One who completes his Torah portions with the congregation is rewarded that his days and years are extended (Berachot 8b).As the phrase days and years are extendedappears to be redundant, commentaries grapple with the intended meaning of the blessing. Ben Yehoyada writes length of daysrefers to the quality of life, and length of yearsto the quantity of days. Alternatively, length of yearsmay refer to the young individual who will be blessed with advanced age, while length of daysmay refer to the older individual who will be blessed with extended life. Accordingly, in addi- tion to advancing ones education by preparing the Torah parsha before the public reading on Shabbat, one also is blessed with prolonged life. Prior to World War II, the town of Kelm in Lithuania housed the famous mussar yeshiva, the Kelm Talmud Torah. This pre-holocaust yeshiva adhered to a rigorous ethical and prin- cipled discipline according to the values of the Torah as practiced by the mussar move- ment. In the Kelm Yeshiva people routinely remarked that one who prepares the Torah parsha in advance of the Shabbat public reading demonstrates steadfast faith in the words and promises of our sages. Conversely, casualness in this area, people would say, is perhaps due to a lack of faith in our sages, as who would not want to be blessed with a long life? May we all be blessed with a long life filled with personal quality of life.

PARSHAT SHEMOS (Pg. 292)

TORAH INSIGHTS FROM RABBI ELI BABICH

ימה ים מצר ל הבא י ישרא ה שמות בנ ל וא “These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt...” (Shemot 1:1)

Numerous commentaries remark that the Hebrew letters of the opening words,

ה שמות ל וא “these are the names”, serve as an acronym for the statement, וחייב אדם לקרוא הפרשה שניים מקרא ואחד תרגו “A person is obligated to study the Torah portion twice with one translation.” The principle, “shnayim mikra ve-echad targum,” is a Talmudic obligation for the practice in which the weekly Torah parsha is studied twice along with a translation during the week prior to the public Torah reading on Shabbat morning. The Aramaic translation by Onkelos is the preferred interpretation to be used, however, many authorities include Rashi’s com-mentary as an acceptable option. Rabbeinu Yohonasan MiLunel explains that the weekly reading of the parsha promotes fluency in Hebrew, and the inclusion of a commentary facilitates comprehension of the Torah. The Shulchan Orach (285) codifies the practice and rules, “Even though each person hears the Torah reading each week in the public reading, we are obligated to read each parsha [ahead of time] twice in the Hebrew and once in the Aramaic translation.” The Talmud declares that the individual who consistently adheres to this practice merits the blessing of a long life. “One who completes his Torah portions with the congregation is rewarded that his days and years are extended (Berachot 8b).” As the phrase “days and years are extended” appears to be redundant, commentaries grapple with the intended meaning of the blessing. Ben Yehoyada writes “length of days” refers to the quality of life, and “length of years” to the quantity of days. Alternatively, “length of years” may refer to the young individual who will be blessed with advanced age, while “length of days” may refer to the older individual who will be blessed with extended life. Accordingly, in addi-tion to advancing one’s education by preparing the Torah parsha before the public reading on Shabbat, one also is blessed with prolonged life. Prior to World War II, the town of Kelm in Lithuania housed the famous mussar yeshiva, the Kelm Talmud Torah. This pre-holocaust yeshiva adhered to a rigorous ethical and prin-cipled discipline according to the values of the Torah as practiced by the mussar move-ment. In the Kelm Yeshiva people routinely remarked that one who prepares the Torah parsha in advance of the Shabbat public reading demonstrates steadfast faith in the words and promises of our sages. One of America’s premier Jewish scholars in Torah and Jewish mys-
