Some of us are born explorers, some of us are born inventors, but only a handful of us can be branded as innovators.

In 1987, 20 year-old Shailendra left his career as a professional cricketer in England and stumbled into the world of advertising. He joined his elder brother Harindra as partner in the 3 year-old advertising busi-ness, Percept Advertising.

In those early years, Shailendra’s success came from analyzing global advertising published in international magazines and adapting these trends to suit Indian customers. Innovation was the name of the game, but the key ingredient in the formula for success was an acute understanding of the Indian consumer.

Within a few short years, this small advertising agency became India’s leading homegrown commu-nications group, producing over 2,000 award winning ad campaigns for some of the best known Indian and multinational clients.

“The single most important factor that Percept brought to the table for Hero Honda is the emotional connect with the customer. With Percept’s ‘Desh Ki Dhadkan’ campaign, we managed to go beyond the functional as-pects of the product and connect with the consumer emotionally.

long time friend of Shailendra Singh.

Hero Honda‘Desh Ki Dhadkan’, the intellectual property conceptualized by S.S., was so strong in positioning the brand that it is still used in all core communication, across all products, even today.

Siyaram‘Coming Home to Siyaram’ is one of India’s longest running cam-paigns. Percept used leading celebrities including Bipasha Basu, Lara Dutta, Boris Becker, M.S. Dhoni, Ajay Jadeja, and Dino Morea, to generate a cult for the campaign, and the brand.

PantaloonThe numerous innovative brand identity campaigns executed by Percept over the past decade transformed brand Pantaloon into India’s leading retailer.

Indian National Congress Percept’s ‘Jai Ho’ campaign and slogan gave a voice to the masses in the 2009 General Elections in India. ‘Jai Ho’ commer-cials showcased the achievements and progress of the Con-gress over the past five years and launched the campaign with immense popularity. In 2011, Percept/H won the creative and media mandate for the Indian National Congress towards the Uttar Pradesh & Ut-tarkhand election campaign with an aim to become victorious in these states after a long spell of 22 years.

Government of India Percept/H was awarded the massive ‘Bharat Nirman’ campaign in 2007. The creative thought ‘Azadi’ communicated the new avenues being opened up for rural masses through various de-velopmental schemes and reached all corners of the country.

SaharaShailendra Singh coined “Bharat hai humara, hum hai Sahara”, the slogan that built the brand. To match the unprecedented standard of luxury living they offered, Percept launched Sa-hara’s Aamby Valley City in 2004 with a phenomenal marketing campaign, featuring the biggest celebrities of the day including Aishwarya Rai, Amitabh Bachchan, Boris Becker, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag and Michael Johnson, among others.

Toyota The big idea, ‘Uncompromise’, introduced the world to the Fortuner, an SUV that provided a fine balance between rugged power and stylish luxury. The campaign resulted in the brand overachieving sales targets and attaining the No.1 position in the mid-SUV market.Later, the Toyota Bharosha TV commercial, created by Percept/H, created a mass connect with consumers across India.

Force IndiaIn a cricket crazed, one-sport nation, Shailendra Singh overcame all obstacles to create excitement and loyalty for a new sport by marrying the attributes of F1 with the consumer mindset.

Reid & Taylor In India’s first ever advertising tie-up with an international celeb-rity, Percept used Pierce Brosnan to position Reid and Taylor’s ‘luxury suiting’ with the tagline ‘Bond with the Best’.

Bharti‘Proud to be Indian, Proud to be Bharti’ was conceptualized by S.S. and touched the hearts of a billion Indians by emotionally translating Bharti’s new brand identity.

CanonPercept Limited played an important role in building Canon as the leader in digital photography in India by roping in Sachin Tendulkar for the TV commercial ‘India’s Nights Made Beautiful’. Percept also partnered in activation for the Canon Photo Mara-thon and workshops across pan-India.

In the 1990s, content was king. In the 2000s, packaging was God. Now, ideas rule the world.

There is no question that Percept is a pioneer in the realm of ideas and concepts. Big ideas, turned into big experiences. The source of the inexhaustible database of ideas, is Shailendra Singh. His desire to go beyond the status quo and consistently innovate, has led to the creation of India’s most memorable intellectual properties.

In 2008, Shailendra Singh was voted the ‘12th Most Powerful Player in Bollywood’, by Filmfare Magazine. In 2009, Percept Pictures was listed as the 4th most powerful entity in Bollywood on the Filmfare Power List – no minor accomplishment for a company that was barely five years old.

It all started with a small production company, Tyger Productions, floated by Percept to create TV com-mercials for Percept’s advertising clients. Tyger was responsible for Percept’s entry into the content business in 1999, with the feature film Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi. In 2004, Tyger Productions was officially rechristened as Percept Picture Company (P.P.C.).

From the critically acclaimed Page 3, to the rib-tick-ling comedy Malaamal Weekly, India’s first animation feature film Hanuman, to the National Award winning Kanchivaram, Shailendra’s deep understanding of audiences, genres and markets led to the produc-tion of a wide gamut of meaningful and commercially viable cinema. In a short span of 6 years, P.P.C. has produced and distributed over 60 commercial feature films and made a name for itself as ‘A Studio with a Difference’.

Shailendra’s work in content does not end with cinema. In the TV Programming industry, he was an integral part of the re-birth of one of India’s lead-ing Hindi G.E.C.s, Sahara One, launching India’s first youth-oriented fictional serial, ADA, and Powerr Trip, a trailblazer in the cluttered talk show offerings, hosted by Shoba De. He also commissioned the weekly soap Woh Rehne Waali Mahlon Ki, breaking the 21:00 hrs prime time band wide apart, and India‘s first live dial out game show, Dial One Aur Jeeto.

Shailendra was also responsibile for launching Filmy, the Hindi language movie channel, in 2006.

Throughout the years, S.S. is perhaps best known as ‘the face of Indian sports marketing’. He gave up his own cricketing career in 1987, yet his passion for sports drove him to launch and promote many new sporting initiatives in India.

In 1994, he setup Percept D’Mark (P.D.M.) and in a short span of time, captained the company to be-come India’s leading Experiential and Sports Market-ing Agency. His passion, combined with his business acumen, has resulted in significant landmarks for the Indian sports marketing industry. He envisioned a huge opportunity in the popularity associated with cricket to conceptualize a mega deal between BCCI and Sahara. This translated into the famous INR 100 crore sponsorship of the Indian Cricket Team and changed the very dynamics of the sports sponsor-ship business in India.

Credited as the man who gave birth to ‘Cricketain-ment’ in India, his contribution to revolutionizing the sport has found a special mention in The IPL hand-book. Many years before the billion-dollar IPL league was launched, it was S.S. who organized the same format matches, known then as ‘Masala Matches’.

Recently, S.S. shifted his focus from cricket to pro-moting alternate sports in India, including Soccer, Tennis, Golf, Cycling, Wrestling, with Boxing being his personal favorite.

Visionary, yet pragmatic, he is presently working to popularize Boxing through his recently launched fran-chise Fight Night, which has already garnered incred-ible popularity and many fans across the country.

Personally associated with over 250 celebrities through endorsements, appearances, movies and live entertainment, SS’ affair with Talent Management started quite early in his career.

At a time when most of the celebrities in India were managed by their ‘secretaries’, he was the first to spot the opportunity for professional Talent Manage-ment Services in India. In 2007, he launched the Ce-lebrity Management Services wing of PDM, Percept Talent Managment.

He was also largely responsible for bringing big buck endorsements to sports talent. At one point in time Percept was handling 9 of the eleven top Indian cricketers playing for the National Team. Percept can be credited for starting the entirely new indus-try, Sports Management, in the Talent Management domain in India.

Responsible for turning many Talents into Brands, with an identity that was beyond their realm and lifespan, the diverse talent pool that he identified and nurtured included Bollywood celebrities, Sports Stars, Musicians, Writers, Directors, Fashion Design-ers and International icons.

With over 10 years of experience in Talent Manage-ment and numerous firsts and successes to his credit, S.S. has established himself as a visionary that is miles ahead of the race.

We have a responsibility individually and collec-tively towards a broader constituency, which in-cludes the entire community we operate in. The only society that succeeds today is one that’s founded on mutual respect, compassion and collaboration. We have the power of choice, and need to break the mould and move beyond cor-porate social responsibility to social innovation and creating enduring solutions for humanity. Philanthropy and altruism to society is a growing unstoppable force, and I believe that together we can make this world a much better place to live in.
