THINGS I’VE LEARNED FROM OWNING A MODEL A

Model A ownership has taught me a lot and

not just about owning a Model A. First of all, Model A owners are probably the

some of the nicest folks on earth. You may find yourself stuck on the side of the road, but if you’re with STA folks, you won’t be alone; someone, or many someones, will always stay behind to make sure you eventually make it.

Plan to be flexible. You may intend to go to a parade, church, or a tech seminar in your Model A, but always have a backup plan or at least a good book to read. Just because the car makes it to the top of the driveway doesn’t mean you’ll get where you planned to go. But if you’re in an A, I can al-most guarantee someone, an A owner or not, will stop to see if he can assist.

Always bring water: for people, pets, and cars. Even if the car doesn’t break down, it’s often slow going and with no air conditioning (for most of us), a bottle of water can be a wonderful treat. Having a package of peanuts or two might be a good idea, too! And even if your car doesn’t need water, someone else’s might.

Never pass by on an opportunity to use a rest room. Enough said.

One should always change into old clothes be-fore attempting to work on the car. It doesn’t mat-ter how simple the job is, if there’s grease any-where, it will find a way of getting on my clothes. The better the clothes, the more likely it is that the grease, or rust, or dirt, will find me.

A good variety of tools, rags, jars, Ziploc bags, hand wipes, and (again) water can make even the most inept gal feel appreciated at a side-of-the-road “Technical Seminar” especially when others aren’t so well equipped.

Don’t head out on the road without a cell phone. Again, enough said.

Wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and bring a hat. Occasionally you will find yourself on the side of the road awaiting (or offering) assistance and you might as well be comfortable.

Wear layers. In SC and Georgia, it’s not unu-sual to have a change of seasons during the course of a day trip. This is especially true in an open car.

“When I was ______ my Model A” (fill in the blank with just about anything: washing, driving, parking) will almost always get a conversation go-ing. Everyone either has had a Model A, has a family member who has had one, has seen photos of his or her parents or grandparents in one, or wishes he had one.

These words of wisdom came from owning an A but they apply to the rest of life, too.

Wednesday, July 4th, people all across the

country will be celebrating our Nation’s birthday. This year the 4th being in the middle of the week and not conducive to turning the event into a long weekend for us working folks, you might be look-ing for something special to do to celebrate mid-week. Ah-ha, I have the perfect solution!

One of the best small town holiday celebra-tions occurs every July 4th in Gilbert, South Caroli-na. The event actually starts the night before with beauty pageants and the like. However, the festiv-ities really kick into high gear the morning of the 4th with a giant parade with thousands of specta-tors coming from miles around. Even some of our Washington congressmen get involved. Following the parade, multiple band shells are in full swing with various types of music, rides for the little ones, a petting zoo, arts and crafts, antique/classic car show, antique tractor show, and, of course, food galore! Also, peaches, peaches, peaches eve-rywhere. Peach concoctions to drink, peach cob-bler, peach ice cream, if you can put a peach on it or in it, I believe you will find it at Gilbert. Have you ever had a fried peach?

OK, so you got the message. Never mind the potential for being a hot day. Drink lots of water or sip on something peachy and you will be fine. There are lots of shady places to sit and enjoy the sounds and smells of one of the best-organized events in the area. Oh yeah, don’t forget to drive your Model A. Decorate appropriately and be part of the parade as this crowd really appreciates these antique cars.

Happy Birthday, America Craig

THE TRENTON PEACH FESTIVAL PARADE

June 16 in Trenton SC Seven STA cars and one local Shay reproduc-

tion 1929 Roadster met on a beautiful, sunny, pleasantly warm Saturday to participate in the Trenton Peach Festival parade. The route zig-zagged through the streets and crisscrossed the railroad tracks at the center of town so that every-one at the festival, wherever he happened to be in the park, had a chance to see the parade. The place was packed.

There were booth selling crafts; blow up “rides” for the kids; antiques; food vendors; a man making hand carved wooden bowls, spoons, and other primitive tools; and, of course, peaches.

Several other STA members were in the parade but drove non-A’s as part of the GASCar car club. Jim Mason was there with the Shriners. As always, the STA cars inspired “ooohh’s” and “aaaahh’s” from the by-standers.

If you weren’t there, you missed a great oppor-tunity to be with the club in your Model A.

The Lamb’s car was just peachy! Additional photos will be available on the web site.

A neighbor sent me this link to a video of a really neat collection of antique cars. Charlie Thomas made his fortune as an auto-mobile dealer. Now he collects the cars he couldn’t afford when he was just starting out. In this excerpt from his personal video biog-raphy, he shows off his favorites.

For those of you who don’t know how, click on the blue text with the left mouse button. Then left click on the “allow” button. Once the arrow appears on Charlie’s picture, click on it. It’s a little over 10 minutes long.

http://www.familylegacyvideo.com/video-clip/charlie-thomas-collector-3/

A collection of fascinating photos from the 1920s and 30s shows the dra-matic and tragic results of auto accidents in that era.

The pictures were taken in and around Boston, Massachusetts by Leslie Jones, who was staff photographer at the Boston-Herald Traveler newspaper from 1917 to 1956.

These 1920 & 1930’s photos are part of a collection of 34,000 prints which his family donated to the Boston Public Li-brary. Thank you, Abbie, for passing these on.

The MailOnline web site has published a few samples of automobile accidents from that collection. To view, left click on the blue address below then left click on “allow”.

Around 9 we will go to Richard’s garage—our primary task will be to disassemble Alan Stewart’s Model A en-gine. JIM FULLER COLLECTION TOUR

Eric Shogren

Join us on July 14th for a tour of Jim Fuller’s car and automobilia collection. Jim has an “early” ’28 Phaeton that’s mighty original. Also in his col-lection is a ’59 Eldorado rag top and Big Al, his 1940 Packard 180 – one the first 5600 cars with factory air conditioning! He has a few others and a tractor or two. We’ll start with breakfast at Auten’s Restaurant (969 Pine Log Rd. Aiken, SC in the Staples Shopping Center) at 8:30 and then do a quick 2.5 miles over to Jim’s “Retiree’s Play-ground” at 31 Enterprise Ave, behind Golden Har-vest Food Bank just off Banks Mill Road tentative-ly scheduled for 10:00am. If the time changes, an e-mail will be sent out.

From Auten’s to Jim Fuller’s: Turn right exiting the parking lot. Cross Whiskey Road. After 1.9 miles, turn right on Banks Mill Road (at a light with a convenience store on each side of the road); go 0.4 miles and turn right on Capital Dr.; go 0.3 miles and turn left.

VINTAGE VISIONS Anne Neely-Beck

Needlecraft Magazine July 1931 offer

three Hoover dresses all made up and ready to wear for $1.00 each plus 10 cents extra for postage. Each came with embroidery thread so you could embroider a design on them.

Skymore is made of tan linene and blue

self-tone woven gingham. Park Street is made of tan linene and

brown self-tone woven gingham. Lawn Dale is tan linene and green self-

tone woven gingham. Hoover dresses got their name during

the Depression when Hoover was president. He handed out wrap a-round-aprons along with food during the Depression. Hence can the name Hoover dress that wrapped a-round.

Editor’s note: I find no special meaning for “linene” which appears to be a misspelling of linen used throughout this 1931 ad though perhaps it was a spelling that was in vogue back then rather than a misspelling.

And another: For those of you who don’t know it, there are ways to enlarge the on-line newsletter so you can read the tiny print of the ad. Look in the tool bar for the adjust-ment. See below.
