Severed Limbs - "Parts Characters in Poser"

NOTE: This was written for Poser 4, but is still applicable today.

RDNA Tutorials

Severed Limbs - "Parts Characters in Poser" Want just the wings off that Dragon, or do you want to give Posette or Vickie an extra set of arms?Well here is a simple technique to do just that. Start making your own Frankenstein creations today!

This works for poser 3, 4, Pro Pack, or P5, so no matter the version you can use this technique.

Tools Needed: UVMapper A Plain old text editor (I use Word Pad) Poser

PART 1: Making the Object File

-Open up UVMapper and import the base geometry file for the Poser 4 Woman. This can be found in:

Poser 4/Runtime/Geometries/P4NudeWoman/

-Once the .obj has loaded Hit Ctrl-G and the list of groups will pop up. Select all of the parts that are not the arms, hands or fingers. Hit ok, and then when you are back out in the main window, hit the Delete key. You will get a warning box asking if you want to do this, hit yes. You should be looking at only the hands arms and fingers now.(I kept the Collars on as a base for my arms)

-Save this new file in the same dir as the P4 Woman's and name it arms.obj or something of the like.

PART 2: Editing the .CR2

If you have never done this before, it can make some people a little nervous. A .cr2 (and most of the poser files) are actuallytext files that tell poser what it needs to know.

-Open your text editor and load the P4 fem's .cr2 from the following dir.

Poser 4/Runtime/libraries/characters/people -Immediately save this as JustArms.cr2 so you don't accidently overwrite your P4 Fem's .cr2.

-Now once saved with the new name, look for a line that looks like this:

figureResFile :Runtime:Geometries:P4NudeWoman:P4NudeWom.obj

It will be there at the top under some {'s , }'s , and Version info. This is the line that tells poser what .obj file it is working from.To point this at your new arms, chage it to:

figureResFile :Runtime:Geometries:P4NudeWoman:arms.obj

-Save it again as JustArms.cr2 and exit the text editor.

PART 3: Using the .cr2 in Poser

-Open poser, get rid of the default character, and go looking for the new arms character (Should be in the People Section) Load the new character. It will take a minute or two as it builds a .rsr file for the arms. Once it is done you should be looking at a set of arms only in the window.

-You are done!

NOTES: These arms take the normal texture files and have the same materials set up as the P4 fem, so you can change them like you normally do. Also because the part names remain the same, Poses work just fine on them too.

ADDED NOTES: This same technique can be used to lop off parts of animal models, so if you wanted to have Wings off a bird model, you can do that or a tail off the cat, etc.

Wonderful tut and very useful. I found it very easy to follow, but I can't seem to get the selected parts to delete Is this a feature of UVMapper Pro or can this be done in the free Classic version? But I did learn something new, I never knew you could save just part of an object, lol.
