Background The Shadow Fold is a rip in the land that is full of creatures called Volcra. The rip was created through the Darklings greed, lust for power and war.Troops from Ravka, Fjerda and Shu Han are constantly fighting off the Volcra in the Fold.

SummaryWhen the novel begins, Alina is a soldier in a surveying unit with her best friend, Mal, who works as a military tracker. Alina is on a voyage to West Ravka from Ravka, across the Shadow Fold.While traversing across the fold, she and her fleet are attacked and Alina is wounded, which then causes her to emit a blinding light which scares the Volcra away.Afterward she is taken to the Darkling, who is one of the most powerful people in the nation, after the King.

Summary CtdWhen he realizes that shes a Sun Summoner, he has her trained, hoping she will be the one to do away with the Shadow Fold. He then has Mal set out to track down a herd of powerful deer in order to retrieve stag antlers. The Darkling plans on making a necklace from the stag's antlers to amplify Alina's power.When Alina learns that the Stag antlers will give the Darkling complete control over her powers, she and Mal set out to find the deer themselves so she can kill it. However, once they find it, Alina cannot bring herself to kill it.

Summary CtdThe Darkling does instead, and is able to control her powers. Just as he assumes full control of the darkness, Alina regains control over her powers, because she realizes she can exercise the power of mercy to save Mal from being thrown overboard into the Fold. She and Mal then escape the Fold, leaving the Darkling to an uncertain fate.

The Hero: Alina StarkovAlina grew up as an orphan due to both her parents being killed in the war.When she was 8 she was tested to see if she had Grisha blood. She did not.Because she wasnt Grisha when she was of age she was conscripted and had to join the battle

Who is the New Dystopian hero?Underdog: The new dystopian hero is someone who started very low and couldnt recognize their power, both physical and metaphorical, and manages to come out on top.Takes advantage of her surroundings: Once Alina recognized what the Darkling wanted to do, she took her training more seriously so she could be prepared to overcome himSelfless: Alina was willing to kill herself as away to keep the Darkling from using her powers.

Brave: Alina is willing to do almost anything to free herself and to help free the people of the Darklings controlFlawed: Its hard for someone to learn what is happening and the truth of things if they dont screw up every now and then.Young: the younger generation has an easier time recognizing the bad in society and has the drive to do something about it

So what does it all mean?GrishaDivision of power: Giving one person too much power caused the creation of the Fold, the power the Darkling held was never enough.Our societyDivision of Power: While a rip in the land may not happen in the US we have a system of checks and balances that allows for us to make sure the legal system stays fair and that power is equally distributed amongst those in those positions.

So what does it all mean ctdGrishaWar: Because of the threat of the Volcra the people are constantly at battle with enemies to reclaim their land and keep it maintained (at least everyone who isnt the Darkling)Our societyWar: War is never good and the US has been in many. War can rip apart a society and damage the foundation of a nation if prolonged. The warning is to take a more diplomatic approach to issues between nations and peoples.
