LivingGod’sWordWe pray to God to con nue to pour the Holy Spirit into our hearts so that we can love with God’s own love, when our own ability to love fails us. We pray that we can grow into that full maturity that we see in Jesus, who prayed for his enemies from the cross.

Saint Rita: Famous as the patron of hopeless situations, St. Rita of Cascia, a beautiful woman who lived in Italy in the fourteenth century, is immortalized in this wonderful, deeply moving film. Starring Vittoria Belvedere and Martin Crewes, her story combines high drama, great love, deep betrayal, profound forgiveness, and strong faith. This story is about the brave woman who married her knight, helped him overcome his dark past and convert to faith, happily bore him two children, and later endures immense pain as she loses everything in her life. She finds peace and new hope through the generosity of a nearby convent of sisters, and with their help she develops a deep union with Christ that greatly inspires all near her. *****This movie is not rated, but was created with an adult audience in mind. We would recommend Parental Guidance and that parents preview it before watching with children.***** To access “Saint Rita” Log in to Formed.org. Type “Saint Rita” into the search bar and hit enter.

Proper Etiquette for Mass - continued

As men oned last week, the General Instruc on of the Roman Missal (GIRM) specify mes of silence before and during the Mass. Our culture is filled with noise and other forms of sensory s mula on. Our spirits can be so exhausted and we’re not even conscious of this fact because it is so common. We even feel uncomfortable with silence even through our spirits long for it. The scriptures in mul ple verses tell us that God especially speaks to us in the silence. The GIRM instructs us to have a me of silence before Mass begins. It is a me for us to prayerfully prepare for Mass – it is not a me for cha ng with our neighbors in the pews. As the scripture says “there is a me for every purpose under heaven”. Before Mass is not the me for socializing – there are other mes and events for that purpose. By praying and perhaps by reading the Mass readings before Mass we are be er disposed to hear the Lord speak to us, - i.e., the Mass becomes more spiritually frui ul for us.

Religious Educa on

This Wednesday, February 26, there will be no Religious Educa on classes in the evening so that all families can a end an Ash Wednesday service together. (See the schedule elsewhere in the bulle n.) Wednesday classes resume Wednesday, March 4.

The Rite of Elec on is a wonderful celebra on of “elec on” for those preparing for the Sacraments of Ini a on from the en re west side of the diocese. Lenten Fast and Abstinence Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 26, 2020. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. If possible the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.

GETTING MORE OUT OF LENT! LENTEN FAITH GROUPS AT THE CATHEDRAL

For many of us, Lent can be a challenging me. We endure the pain of fas ng, the struggle to give up comforts, and the hope to get through without too many slipups. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The Ge ng More out of Lent Small Group 5-week Study in English or Living the Eucharist 5 week Study in Spanish, will guide you to experience the wonderful gi s of the season of Lent, and help us come to know Jesus in a more personal way. Individual group studies will be held: Mondays, 6:00 p.m. – School Building, beginning February 24, 2020 (English) Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. – Parish Center, beginning February 25, 2020 (English) Wednesdays, 7:00 p.m. – Private Home (English) Thursdays, 10:00 a.m. – Parish Center, beginning February 27, 2020 (English) Thursdays, 5:00 p.m. – Parish Center, beginning February 27, 2020 (Spanish) Fridays, 10:00 a.m. – Parish Center, beginning February 28, 2020 (English) For more informa on and to sign up for an individual group study, please call Martha Beasley at the Parish Office, 575/524-8563. A sign-up sheet for all sessions will also be available a er all the Masses in the Cathedral Foyer on February 22 and 23, 2020.
