Why Senior business?In Korea
8
The left chart shows that the increase of the number of small business in Korea. This tendency is not showed in special class. Both female and male are interested in establishment their own business beyond the age, too. Therefore the government is trying to help citizens who want to make their own business. In addition, the number of the old rise continually. However, there are no jobs for many seniors and they are hard to gather retirement savings because their retirement is become more earlier. In this situation, we think senior business – the small business which is founded by senior – can be the solution for the problem.Reference 1 : http://www.fnnews.com/view?

Senior businessEven though our subject is senior business, we also visited 3 senior foundations and 1 senior helping center. Senior foundation means that the company that aid the old people who want to start their own business. Through visiting the senior foundations, we learned how government and society help the senior founder. Then, we visit the store which is run by senior founder. Therefore we can know weather the senior foundation’s effort work or not and actual story that occur in real senior business market. In addition, we also visit senior helping center. Senior helping center is different from senior foundation. Both organizations goal is helping the old, but senior foundation is organization that helping senior self-reliance through starting their business. However, Senior helping center is help the elderly in every life. Therefore, we visit both organizations and compare them.

Why we choose USA?
11
As advanced country, the United States entered the aging society 10 years earlier than Korea. It means that they experience the problem of the aging society like absence of jobs for seniors and their economic problem. Therefore the United States try to solve these problem, so senior welfare and industry in United States are more systematic than Korea’s. Senior business is one of the solution of solving the troubles caused by an aging society, so the rate of senior business is high. For example, to 1996 from 2009, the rate of starting business by senior is more than by young people. Unlike Korean seniors, the United States seniors think starting as a key of the second life. In addition, there are over 900 SBDCs(Small Business Develop Center) and many organizations that help the senior business in United states. For instance, AARP, civic ventures, SCORE and so on. Therefore we choose the United States.

Q. Are there any programs that help or promote senior entrepreneurs?
A. Of course, there are several ways to support not only senior entrepreneurs also young bloomers. In SBA, there is an organization named Office of Entrepreneurial Development(OED). OED oversees a network of programs and services that support the training and counseling needs of small business. OED’s network include Small Business Development Centers(SBDC) and Entrepreneurship Education(EE). Q. How many businesses open and close each year?
A. In 2009, there were 27.5 million businesses in the U.S. An estimated 552,600 new employer firms opened for business in 2009, and 660,900 firms closed. The number of new small businesses are opened every year, however the number of existed small businesses are closed in that degree every year. Running own business is not easy, very difficult.
Q. Among senior entrepreneurs, what is the most popular small business among senior entrepreneurs?
A. Actually, there are no specific popular businesses. If you have knowledge of specific field, you can do the business which is related to your knowledge. So, nowadays, there are many seniors who make IT industry for one’s business. Nevertheless, if I have to pick 3-4 businesses, maybe I can say pet shop, clothing retailer, book shop, restaurant are the popular businesses.
Q. What is the most frequent difficulty which late bloomers faced?
A. Definitely finance problem. So, that is why SBA has Office of Capital Access. Small businesses rely heavily upon owner investment and bank credit, averaging about $80,000 a year for young firms. Many entrepreneurs need money to start or expand a small business and must combine what they have with other sources of financing. These sources can usually include family and friends, venture capital financing and business loans. So, SBA operates the primary business loan programs and the equity financing programs such as 7 Loan Program, Certified Development Company, Microloan Program, and Small Business Investment Company Program.

In here, they supported the every senior not only the senior founder.
They provide a lot of program to make older people more actively. Such as outreach advocacy program or counseling program. We thought counseling program is the most helpful program. Because it is basically classify their ability and promote their capacity.
As a result, ‘SENIOR FOUNDATION’ is much related with ‘SENIOR WELFARE’
