The poster is a visual medium. It is something that the viewer should be able to take in with a single glance.
The two components to consider for posters are the use of visuals and the use of text.
-
"Illustrations should serve one or more of these needs: Evidence,
Efficiency, Emphasis"
B. Heifferen
Writing in the Health Professions 1st Edition
-
Evidence means using illustration to support a health claim or argument, e.g. using graphs showing the distribution of flu epidemics to illustrate outcomes of access to vaccines.
-
Efficiency means using an illustration because it is a clearer representation than words
-
Emphasis refers to the use of graphics for their value in helping the viewer to remember something, especially when the graphic has emotional or shock value, e.g. using pictures of accident victims to emphasize the importance of safe driving.
-
Think about how long it will take viewers to absorb the message and whether they will spend the time given the context.
