COMPOSER FEATURE Born in Detroit in 1945, Dennis Arlan Hirschbein (pseud: Dennis Arlan) was an accomplished singer, pianist, composer, and choirmaster. He completed his Master of Music Degree in Composition at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1967, including his dissertation: “Beowolf: an epic cantata.” For the next 10 years, he performed as pianist for several prestigious companies: Boston Opera, Dallas Civic Opera, the Milwaukee Symphony, The Song of Norway Festival, Manhattan Savoyards, and the Denver Symphony. During this period, he continued to write music, including several children’s operas. He was the cantor during the High Holy Days for Hebrew Tabernacle in Washington Heights and was a cantorial student at HUC-JIR in New York. Tragically, however, he died of cancer in 1979 at the age of 33.

ACCESSIBILITY SHABBAT Accessibility is a core CBST value. We thank UJA-Federation of New York and The Jewish Deaf Resource Center (www.jdrc.org) for their support. Additionally, UJA-Federation of New York has offered financial support through their Jewish Community Deaf Interpreting Fund. Jacqueline Roth will be the Guest Speaker and will emcee the First Fridays Nighttime Nosh panel with members of the Deaf Jewish community and interpreters 10 USEFUL FACTS: 1. Sign Language is not universal/international 2. “ASL”—American Sign Language 3. “ISL”—Israeli Sign Language 4. The sign language used in England is called BSL and is very different than ASL! 5. “Deaf” and “hard-of-hearing” are terms of identification that many prefer, rather than the pejorative “hearing-impaired.” 6. “deaf” vs. “Deaf”—People who describe themselves as Deaf with an uppercase “D” are typically people who identify as culturally Deaf and have a strong Deaf identity, whereas people who use a lowercase “d” may not be as connected to the Deaf Community and may be more specifically referring to their hearing loss. There are nuances to this that are too much for this little fact sheet! 7. “Interpreter”—This is the standard term for someone who works with spoken and signed languages (rather than “Translator,” which refers to someone who converts written languages from one language to another. Sometimes people may use the term “Signer,” which just refers to someone who signs.) 8. “CODA,” or Child of Deaf Adult(s)—This term may describe an actual child or a (Deaf or hearing) adult who grew up in a family with a Deaf parent or two. 9. Interpreters in synagogue are using ASL, even when Hebrew is spoken/sung, because they don’t know the Hebrew sign language used in Israel (ISL), nor do most Deaf congregants here in the United States. 10. There is no one correct/agreed upon way to sign any specific prayer, or even how to sign the word/concept G-d. You may have learned from someone, for example, how to “sign the Shema,” but what you have learned is one interpretation, and someone else’s may differ. A deaf/Deaf person or an interpreter may even sign it a few different ways in the course of one service!

PRAYER for OUR COUNTRY Our God and God of our ancestors,

bless this country and all who dwell within it. Help us to experience the blessings

of our lives and circumstances, To be vigilant, compassionate, and brave. Strengthen us when we are afraid, Help us stay angry, So that our anger motivates us to action. Help us to feel our fear, So that we do not become numb. Help us to be generous with others, So that we raise each other up. Help us to be humble in our fear,

knowing that as vulnerable as we feel, there are those at greater risk, and that it is our holy work to stand with them.

Help us to taste the sweetness of liberty, To not take for granted the freedoms won

in generations past or in recent days. To heal and nourish our democracy,

that it may be like a tree planted by the water whose roots reach down to the stream; it need not fear drought when it comes, its leaves are always green (Jeremiah 17:8).

Source of all Life, Guide our leaders with righteousness, Strengthen their hearts,

but keep them from hardening. That they may use their influence and authority to

speak truth and act for justice (Isaiah 16:3-5). May all who dwell in this country

share in its bounty, enjoy its freedoms, and be protected by its laws.

May this nation use its power and wealth to be a voice for justice, peace, and equality for all who dwell on earth.

May we be strong and have courage To be bold in our action and deep in our compassion, To discern when we must listen and when we must act, To uproot bigotry, intolerance, misogyny, racism,

discrimination, and violence in all its forms, To celebrate the many faces of God reflected

in the wondrous diversity of humanity, To welcome the stranger and the immigrant

and to honor the gifts of those who seek refuge and possibility here, as they have since before this nation was born.

Let justice well up like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream (Amos 5:24)
