Calming the Chaos!
Lisa Alley has been quilting for over 20
years and she describes herself as a border line
hoarder when it comes to fabric and quilting
paraphernalia. Since she made the bold step to
organize her sewing space and take pictures
while doing it, she has the unique opportunity to
enlighten us on how we might calm our chaos
too! Reducing, reusing and organizing can only
improve our creativity.
So please join us for an enjoyable evening,
bring your questions and concerns as well as the
opportunity to learn some new organizational
techniques.
Also check out Lisa’s website,
http://www.bearhugquiltworks.com to see her
quilt patterns and her sweet dog!
A reminder about our next workshop, May
24th, 9:00-11:00: Modern Applique with Kath-
leen Baden. (https://kbquilts.com). Deb will have
the sign up sheet and supply list as well as the
sample quilts and the book Modern Baby:
Easy, Fresh, and Fun Quilt Designs at the
April meeting.

A Note from the President...
This month I’ve been doing a lot of research. With as many quilts as I have
planned for the family this year, research is a necessary thing! I thought I’d
share some of my go-to places to get inspiration for quilts and designs.
For general quilting inspiration, my first place to go is Pinterest. I wasn’t
sold on the concept when it first came out, but have since come to enjoy the site.
I’m not an everyday user, I tend to go onto Pinterest when I need to find some-
thing specific. And it’s great for that.
Another site I use when I need inspiration, suggestions, or ideas specific to
machine quilting is Machine Quilters Resource (MQR Forums). This site is one
of the most helpful sites I’ve ever found on the internet for both reference and
general camaraderie. I’ve been a member for almost 10 years now (July 2007!).
If I’m looking to take an at home class, or have some reference with videos,
I’ll head over to Craftsy. They usually run sales on their classes several time a
year and have more categories than quilting to choose from.
If I need a specific block, I’ll head over to Quilters Cache. Just watch her
copyright restrictions, she’s more than generous with her site, so don’t abuse it.
And finally, I will occasionally go to
YouTube if there’s a specific technique
that I just can’t wrap my head around.
I’m sure you’re all familiar with these re-
sources, but thought I’d share them this
month. Now if only I had a great garden-
ing resource that would solve all my gar-
den problems this spring!
Happy Sewing!

Minutes from March’s Meeting
The March 28, 2017 meeting was called to order by President, Judy
Whitehead.
There were 35 members attending the meeting.
Deb Waldron introduced the March program – Square in Square by Gloria
Stickney of Sew Fabulous Quilts, Inc., in Winston-Salem. Gloria teaches Jodi
Barrow’s Square in Square technique. Gloria also does customized long-arm
quilting and custom memory tee shirt quilts. She is a member of the Heart of
the Triangle Quilt Guild and brought her guild’s raffle quilt.
During the program, Gloria presented numerous examples of how the
Square in Square techniques is used to make quilts (there are 39 options). She
explained the technique very thoroughly and presented many quilts using the
different options.
Gloria’s website is www.sewfabulousquilts.com.
Gloria will be teaching a workshop on Saturday, April 1, where partici-
pants will make a Prairie Claw block using the Square in Square technique.
The class requires the purchase of a book and ruler. Fabric needed for the block
will be supplied by Gloria.
Dolores Forbare reported the treasury has a balance of $9,697.02. The col-
lection for the Mooresville Soup Kitchen was $52.73.
Colleen Thrailkill, charity quilt chair, has returned from Florida. She re-
minded members that she has donated fabric for backings and batting. She al-
so offered to quilt items donated by members.
Colleen is responsible for the quilt stories for the guild Quilt Show and en-
couraged members to submit their quilt stories on the Quilt Show application.
Judy Whitehead reminded members to send information for the newslet-
ter to Snow Wildsmith.
Barbara Barrier reminded members of the Scholarship Fund and to speak
with her privately if someone is interested in using the funds.
Rene Crowder reminded members this is the final month for this quarter
for the UFO Challenge. There is only one more quarter (till the end of June) for
the program.

Minutes from March’s Meeting, Continued
Barbara Barrier reminded members of the Blue, Yellow and Green chal-
lenge for the guild Quilt Show.
Laurie Jasany said the library cart has a number of dated books. Prior to
the guild Quilt Show, she will review the library cart books and place the out
dated books for sale at the show.
Julie Murphy spoke about the Quilt Show. She gave everyone a Program
Guide Advertising sheet so that members can seek advertising commitments
from local businesses. Also, she will email the Program Guide Advertising docu-
ment to members. She noted that our quilt show draws about 500 visitors.
Julie also mentioned that at the April meeting, the volunteer sign-up
sheets will be available.
Mary Jo Belk will bring more raffle quilt tickets to the April meeting.
Judy Whitehead said there are two members, Barbara Barrier and Deb
Waldron, with dual roles, including Member at Large. Judy asked for two mem-
bers to volunteer for the Member at Large roles. Joyce Mullis and Mary Jo Belk
volunteered to take those roles.
Deb Waldron reminded members that the April program, Calming the
Chaos, will be presented by Lisa Alley from Winston-Salem. Lisa is a quilt mak-
er, quilt judge, pattern maker and lecturer. The program will focus on organiz-
ing our sewing space.
The May program will be Modern Applique by Kathleen Baden. Kathleen
has taught quilting for 20 years and will present a trunk show. Kathleen will
also present a workshop on Wednesday, Mary 24 on modern applique. Kath-
leen’s website is https://kbquilts.com.

Pineapple Fabrics. Pineapple Fabrics will be coming to enlighten us
on their path from mainly industrial textiles into retail with a huge fo-
cus on quilting and home décor. I’m sure there will be lots of samples,
choice fabric lines and ideas galore presented.
Well that gets us through the first half of the year. Don’t hesitate
to email me with questions or concerns. Also anyone else that wishes
to volunteer to help with presenters and/or workshops, please email
me to let me know. Thanks!
Happy Quilting! Deb

Learn More about Quilt Judging
From Judy: A few weeks ago, I took an Introduction to Quilt
Judging class, and boy did I learn a lot. With the instructor’s
permission, over the next several months, I’ll be sharing with
you some of what was shared with me regarding what criteria
judges use in evaluating quilts.
The Quilt Back
The back of the quilt is evaluated, but not with the same weight as the
front. Too often, there is simply not time in a judging day to fully evaluate
the back of the quilt.
Do check for appropriate fabric choices, lack of thread tails and knots, con-
sistency of stitching, finishing techniques, etc.
Backing fabric should not shadow thru to the front of the quilt.
Backing should not have puckers or tucks.
GUILD LIBRARY
Enjoy our Guild library! Please follow our 5 simple rules:
1. Please sign out any books you borrow.
2. Limit 2 books a month.
3. Return books by next month. (Make a copy of the pattern you
are using if needed) That gives another member the chance to love
the book too!
4. Scratch your name from the sign out list.
5. Request books of your choice!

CHARITY QUILT NEWS
I've just delivered ten of our charity quilts to the Labor and Delivery
department at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. The nurses there
were so impressed with our members' handiwork and every blanket we
gave was uniquely different. Debbie Davidson told me that our quilts go
to babies in the neonatal intensive care unit and have also gone to griev-
ing parents.
Many thanks to those of you who are participating in our charity
quilt project. Remember, we have batting and backings purchased by the
guild. Just let me know the size you need or you can bring the top to a
meeting and I'll quilt it.
