What are social skills?
Any skill that makes it easier to effectively interact and
communicate with others.
When students feel welcome and connected, they feel more at home, more like they belong. This is critically important because everyone functions better in a comfortable environment.
-Professor Joseph Napier
Words go into the body. So they can cause us to be well and hopeful and happy and high-energy and wondrous and funny and cheerful. Or they can cause us to be depressed. They get into the body and cause us to be sullen and sour and depressed and, finally sick.

Proactive vs. Reactive
Proactive- taking a positive step up front to head off trouble without waiting for something negative to happen and then reacting to it.
Reactive- waiting for something negative to happen and then reacting to it.
Why kids need to KNOW and CARE ABOUT each other.
• Peer culture is a powerful influence on student behavior.
• Teachers must shape a positive peer culture
• Avoid creating a culture that allows students to think that cruel words and intolerant behavior will be tolerated without consequences
Why kids need to KNOW and CARE ABOUT each other.
• Children need caring attachments to adults and to each other.
• They are more likely to accept the values and rules of the group when they feel accepted and affirmed.
Why kids need to KNOW and CARE ABOUT each other.
• When students are part of a caring community in the classroom, they learn morality by living it.
• When they receive respect and care, and practice giving it in return, respect and care gradually become habits---part of their character.
“I need” vs. “May I please have”

3- Body Language: about 45 - 50% of our message
The Golden Rule
• Treat other people the way you would like them to treat you.
