viii. Gonyo: I would be working with the current initiatives. Personally I would like to have a dining town hall, so that people can ask them questions and make students more comfortable about the work that we are doing.

ix. Mohammed moves to end questioning. x. Chair: The floor is now open for discussion and debate. xi. Iman: It seems like senator Gonyo has the necessary experience and I think that she

has a lot of passion. xii. Pitarys: I have gotten to know Senator Lively through College Republicans and I

think that she will do a great job with anything that she puts her mind to. xiii. Green: This is one of those positions that you need experience because Senator

Gonyo already has those connections. She has gone to almost every meeting with the former chair and knows the new secretary and undersecretaries and she can continue to bridge those gaps

xiv. Web: Senator Gonyo xv. Diamond moves to vote – seconded xvi. Stubblefield moves to have a vote of confidence in Senator Gonyo xvii. Chair: Senator Gonyo will be the new Chair of

c. Diversity and Multicultural Affairs Committeei. Senator Stubblefield nominates Senator Wires ii. Senator Green nominates Senator Cedeño Salgado iii. Senator Pitarys nominates Senator Pitarys iv. ***Senator Wires reads speech*** v. ***Senator Cedeño Salgado reads speech*** vi. ***Senator Pitarys reads speech*** vii. Chair: At that this time, we will open for questions. viii. Gonyo: How would you handle a tough situation, such as resolution 13? ix. Wires: I feel as though that is a huge issue and it is important to listen to both sides.

However there are always two sides and we need to be able to come to some sort of agreement.

x. Cedeño Salgado: There were a lot of conversations going on last year, but it’s hard to listen when people just come in yelling at one another. We can utilize ODIME as well in order to facilitate safe spaces.

xi. Pitarys: In regards to resolution 13, I am against policies that may attack another. I thought that resolution 13 was dividing us further. I think that facilitating conversations and planning events will have a much better outcome.

xii. Green: Can you give the senate a yearly plan of what you would do as chair? xiii. Wires: Unfortunately, I am graduating in December. In September I would like to

assign roles to people. For example, you talk to Mason Life; you talk to ODIME, etc. Then by October, take those initiatives and go with them. I would make sure to

xiv. Cedeño Salgado: We have a large spreadsheet and at the beginning of the year each person would be in charge of talking to different organizations. I would also like to have the committee go to a diversity related event once a month.

xv. Pitarys: I would like to hit the ground running. It is critical to open the lines of communication and I would encourage committee members to attend various organizations meetings and events. I would like to create a list serve of all of the

different diversity organizations. I would love to have the Secular Student Alliance go to events with the Black Student Alliance.

xvi. Clerk motions to limit each person’s statements to 2 minutesxvii. Diamond I move to end questioning. xviii. Web: As Vice Chair of Diversity, it is a monster. You need some one with

experience. Senator Pitarys said that he was walking down the hall and wanted to run which shows that he does not have the same passion. I believe in Senator Cedeño Salgado and I know that she can command the room.

xix. Green: I think all three candidates bring completely different ideas. I think that Cedeño Salgado and Wires are both great, but I will be voting for Cedeño Salgado simply because she will be here for a full year.

xx. Gonyo: Keep in mind that you are not voting for ideas, you are voting for leadership. Cedeño Salgado has amazing leadership abilities and I have an amazing level of respect for her. She will be frank and upfront with people without them getting offended.

xxi. Diamond: I will not be supporting Senator Wires because of her lack of professionalism on Facebook.

xxii. Genoese-Zerbi: I will be voting for senator Wires because I think that she will be able to conduct herself with professionalism while still getting her point across.

xxiii. Mohamed moves to vote xxiv. Acevedo: I have worked with Senator Cedeño Salgado before and she is very

direct, but respectful. I support her completely because she has a passion for what she believes in and has a great passion for serving the student body.

**Stubblefield moves a vote of confidence on senator Cedeño Salgado**** Cedeño Salgado is elected the new chair**

d. University Life Committeei. Senator Stubblefield nominates Senator Genoese-Zerbi ii. Senator Gonyo nominates Senator Web iii. ***Senator Genoese-Zerbi reads speech*** iv. ***Senator Web reads speech*** v. Chair: Are there any questions? vi. Gonyo: What events have you planned so far? vii. Genoese-Zerbi: I have not planned any events so far, but I am ready to learn. If

elected to the position, I will start planning for viii. Web: When I was in high school, I chaired a 5 k walk with our rival high school. I

also helped run the event Hoodies and Hijabs. I was also able to MC the event. ix. Fisch: How would you keep spirit up for the entire year? x. Genoese-Zerbi: I think that tailgates are a great way to increase the level of school

spirit. I would like to give out t-shirts before the game rather than just at the game. xi. Web: PAC put on an event called the Homecoming Hustle, so we could expand

upon that. xii. Green: The University Life committee has the stigma of the “fun committee” so I

was wondering if you have any policy ideas.

Page 14: sg.gmu.edusg.gmu.edu/.../April-28th-Minutes-for-37th-Senate.docx  · Web view... The best way to go about that would be to work with the PR team to get the word ... in College Republicans

xiii. Genoese-Zerbi: I don’t think that anything is wrong with begin the fun committee, but I am looking on how to make the Registering to become a student organization easier.

xiv. Web: In terms of how the committee is run, it wont be as strict as this senate, but we will follow parliamentary procedures. In terms of policies, I coauthored a few resolutions with former chairman Pittman, so I do have some experience with that.

xv. Cedeño Salgado: What would be the logistics of the tailgating idea? xvi. Genoese-Zerbi: the homecoming tailgate costs about $40,000 and it would cost

about $10,000 to just block off the area. I would like to reach out to Mason Athletics or PAC to see if they would be willing to allocate funds.

xvii. Web: I do have to agree, we only get a certain amount of money. I have a lot of connections with the university administration like Vice President of University Life, Rose Pascarell.

xviii. Diamond: What would you do to help Patriots in Action? xix. Genoese-Zerbi: I have participated in PIA events as well as sitting in on their

meetings. I would like to try and increase exposure in people coming to the events. xx. Web: I would like to have better time management in terms of Patriots in Action.

We need to have more PIA publicity and its our job to inform students about the sexual assaults on campus. I would like to work with the PR team as well as the Washington Post.

xxi. Edwards: Do you think that students would enjoy having external venders come on to campus?

xxii. Genoese-Zerbi: Yes, I do think that. I do think that is more of a question for a What Do You Want Wednesday.

xxiii. Web: In terms of like a tailgate that would be a great idea. xxiv. Mohamed motions to end questions. xxv. Fisch: Senator Genoese-Zerbi is my roommate and I really do admire him. He has

proven himself to be a very strong leader, especially in the Campus Catholic Ministries. He is the most likely person to ask a question because he wants to know everything. He’s dedicated and motivated. He will always work hard no matter what.

xxvi. Gonyo: I would like to point out that Senator Genoese-Zerbi has only been in the organization for a few weeks and has not authored any legislation. Senator Web is one of the most dedicated senators in the organization.

xxvii. Stubblefield: I do have one reservation in particular, Senator Web voted against a resolution to support tailgates.

xxviii. Green: I just want to applaud Senator Genoese-Zerbi for coming up here; however, this position really needs someone who has the experience.

xxix. Diamond: Senator Web has worked with the university life committee before writing legislation, so I will be voting for him.

xxx. Cedeño Salgado moves to vote. ** Cedeño Salgado motions a vote of confidence on Senator Web**
