TORAH MATTERS:

PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Chaim Strauchler IMAGINE THE STORIES IMAGINE THE STORIES IMAGINE THE STORIES IMAGINE THE STORIES

Imagine the stories that will be told about this Rosh Hashana. How many years from now will people still speak about the events of 2020? What stories will our children tell their children about what their parents and community did during this season?

Our parsha speaks about the power of one generation to pass on its story (and its covenant) to future generations. The Torah describes how everyone who left Egypt with Moshe was bound together in an agreement with God, even the woodchoppers and the water-carriers. Yet, the Torah says that those who were not present at that time were also joined into the covenant. Rashi explains that this refers to future generations.

The Malbim questions how unborn children can be obligated by the decisions of their ancestors. He o+ers various mystical and technical answers.

Yet, there is more to a covenant than obligation. We are part of a chain - biological and spiritual. We embody the sacrifices and values transmitted by generations that came before us. Our decisions will have ramifications long into the future. That future is with us now, just as we were present then.

This should give us pause and strength. We stand before God on Rosh Hashana as the embodiment of that covenant. We are the Jewish people - whether we are “there” in-person or “there” wherever we are. Our stories matter. Our prayers matters. The commitments that we take upon ourselves will make the future. So let’s imagine. Let’s imagine the stories and let’s make those stories.
