Park Plaza Newsletter 1 March 2019: Volume 11 Issue 3 “When you teach your son, you teach your son’s son.” Park Plaza March Newsletter Elly Bauman, Executive Director Shabbat/Holiday Lighting Times: 3/1 4:30-4:50 3/8 4:36-4:56 3/15 6:17-6:37 3/22 6:25-6:45 3/29 6:33-6:53 Chag Purim Sameach! I hope everyone will join us for our Purim Party on March 17 – please invite your families to join us. I want to bring your attention to a few important things that we are working on: Emergency Call System: We are compiling a list of residents and families who would like to be included in the Emergency Call System. A phone call and/or text will go to everyone on the list when there is a building wide emergency. The list will include all residents’ phone numbers and caregivers. If family members would like to be in the system - we are limiting it to 2 family members per resident. We will be asking everyone to agree to receive phone calls. The system should be operable by the end of the month. Family members can email Elly if they want to be included. Domestic Water Pipe Replacement Park Plaza has experienced leaking from its domestic water system for a number of years. It was found that the water system was built out of galvanized steel pipes which have deteriorated causing pinhole leaks in the pipes. As a result, the galvanized steel pipes of the domestic water system will be replaced with copper pipes. The project will be done in phases to minimize disruption. We will begin with the ground floor horizontal water pipes that are located primarily in the ceiling of the ground floor public areas and will not affect any apartments. This work began on Monday, 2/18, and will be done in 5 phases: the east wing, the south wing, the west wing, the atrium and the lobby/conference room. Each phase will take approximately 1 week. Simultaneously, we will also replace the 6th floor horizontal water pipes which are located primarily in the corridor ceiling and will not affect any apartments. This work will be done in 4 phases: the east wing, the south wing, and the west wing which will each take 1 week, and the atrium area which will take 2.5 weeks. There will be 2 nights where the water will be shut down for a few hours. This will be done overnight so that disruption is minimized The second phase is the pipe replacement in the apartments. This is planned to begin after Passover. This work will be done in 7 phases to group apartments together as efficiently as possible. Each apartment will be affected for approximately 3 weeks. Since the pipe replacement will affect the kitchen and bathroom(s), residents will need to temporarily relocate to one of our furnished, vacant apartments. A detailed timeline of when each apartment will need to be vacated will be published at the beginning of March. New Rabbi Hire We are very excited to welcome Rabbi Eitan Allen to the Park Plaza family as our Rabbi/Chaplain. Rabbi Allen will be starting after Purim. Spotlight on the Kitchen

So many wonderful things arehappening in our kitchen! We have added a soda

machine with Coke Zero, Sprite Zero, Fresca and seltzer. ese avors are available every day for your enjoyment, except on Shabbos.

You may have noticed new Lazy Susan’s with caddies that hold many delicious spices and condiments. If there is something you would like to see added, please let Elly or Adina know and we will be happy to add it.

We will no longer be serving melon until it is back in season, but have many delicious and nutritious seasonal fruits for your enjoyment. Please ask your server for a list.

In addition, we have added a limited selection of gluten free items. We now have ousand Island, French, and Italian salad dressing every day. Be sure to tell your server which choice you would like and if you want something we don’t o er we will do our best to add it.

We held our very rst Food Focus Group this month, with the focus being on Saturday dinner. Many ideas and suggestions were given, as well as recommendations on how we can improve in certain areas. Some of you came up with wonderful ideas that we are going to try to implement. ank you to Miriam Suss for the idea of lox and bagels served with pareve cream cheese.

We will be adding strawberry soup and borsht on a more regular basis at the Saturday dinner. An adjustment to the breaded chicken will be made to have less breading as well as adjusting the temperature of the cholent to keep it warm throughout service.

Please remember that the kitchen works on an 8 week cycle so if you don’t see changes right away it’s because we might be in the middle of a cycle. Also, you don’t have to wait for the meeting to discuss issues. We have a suggestion box at the reception desk and Adina is in the dining room every day at lunch.

e kitchen sta work very hard to serve you nourishing and delicious meals every day and are open to hearing new ideas. If you have a recipe you would like the kitchen to use, please give it to Elly or Adina and we will be happy to try it.

The Wellness Center CornerAnnette Fontanez BSN, RN

Gladys Whal is an 86-year-old woman who lives in Park Plaza. She grew up in Arkansas and attended Marked Tree grade School. Gladys went to

high school in Washington D. C. for 1 year and High School in Tennessee for the next 3 years. She claims that education changed drastically since the days that she was in school. She claims that our education is better! “Back in the day they just taught us the basics, and now even a 4 year old can do anything on a computer”

When Gladys was 20 years old, she was in college and she claims she was very immature. At the age of 22, she quit college and got married! By the age of 30, she was raising her children; she lived in Tennessee and watched her children while her husband was in medical school. At this age, Gladys was much smarter

because she grew up. At age 40, Gladys and her husband moved to Wisconsin because her husband le the Navy a er serving for 5 years. By this time, they had three children. At age 50 their two older children were teens and attended college and their younger son was in the Yeshiva of the South. At age 60 her kids had gotten married and she had some grandchildren. While in her 70’s her husband passed away, and now in her 80’s she is in Park Plaza.

Major life events were celebrated simply; no family lived near so it was just the few of them. Gladys lived through World War 2 and was living in America at the time. Her family did everything they could do to get their family who were in the Holocaust to come back and thank G-D they were successful. Her family convinced their grandmother to come and she made it on the last transport into America. A er her grandmother made it to America she died from a broken heart.

Gladys is a happy resident at Park Plaza.

e reason she moved here was because she has kids that live in Chicago that take care of her! Gladys daily routine is quite relaxed. She gets up and relaxes in her apartment, she then comes down to eat lunch and heads upstairs to read or knit a erwards. She also plays rummy-Q, eats supper, and then goes to bed.

Gladys re ects back at her life, and the message she gave to me was that I should get the most education I can get. Education is something that no one can take away from you!

Meeting and hearing Mrs. Wahl’s words were inspiring and upli ing!

Shaindel is a senior at Bais Yaakov High School of Chicago. She loves coming to Park Plaza with her siblings. Every time she comes to visit, Shaindel feels rejuvenated, happy and upli ed by this special experience of having the opportunity to connect with the residents of Park Plaza. It is by giving that you gain! Shaindel says that she gains much more than she give. “ e encouragement, love and happiness that the residents have given me is something that will truly stick with me forever. Now we are not just friends, we are family!”

Tips for Reducing Sugar in Your Senior’s Diet

Americans, on average, eat more sugar than people in any other nation. e amount of sugar consumed on a daily basis has steadily increased over the years, even as people have received warnings about consuming excess sugar. Reducing the amount of sugar in the diet can be a valuable step toward health for anyone, you should know this can be even more important for the elderly.

Many seniors struggle with health problems that are worsened by sugar, making reducing this sugar an invaluable part of preserving their health as they age in place. Fortunately, there are many simple ways you can cut down on the amount of sugar in your senior’s diet on a daily basis.

Use these tips to reduce sugar in your senior’s diet:

* Cut out sodas. is is the leading

source of sugar in the average American’s diet and accounts for a huge number of calories on a regular basis.

* Learn to read nutritional labels and make sure you and your senior read the labels on all foods and beverages they consume.

* Avoid having sugar out on the table. Your senior is much less likely to add sugar to their food and beverages if they do not have it out in front of them.

* When choosing packaged fruits, look for those packaged in natural juice without added sugar. Avoid anything that says “syrup”.

* Sweeten foods such as oatmeal or pancakes with fruit rather than sugar.

* When baking, replace sugar with unsweetened applesauce.

* Look for natural sweetener alternatives such as monk fruit.

* Add more avor to recipes using spices such as cinnamon and ginger rather than sugar.
