Thank you for your generosity.

All those who came out to our Family Mass

and Picnic seemed to have a wonderful time.

A big thank you is due to all those who

worked hard to make this a wonderful cele-

bration from the music for the Mass and all

the wonderful food that was prepared.

There were activities planned, but it was so

hot outside. The piñatas did go over very

well, but we were under the shade of the oak

tree.

Pope Francis has declared this month to be

the Extraordinary Mission Month. He is

marking the 100th anniversary of Pope Bene-

dict XV’s apostolic letter Maximus Illud. This

letter called the Church to renew its commit-

ment to the missionary activity. The renewal

was needed after the great destruction

caused by World War I. Yes, there were tre-

mendous needs to rebuild the Church in Eu-

rope, but he knew that this renewal would

only be truly brought to fulfillment by re-

sponding wholeheartedly to missionary spirit

that is the center of our faith. Only in sharing

the Good News to the ends of the earth do

we fulfill Jesus’ great vision of his Church.

When we fail to be truly missionary, we end

up being closed up and stale. St. John XXIII

saw this very stagnation when he called for

Vatican II. Open up the windows and let the

Spirit blow freely, renewing us interiorly and

leading us out afresh to the world.

Love, Fr. Jimmy

REFLECTIONS FOR THIS WEEK’S READINGS

“How long, O Lord?” Habakkuk cries in the first

reading (Habakkuk 1:2). He accuses God: “You do

not listen!” (1:2). There are times in all our lives

when we feel abandoned by God, when we suffer

trauma, violence, ruin, or misery. It is natural to

question how a loving, caring, all-powerful God can

allow this. Do we turn to faith or despair? In the

end, Habakkuk turns to faith. The forces of Nebu-

chadnezzar are closing in on Jerusalem, but the

Lord assures Habakkuk that the just Israelite will

live. Keeping faith is a challenge when times are

difficult. But this is when it is necessary . . . and

consoling.• A gardener plants seeds in the spring,

nurtures the tender shoots by watering and weed-

ing and fertilizing, tends them throughout the sum-

mer, allowing them to flower, then harvests their

fruit in the fall. Within each one of us are seeds that

were planted before we were born: seeds of kind-

ness and courage, generosity and patience, faith,

hope, and love. But we were born with seeds of

vices as well as virtues. Which seeds do we nur-

ture? Which seeds do we care for? Are we nurtur-

ing the tender shoots or the invasive weeds? As

babies, the seeds we contained were incapable of

any action at all. As we mature, the seeds we nur-

tured are capable of moving mountains.• How do

we nurture the seeds within us? Nurturing requires

attention and action. We nurture the seeds of virtue

by exercising those virtues. We exercise kindness

and generosity through acts of care and charity.

We exercise courage when we stand up for what

we believe in when it’s easier not to. We exercise

faith by placing our trust in God.

Question of the Week: Which seeds have I nur-

tured? Which seeds will I make the effort to nurture

now?

New Orleans Office of Marriage & Family Life are pleased to announce that they will be hosting a work-shop to help parishes provide support and healing for those who have experienced reproductive loss (miscarriage, abortion). The workshop will be presented by the Life Perspectives. They have been providing workshops to leaders and professionals for over a decade in this area. Studies show that 10-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Many of us who have been involved in family ministry know that there are many in our par-ishes who have experienced this pain. The Archdiocese of New Orleans is providing this workshop for you at no cost and anyone is welcome to attend. If you are inter-ested in attending this event, please RSVP at www,.nolacatholic.org/miscarriage, or 504-861-6243.

We would like to start up a new ministry called “The Garden Club” Will you help us to get this ministry going? We need your help. If you are interested and God has blessed you with the gift of a green thumb, or even if you don’t think you have a green thumb, call the Parish Office to put your name and number down so that we can call you to come out for a meeting to discuss what we need to do to get our Church yard to look as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside. Thank you for offering your tal-ents to the service of God. Please volunteer

World Mission Sunday, October 20th. This year, Pope Francis addresses his World Mission Sunday mes-sage to us as we live out our baptismal call to be sent forth to evangelize the world. This is the mission that all Christians have received, and God gives us the grace to live it out wherever we may be. As we pray and re-spond on World Mission Sunday here at home, we share in those celebrations taking place in every parish, seminary, school and convent all over the world. To-gether with the Church of Christ on mission in the world, we are baptized and sent, providing the prayerful and financial support necessary to bring the Lord’s mer-cy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communi-ties in the Pope’s missions. “May the love for the Church’s mission, which is a passion for Jesus & his people grow ever stronger!” 2nd Collection 10/20/19

The Ladies Altar Society will have their anual meeting on Monday, Oct. 7th at 6:45 pm in the St. Vincent Center. MOUNT CARMEL ACADEMY’S OPEN HOUSE will be held on Thursday, October 10th from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for all prospective students and their parents.
