Mark S. Cohen, MD
Mark S. Cohen, MD, professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, has been the director of the Section of Hand, Wrist and Elbow at Rush University Medical Center for 24 years, and he currently serves as director of Orthopedic Education in the department. His clinical and research interests focus on fractures and reconstruction of the hand, wrist and elbow, with a special emphasis on minimally invasive surgery. Cohen has special training and expertise in complex elbow conditions including the throwing athlete
(Tommy John surgery) and other sports related injuries.
Kalipada Pahan, MD, professor in the Department of Neurological Sciences and Cohen’s nominator, shares the following personal story about Cohen:
After a car accident, “I had heterotrophic ossification (extra bone formation) in my elbow, hip and ankle. Nobody wanted to do the surgery to remove the extra bone from my left elbow since it was risky. Fortunately, Dr. Cohen took the challenge. Even after the surgery was done, he constantly advised the occupational therapists who were treating me and followed the updates from them until my hand was normal.” Pahan further shares, “Dr. Cohen’s desire to take challenges, commitment to care, interpersonal interactions and professional relationships are of the highest caliber.”
According to the U.S. News & World Report, Cohen is within the top 1 percent of physicians in his specialty in the nation. Chicago magazine has consistently ranked Cohen among its Top Doctors in hand and orthopedic surgery since 1997.
He has authored more than 125 medical articles, 56 book chapters, and he has written a textbook on hand and wrist injuries. In addition, he is an editor of Green’s Operative Hand Surgery, the most widely read and recognized hand and elbow surgery textbook in the world. He has won several research, teaching and achievement awards, and is a member of 16 national and international medical societies and associations.

Rani Ganesan, MD
Rani Ganesan, MD, has been part of the faculty at Rush in the Department of Pediatrics since 2008. When she first arrived at Rush University Medical Center, Ganesan led the implementation and sustained use of a semistructured rounding tool that continues to be used. It has helped standardize patient care discussion and participation of nursing and families during rounds. This work has been presented at national conferences as a model for including families on rounds.
In 2012, she established the Pediatric Supportive and Palliative Care service line, serving “as medical director, leader and inspiriting force,” shares nominator Renee Slade, MD, FAAP, assistant professor, Department of Pediatrics, Rush University. As the director of the service line, Ganesan has worked with a nurse practitioner and a part-time social worker to support more than 200 patients and families with symptom management, end-of-life decision making, and advanced care coordination. The service line is one of three funded in The Coleman Foundation Supportive and Palliative Medicine Collaborative for Pediatric Oncology.
Ganesan also created a palliative care elective for the Pediatric residency program, providing an opportunity for physicians-in-training to develop the skills to deliver difficult news, managing complex conditions and provide counseling for advance directive options.
Valerie Kalinowski, MD, MHA, chief of Clinical Operations and medical director, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Rush University Children’s hospital, shared the following in her letter of support for Ganesan: “After discussing a challenging case with Rani, I consistently and unfailingly have more clarity as to how to direct conversations and provide better family centered care.”
Jean M. Silvestri, MD, associate professor, Department of Pediatrics, also wrote a letter in support of Ganesan: “She created an innovative program, collaborates among all members of the health care team, is accountable to our families and staff, and respects family and provider values.”

Mary E. Johnson, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC, FAAN
Mary E. Johnson, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC, FAAN, professor in the Department of Community, Systems and Mental Health Nursing, has been a faculty member in the College of Nursing (CON) for almost 25 years. She has taught across the curriculum from undergraduate nursing students to PhD students. Her teaching experiences range from face-to-face traditional lecture halls, online formats and individualized one-on-one mentoring of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students. Her teaching focus has been
in psychiatric mental health nursing, qualitative research methods, theory development and application, and the DNP project development courses.
Currently, she is the assistant dean and director of specialty education in the College of Nursing. In this capacity, she has assisted in transforming the Master’s in Nursing Science programs to a Doctor of Nursing Science specialty curriculum. One of the challenges Johnson faced in her role is how to develop curriculum across the many specialty DNP programs for the scholarly project. In order to understand and enhance the curriculum, she teaches the first of the DNP project courses and acts as an adviser and project chair to many DNP students. This allows her to identify areas where the curriculum is effective and identify areas of improvement.
“Dr. Johnson’s teaching accomplishments include developing courses that initiated our Psychiatric Advanced Practice Nursing Program and guiding multiple PhD projects involving qualitative research methods. In this regard, Dr. Johnson developed national prominence for her expertise in Hermeneutic analysis,” says Kathleen R. Delaney, PhD, PMHNP, FAAN, professor in the Department of Community, Systems and Mental Health Nursing, who wrote a letter of support for Johnson.
Johnson also attends monthly student council meetings and works collaboratively with DNP students. She has advised more than 50 prelicensure students and 32 psychiatric-mental health nursing master’s students.

Joan Ann O’Keefe, PhD, PT
Joan Ann O’Keefe, PhD, PT, is an assistant professor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Medicine. She began her teaching career at Rush in the medical gross anatomy and neurobiology courses in Rush Medical College on a part-time basis in 2009. In 2011, she added graduate histology to her teaching and became a core faculty member for Introduction to Neurobiology for the College of Nursing while continuing to teach content for the newly developed integrated curriculum for Rush Medical
College. O’Keefe is director for the Neurobiology course for both the Graduate College and the College of Nursing.
O’Keefe teaches in a variety of capacities: course/block director, lecturer, lab director and small group discussion leader. While teaching the histology component of the M1 curriculum, she noted that students struggled with examinations. She then drafted individual summary slides of each laboratory session, providing important features that students needed to know. Consequently, histology grades rose dramatically. O’Keefe was recently accepted into the Mark Lepper, MD, Society of Teachers at Rush Medical College.
O’Keefe ensures that her teaching extends from the classroom into her research. Her main research emphasis is studying fragile X tremor and ataxia syndrome. She received a K01 grant from the National Institutes of Health.
Presently, she is educating and mentoring three Occupational Therapy students in projects that will last throughout the course of their education. Nicollette Purcell, a student whom O’Keefe taught and mentored, emphasized the following in her letter of support: “Despite my lack of research experience, Dr. O’Keefe was thrilled to take me on and immediately began training me.”
O’Keefe has educated 10 M1 Rush Dean’s Fellowship students, other summer medical students and research associates. She has lectured at UIC’s Physical Therapy Program. Most recently, she has been invited to provide an educational grand rounds presentation to the Department of Rehabilitative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health and to be a symposium speaker for the upcoming International Society for Posture and Gait Research World Congress.

Elizabeth A. Baker, MD, MHPE
Elizabeth A. Baker, MD, MHPE, is an associate professor and vice chair of education in the Department of Internal Medicine and senior associate dean at Rush Medical College. She has been at Rush since completing her residency and chief residency in internal medicine in 1991. She has a master’s in health professions education and is currently working on her PhD in curricular studies/medical education at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Baker began her role at Rush as a core faculty member in the Internal Medicine Residency Program and as the assistant clerkship director in Internal Medicine, eventually serving as the clerkship director for almost 15 years. During that time, she wrote more than 70 letters of recommendation a year for residency applications for students. In 2010, she received the Phoenix Award, which is given to a single faculty member who exhibits the professional and personal qualities the class would like to emulate as physicians.
Baker has led those she mentored to become involved in local and national organizations that end up guiding career trajectories. Elaine Chen, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, first met Baker as a third year medical student and has considered her a mentor for more than 10 years. Chen says, “I always leave Beth’s office feeling energized and more confident in my pursuits with fresh ideas. I have recommended other young faculty to seek mentorship from Beth.”
Currently, Baker still works with nine to 64 residents per year in general internal medicine inpatient education. She is the Education Scholars program head for the Rush Education Mentoring Program and participates in the Women Mentoring Program.
Baker received 17 letters of support from colleagues for her mentoring excellence. Andem Ekpenyong, MD, who has known Baker for more than 20 years since her training days, writes in her letter of support, “The trait that I appreciate the most about Beth is her ability to listen. Although she is not shy about sharing her opinions, she never lets her viewpoint or agenda become the focus.”
Shanu Gupta, MD, assistant professor of Internal Medicine at Rush Medical College, says, “Dr. Baker connected me with the right people, supported my growth and development through sponsoring conferences, promoting collaborations and encouraging innovation and scholarship.” Scott Hasler, MD, summarizes in his letter of support, “as a past winner of the Rush Excellence in Mentoring award myself, I can’t imagine more prestigious company to keep than her.”

Louis Fogg, PhD
Louis Fogg, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Community, Systems and Mental Health Nursing, and has been a faculty member at Rush since 1987. Fogg has provided his statistical expertise on more than 25 National Institutes of Health-funded studies and is a past-president of the Chicago chapter of the American Statistical Association. He has more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has written in the areas of clinical trials and experimental design. He is
knowledgeable in clinical research methodology and multi-level modeling analyses.
“He has had a role in papers that move the field forward,” says nominator JoEllen Wilbur, PhD, APN, FAAN, professor in the Department of Women, Children and Family Nursing.
Susan Weber Buchholz, PhD, RN, FAANP, professor in the Department of Adult Health and Gerontological Nursing, says in her letter of support, “While mentors typically focus on scholars within a few distinct areas, Dr. Fogg’s influence and work goes across many areas within health care. He provides guidance on multiple research topics with faculty and clinicians in the College of Nursing, as well as the other colleges at Rush University, and at the Medical Center. In addition, he collaborates with researchers and clinicians in Chicago, Illinois, the United States and internationally.”
Fogg has an international reputation as a statistician and methodologist. He has been invited to consult and present throughout the U.S. and the world. He facilitates research grant proposals (more than 50 externally funded studies). He plays a critical supportive role in all phases of grant writing and implementation. At any one time he is co-investigator on eight to 10 federally funded grants, totaling more than $10 million.
In addition to teaching in formal statistics classes, Fogg initiated a series of workshops for graduate students and faculty throughout the University to familiarize them with modern statistical methods. He serves as co-investigator on many of their future grants, providing methodological and statistical guidance.
He developed a model of Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) research based on the work of Florence Nightingale. This model lays out a blueprint for conducting DNP research, with the aims of improving practice and disseminating those DNP projects that are generalizable to a large number of health care settings.
Over the last calendar year, Fogg has worked with 70 DNP students at Rush on their DNP projects. He has also worked with a small number of master’s-level students who wanted to get their work published.
Diane McNaughton, PhD, APHN-BC, associate professor in the Department of Community, Systems and Mental Health Nursing, says, “His door is always open to those who seek him out for his expertise. He is a champion of novice and seasoned researchers and students alike.”

Jochen Reiser, MD, PhD, is the chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Rush University Medical Center and the Ralph C. Brown, MD, Professor of Internal Medicine at Rush University. As a world-renowned physician-scientist leader in the field of kidney disease, he has published over 150 papers, many in high-impact journals, including Nature, Science, Cell, and the New England Journal of Medicine.
Reiser’s work has started new research fields and industry developments, and is significantly advancing new treatments for renal diseases. “His publications continue to make major scientific contributions,” says Vineet Gupta, PhD, professor and vice chair for research and innovation in the Department of Internal Medicine.
“He is widely respected at the national and international stage as the leading authority on the role of podocyte injury in glomerular diseases,” Gupta says. “He is credited with the discovery and validation of a novel circulating factor — soluble urokinase receptor (suPAR) as a causative agent behind direct podocyte injury, which drives glomerular diseases.” Several large clinical studies are underway to define the role of suPAR as both biomarker and risk factor for chronic kidney disease and for Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).
Reiser and Gupta have developed a podocyte cell-based HTS assay for the discovery and development of kidney-specific therapeutics. This is used to screen a chemical library and identify novel small molecules that show protection of podocytes from damage by various agents.
In 2005, his group followed up on the discovery that a TRPC6 mutation can cause FSGS; they found additional mutations and defined the interaction of TRPC6 with the slit diaphragm, a discovery that lay ground for mechanosensation at the kidney filter membrane. Further discoveries were made in Reiser’s laboratories, such as TRPC channel members 1 and 5 in podocyte foot processes, and the role of cathepsin L in podocyte as a new drug target in kidney disease.
Reiser directs a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded research laboratory in biomedical investigation of the kidney. He is the principal investigator on two NIH grants and cooperating principal investigator on another three. He is the recipient of a grant from Guangzhou University, which supports the creation of a research center under his direction for the detection and validation of cardio-renal biomarkers.
Reiser is a member of prestigious professional societies including the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Clinical and Climatological Society and the Association of American Physicians. In 2016, he received the Franz Volhard Award of the German Society of Nephrology for his wide contributions to medicine and nephrology. Omar Lateef, DO, chief medical officer at Rush University Medical Center, says, “Dr. Reiser’s knowledge base is incredible. He represents our profession’s best hope for the future.”
