named to recognise the vast contribution made to our Club over many years by those two redoubtable gentlemen.

We were joined in a pre-match lunch to mark the occasion by the great and good of Sevenoaks. They included Linda Larter, Chief Executive of our landlords and ‘development partners’ Sevenoaks Town Council (STC), Mr and Mrs Simon Raikes, The Town Mayor and Mayoress, Cllrs Julia Thornton and Peter Fleming from the District Council, and Angela Haymonds from the Cory Environmental Trust who grant-funded our pitch drainage, spectator area and car parking projects, and of course our valued sponsors.

I was very proud to introduce our Club to them all. Nick Wilkinson gave a presentation about his work in local schools as Rugby Development Officer, and there were enthusiastic nods all round. Nick has worked wonders with our state schools programme as he spreads the gospel and values of the game and encourages more children to try rugby – helped by a dedicated group of volunteer coaches.

1st XV pitch comes closer to the Clubhouse

It has been a Club ambition for as long as Peter Williams can remember (that’s a long time) to move the 1st XV pitch to the front of the Clubhouse. We will achieve that dream this season, thanks to the extensive drainage made possible by the Cory grant and also to the co-operation of the Town Council, who agreed to move the cricket squares towards Knole Park to accommodate the extra space the 1st XV pitch required.

We continue to work with STC in our pursuit of building an all-weather 3G pitch on the cabbage patch as a community facility open to all, for both rugby and football. The state of the art surface will be full-sized, RFU and FA approved for amateur senior games, primarily aimed at providing exemplary training and match facilities for our juniors, local schools and clubs.

We have STC agreement in principle to consider match-funding this estimated £750,000 facility with the National Lottery, RFU and Football Foundation. Nothing is certain yet. We still need Planning Consent and are just beginning the consultation process with neighbours, current Knole Paddock users and other stakeholders, the most important of course being Club members – please contact me directly if you would like to express any opinion on these or other developments.

Our headline sponsors and friends at Savills

None of the progress would have been possible without the support of Savills, our Main Sponsor, with whom we are building a strong relationship. It has been a pleasure to see so many representatives of different sides of their business at our Club this season; they are certainly much more than an estate agent, offering valuable advice to club members on Lettings, Development Land and Sales, as well as Property Finance and Planning.

Savills generously give the club £500 for every new instruction from a club member. Savills has also been great supporters of the Mighty Oaks Business Club, which has gone from strength to strength under the leadership first of Roger McKerlie, and latterly Nick Wilkinson. We look forward to making unexpected connections through rugby again next year, hopefully repeating the fantastic Christmas lunch generously sponsored and hosted at Sevenoaks’ answer to The Ivy – The Vine Restaurant, thanks to Bernt and Kathleen Bouverie.

Mighty 2014/15 for Mighty Oaks

As the seniors began their pre season training camp way back in the summer of 2014 the mood for the coming season was one of optimism and expectation. What ensued exceeded our hopes and ambitions as teams from across the club excelled and played a brand of rugby that we all aspire to and want to watch. Results were excellent across the board and we had record numbers of both senior and junior players turning out week after week in the navy and hunting gold of the Mighty Oaks.

The 1st XV was formed from a strong core of players and it is always pleasing to the coaching staff when a side doesn’t have to resort to fielding different sides every week. This sense of understanding and of playing together regularly paid dividends as the 1s achieved their goal of improving their league position on the season before. It was clear early in the season that Maidstone and Medway would be the go-to sides and whilst we pushed them both hard for periods of the four matches we played against them, matching the quality and experience of the opposition was beyond our means.

The battle for 3rd was a tough one and although T Wells and Beckenham were worthy opponents Oaks won through to achieve a very creditable 3rd place. The 1st XV will be looking to build on their huge forward platform and play attacking and adventurous rugby in the season ahead.

Led by Director of Rugby Roger McKerlie and 1st XV Manager Jon Muchmore, the coaching team of Danny Vaughan, Mark Reay and Will Thorpe, supported by the excellent work of Oli Robinson as skipper deserve a huge vote of thanks from the Club.

Everyone apart from the players and management team of the 2nd XV was worried that our callow and, sometimes small, set of players would have an annus horriblis in their league having won promotion the year before. We should have had more faith! The average age of the young squad (with the exception of a couple of wise old heads like Todd King and Adam Sutill) was 22 years old and the team performed admirably throughout the season downing sides like Maidstone, T Wells, Charlton Park and Sidcup whilst running genuine second teams from TJs and Canterbury close.

Despite a couple of heavy defeats when fatigue and injuries were at their height, the team played the most sublime attacking rugby built on a fast and dynamic forward platform to finish a hugely impressive 4th in the League. I cannot overstate the importance to the boys of their management team of Mike Walton and Ian Collins – they were immense.

The 3rd XV weren’t going to be out gunned and, under Mr Woolacott’s unique leadership style, ably supported by Will Rosier, Charlie Watmough and Del McCrone as his lieutenants the boys played with flair, skill and aggression to finish in the top half of their league.

The 4th XV unfortunately had to pull out of their league as they struggled to find a fit team for every game (we had somewhere in the region of 30 4th and vets level players out injured at any particular stage!) but when they got a side out they were too hot for most teams to handle and were lying 4th at the time of their departure from the League. They will be back next season as will the Acorns who are rebuilding towards former glories as they competed well in the new Kent Late Red vets cup.

A big thank you to real club-men Miles Hayward, Dave Sellors, Grovesy and departing manager Mike McMorran for the work they do at the more social end of the seniors. Getting sides out is a tough challenge and it can wear you down so well done fellas, your work is appreciated, especially by the Vets on their epic tour to Romania, every detail of which of course - stays on tour...

One Club

When the Club decided that it needed to create the position of Director of Rugby two years ago, and was lucky enough to find Roger McKerlie available, fresh from his coaching success in a ten year run with his junior group, we committed to the One Club mantra. The same ethos, spirit and heart should be felt throughout our Club, in the best traditions of the game, as we embrace innovation and change in the quest for continuous improvement. We want to encourage seniors and juniors to know and inspire each other, to belong to Sevenoaks Rugby and to enjoy a strong sense of ownership and community across our Club.

Into the West

Nowhere has ‘one club’ been better demonstrated and lived than in the mass mini exodus to Barnstaple for the West Coast Festival, brilliantly led by Patrick O’Keefe and his team.

Results aren’t everything on a tour, but we are a competitive bunch and it was great to see most of our sides return as champions.

We earned an entry into the Guinness Book of Records too – nearly 1,000 Oaks players and supporters decamped to the fields of Devon on the largest junior rugby tour ever. We also raised vital funds for Wooden Spoon and the Marsden Cancer Charity.

The One Club theme was also evident as increasing numbers of supporters travelled across the South East and eventually to Sale to watch and support our brilliant Under 17s side as they pursued the National Cup.

Superbly led on the field by Mick The Munch’s son Max Skinner (a true leader of men) and coached by a team led by Academy Head Coach Adam Bowman and Nick Thompson, the lads fell at the last hurdle losing in the dying seconds of the final to a resilient Nottingham side. The Oaks contingent at Sale Sharks’ stadium was in pieces as Max’s men snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, but we will all remember and salute these boys for their character and gritty skill in the way they play the game. In the last five years we have won the national plate cup, reached two finals and a semi-final of the main competition. The future of Sevenoaks Rugby is in good hands.

Good work Junior Chair

As it is right across the mini and junior section under the passionate leadership of Junior Chairman Mike Wooldridge where we had over 600 players registered. Mike himself is one of four coaches in the country to win the prestigious QBE My Coach National Award, earning the right for a select group of Oaks juniors to receive a full on training session with a premiership coach next year. The Under 16s were Kent champions again, never having lost this trophy, and the skill levels and sheer ‘dog’ of our players do not happen by accident. We all owe a debt of gratitude to the near 100 coaches who give up huge time and pour reservoirs of emotional commitment into our young players.

Some inherit a well-oiled machine but others have to start from scratch and one of our proudest achievements as a Club is to have set up and built a successful Under 13 girls squad, thanks to the efforts of Tonya, Katie and Dave Sellors, and we confidently expect the girls to go from strength to strength.

I would also like to acknowledge the work of Andy Shirtcliff who sets up and manages the Saracens Coaching Camps, in a partnership that also supports the development of our coaches’ skills and knowledge.

An amateur ethos, transparently upheld

Several years ago, Club members voted not to pay players and although this divisive element is creeping into our game we are determined to carry out the wishes of members. Quality coaching and playing facilities remain the key to our success and where we will continue to invest both sponsors’ and members funds.

Page 11: Sevenoaks Rugby Club Handbook 2015/16

We are keen to learn from overseas and to share the experience with our juniors, hopefully forging exchange links with their clubs; consistent with our genuine qualification as a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC), we welcome coaches from both Australia and New Zealand. They are not paid to play, although we do try and assist them with accommodation and employment opportunities through members and associate companies. We are resolved to be transparent in this increasingly murky area, and work within the guidelines of UK Tax Authorities; a blind ambition to climb up the league tables by closet professionalism is not the Sevenoaks way.

Our thanks to the guys behind the scenes – the field stewards who work hard before and after senior games when everyone else is in the bar, the council team led by Nicholas Cave who are our friends and colleagues, Lee Adamson who rides the social media wave for the club, our fixture secretaries, Viz, Nigel and Rob, not forgetting the crucial referee liaison work of Alan Crane.

This season sees the launch of our new website www.sevenoaksrugby.com and we are grateful to Gerry Diebel for building an online image we can be proud of – when the time comes please do support Steve Fitzmaurice in keeping the site updated. It will become an increasingly important forum for reporting on and promoting the Club’s flourishing social scene – a huge thanks to all those involved in creating fantastic events such as the ever raucous Ladies Night, the Quiz Night and the Ball.

As if they haven’t done enough over the years, we thank senior members such as Howard Pearl, Peter and Rob Hunt, Mike Bates who have put everything into our Club, Colin and his bar staff, Pith and Sarah and their Social/Summer Ball committees and Weekend Warriors and of course the one and only Diane Carey, Clubhouse Manager – the glue that holds our One Club together.

It is impossible to do a round-up like this and not forget to mention someone who deserves it. I apologise for that and would just re-iterate that this is a team effort that must be fun for us all; we have a vision for where we want to be, but don’t necessarily have all the answers. Please make contact by email or over a beer at the bar if you have a constructive comment, which is always welcome.

Yours in Rugby Football,

Trevor Nicholson, ChairmanSevenoaks Rugby

1ST XV SEASON 2014/15P20 W15 L5

Manager’s notes…Oaks 1st XV 2014/15 campaign was the most successful of the past decade. A P20 W15 L5 PF 622 PA 354 record was not enough to get the lads from Knole Paddock promoted but a third placed league finish, seventeen points clear of fourth is not to be sniffed at. The undoubted playing highlight being the last play of the game win against Tunbridge Wells in the A21 derby. Nothing sweeter than beating your neighbours.

Coach Vaughan and his management team continued their policy of promoting home grown Academy products into the Senior squad alongside some more seasoned campaigners. Messrs Thomson, Poland and Johansson all enjoyed excellent first seasons in the rough and tumble of senior rugby and soon established themselves as regulars in the match day squad. The Academy production line looks set to continue to roll, with Messrs Richardson, Bowyer and Skinner earmarked for 1st XV duties next term.

With an average age of around 24, the squad enjoyed their time both on and off the pitch, with the South Coast tour a particular highlight. However, Captain Robinsons men take their role as leaders in the club and community seriously and were always willing to help with the younger members of the Mighty Oaks family on a Sunday morning, as well as helping to raise oodles of cash with the ‘Haka for Hattie’ campaign which was brilliantly led by our very own Kiwi and Player of the Season, Kelly Anderson. Aside from the fund raising efforts, the team also appeared on BT Sports Rugby Tonight and won the Mainutrition 10s at Twickenham at a leisurely canter. The prize for which is a training session with the England squad, hopefully a little Sennockian input will, come October 31, help them bring home the World Cup!!

On a sadder note we have to say goodbye to Sam Bright, the leading points scorer for the past two seasons. Sam and his partner Abbie have become part of the furniture at the Paddock are leaving for another rugby adventure and we wish them well in their travels. Sam has done a fantastic job on and off the pitch, they will be sorely missed.

As I write, the 2015/16 season for the 1st XV starts in a little under four weeks time with the first training session on the 7 July. Whilst you are contemplating your second or third Pina Colada in sun drenched holiday resorts from Barbados to Bridlington, spare a thought for the 1st XV who will be undergoing unimaginable agonies at the hands of strength and conditioning coach Connor Browne, a man not known for his tenderness and understanding. Rugby has changed so much on the field since the advent of professionalism, the players are bigger, stronger, fitter and faster. However, I can assure you that the cores values of rugby that we all hold dear are alive and well at the Paddock. With your support next season we can achieve anything. Roll on September, it promises to be another fantastic season.

THE SHEPHERD NEAME KENT SHIELD 2015/16The Kent Shield is a new competition this season, open to Kent and associated clubs competing in RFU Levels 7 and 8 (London 2 and 3 South East divisions) only.

There has been a rising tide of opinion that clubs at these levels cannot compete for the Kent Cup with the semi professional clubs in the County but, on the other hand, are too senior to enter the Kent Vase. Therefore the Shield allows such clubs squeezed in the middle to enjoy a fair and reasonable knockout competition of their own.

The draw for the 1st Round, to be played by Saturday 17 October is:

Bromley v Cranbrook Ashford v Folkestone

The draw for the 2nd Round, to be played by Saturday 2 January is:

Ashford or Folkestone v Tunbridge WellsAylesford v Bromley or CranbrookDartfordians v Sevenoaks (also counts as the league fixture)Park House v Old Colfeians

All matches are to kick off at 14:00 hours, unless played in August or April.

The semi final will be played by 9 April, with the Final at Aylesford RFC on 1 May at 13:30 hours.

All clubs eliminated after their first match are eligible to enter the Kent Plate.

There will be four replacements available for each side. Two front row replacements must be made before the match can revert to uncontested scrums.

If at the end of normal playing time the scores are equal, the team which has scored the greater number of tries will be deemed the winner. If the number of tries is equal, the teams will change ends and continue playing 10 minutes each way. If at the end of this extra period the scores are still equal, and the number of tries are also equal, there will be a replay on the visiting team’s ground or, if mutually agreed between the two teams, the match may be decided by the toss of a coin – the visiting team to call.

EDUCATION chiefs backing Sev-enoaks grammar are launching amajor consultation which will helpdecide whether a new selectiveschool is built in the town.

For the first time, individuals, schools, councils and businessesacross the district will get thechance to put pen to paper when theprocess starts on Monday.

The eight-week consultation is alegal requirement which thes ch o o l ’s backer – Invicta Grammarin Maidstone – must go through as itdraws up proposals to put before theDepartment for Education.

ScaleIt is a major task; Invicta admits

it has consulted before on otherissues but never for anything onthis scale.

Dr Phil Limbert, chief executiveof the trust which runs Invicta, said: “When a school wishes toexpand it has to consult with thelocal community – other schools, parents, local government, the edu-cation authority.

“Usually there is a set audience totarget, but this is much wider thant h at . ”

Responsibility for organising theconsultation falls to Invicta becauseit would be the ‘parent school’ fo r

the new Sevenoaks educationalestablishment. The law forbids thecreation of new grammars but onecan be set-up in the town if it is an‘a n n e xe ’ or ‘s at e l l i t e ’ to an existingselective school like Invicta.

Although the campaign to plant agrammar in Sevenoaks has beendriven by Kent County Council, theauthority is not allowed to mas-termind the consultation itself, butit can take part in it.

Dr Limbert stressed that any pub-lic feedback would not changeI nv i c t a ’s proposals but could swayGovernment thinking when it con-siders the application.

“It gives people the opportunityto express their opinions so that theDepartment for Education can takethese into account,” he said.

The consultation will run untilmid-July, with the responses form-ing an appendix to the raft of papersInvicta will ultimately submit to theGover nment.

The Maidstone-based grammar iscurrently the highest performing

non super-selective school in Kent. Its annual GCSE and A level res-

ults also rank it in the top one percent of UK schools.

Its bosses see the Sevenoaksdevelopment as a major boost notonly for families in the district butalso for its existing pupils.

“An organisation has to develop,”said Dr Limbert.

“If it stands still, if it doesn’t moveon, it will stagnate.

“We believe these proposals are awin-win situation for both the hun-dreds of Sevenoaks parents whosupport selective education and theyoung people in Maidstone who areour students.

Ne g ative“If we genuinely thought this

would have a negative effect on ourschool, we would have had nothingto do with it.”

If given the green light by theGovernment, the Sevenoaks gram-mar would be the first selectiveschool to be built in the country for50 years.! SARACENS JUNIOR TRAINING CAMP 2015 AT SEVENOAKS RFCFollowing on from the success of previous years, Sevenoaks Rugby once again welcomed back The Saracens Rugby Camp to Knole Paddock on 27th and 28th August 2015.

With 170 Players attending, the coaches from Saracens were once again daunted, running a training camp some 3-4 times larger than the other camps they hold at other “grass roots” Rugby clubs in the South East area. The only other Rugby Camp which came close - with 110 attendees - was the Camp held at Allianz Park itself, the home of Saracens Rugby.

Across the two days, attending players enjoyed training like a Saracen, benefiting from the coaching techniques and the specialised “Game Related Activities” (GRA’s) which the Saracens players use themselves.

At the end of each day:• the Saracens coaches awarded one player with Player of the day

On the second day, Friday 30th August:• the Saracens Coaches brought with them the Aviva Premiership Winners Trophy which

Saracens won, beating Bath by 28-16 at Twickenham on 30th May 2015

At the end of the two day Saracens camp:• the Saracens Coaches awarded three boys players with trophies provided by Sanlam -

sponsors of both Saracens and Sevenoaks Rugby.

• Player of the Camp • Best Team Player • Most Improved Player• Every player took home a mystery gift from: • Saracens • Sanlam

Not to be outdone, the Sevenoaks Rugby Girls section held in parallel a training camp of their own for some 30+ girls – run by current England U20’s Player, Scarlett Cooper-Wall.

• At the end of the Girls two day camp Scarlett Cooper-Wall awarded three girls players with trophies also provided by Sanlam - sponsors of both Saracens and Sevenoaks Rugby:• Player of the Camp • Best Team Player • Most Improved Player

• Every player took home a mystery gift from Sanlam

What better way to start the season, than with these excellent Pre-season specialised Training Camps? Thanks to everyone involved.

UNDER 7s 2014/15This year we saw the fruits of last year’s preparation on the basics of Rugby. Running forwards and passing backwards. As the season progresses it is remarkable how individuals suddenly “get it” and develop and enhance the skills beyond anything we saw a few weeks previously, let alone a previous season, and it is this constant individual development that we strive for. The group is big – we have had just under 100 start at least one session, and now have a registered core group of 80, with between 50-65 turning up each week. The 15 coaches who turn up week in week out try and make the sessions and games as much fun as possible – they are after all just 7. During the season we have gone to 20 Festivals and entered 59 different squads in those festivals. Highlights include winning the Farnborough Festival and reaching the Semi Finals of the Saracens Cup The U7s work on a principal of open selection at the moment so everyone gets to play with each other irrespective of ability.

DIANE CAREYDiane has been running her own business ‘A Bit Of A Do’ for many years, providing fabulous food for all occasions in homes, marquees and places of work. She was also one of the nominated caterers at Mountains Country House which is a bespoke wedding venue and frequently provided canapés for events held at Knole House.

She has always provided the food for the clubs annual dinners, supporters lunches etc but 5 years ago took on the Sunday morning kitchen challenge in the hope of turning it into viable business for the club.

In 2013 continuing with her role as Catering Manager she also took on the challenge of becoming Clubhouse Manager where she also now ‘tackles’ all of the cleaning, kit washing and general day-to-day maintenance of the clubhouse and clubhouse enquiries. She can also be contacted for ‘out of shop hours’ rugby kit sales. Another of her roles is to manage all clubhouse bookings, from seminars to birthday parties, celebration lunches, weddings or even children’s parties.

Planning a party? Call Diane on 07988 747049 where she can discuss hire charges and bar and catering options.

Charges for hire are:

Kids parties £80

Booking with catering and bar £100

Booking with catering or bar £150

Booking without catering or bar £250
