Shamballa Jewels
Ancient scriptures tell us of a mythical kingdom hidden in a valley in the Himalayas. A harmonious place populated by enlightened and compassionate people, the Kingdom of Shamballa when translated from Sanskrit means ‘a place of peace and tranquility’. Evocative of spiritual icons, symbols, and prayer beads used since the dawn of time, our jewellery encourages you to fi nd your inner Shamballa - your inner compassion and wisdom. Reminiscent of places near and far, of spiritual stories ancient and new, our jewellery is designed to trigger
curiosity and inspire conversation.
Shamballa Jewels
Mads Kornerup originally designed the Shamballa Bracelet in 2001 for music impresario Jay Z, who came in search of a unique piece. A yoga and meditation practitioner, Mads created a bracelet inspired by prayer beads – a braided macramé bracelet featuring gold beads with Jay Z’s initials, his company logo, two half carat diamonds and his zodiac sign. An icon was born. Never before had fi ne jewellery been presented with such refi ned casualness and offered such a high level of customisation. Following the success of the design, Mads and Mikkel Kornerup established Shamballa Jewels in 2005, in Copenhagen, Denmark. The brothers continue to create jewellery fuelled by tradition and innovation. A rising star in the fi ne jewellery segment, Shamballa Jewels is present in over 30 countries, with stand-alone stores in Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Zurich. The design repertoire includes customisable bracelets, necklaces, cuffl inks, earrings and rings which are set, braided and polished by hand in Copenhagen, Denmark. Shamballa Jewels’ personalised designs have earned the custom of men and women alike. Sucesso entre a realeza e astros de Hollywood, os braceletes Shamballa são inspirados na lenda de um reino de paz e espiritualidade no Himalaia. Mas foi no Brasil que o criador da marca teve seu maior encontro com a naturezaTexto Suzana Camargo
O ano era 1990 e Mads Kornerup, então com 19 anos, decidiu explorar o mundo. Um amigo sugeriu que ele viesse ao Brasil e passasse um ano no País. O jovem dinamarquês não hesitou e embarcou na aventura. “Me apaixonei pelo país, pelo povo e pela língua”, conta. “Ainda hoje, adoro falar português.” No dia 8 de abril daquele mesmo ano, quando completava 20 anos, viajou para Lençóis, na Bahia, região conhecida pelas jazidas de diaman-tes no século 19. Perto dali, escalou e chegou ao alto da Cachoeira da Fumaça. “Foi naquele dia, diante daquela vista, que me dei conta de que eu só seria realmente inteiro se estivesse em contato com a natureza e que a vida me foi concedida nesse jardim mági-co chamado Terra.” Kornerup diz que deve ao Brasil e à Cachoeira da Fumaça o despertar para a pessoa que ele é.
E hoje o designer dinamarquês é o badalado diretor criativo da Shamballa Jewels. Suas joias são comercializadas em diversos países da Europa, América do Norte e Ásia. Os braceletes criados por ele já foram vistos no pulso de celebridades como Gwyneth Paltrow, Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani, do rapper Jay Z e das princesas da Dinamarca e da Noruega. No ano passado, Kornerup inaugurou com orgulho a primeira flagship store da Shamballa em Copenhague e já planeja abrir lojas próprias em Londres, Paris e Nova York. O designer trabalha em parceria com o irmão Mikkel, responsável pela área financeira e de produção da empresa.
Nascido em uma família que atua no ramo imobiliário e da construção civil, Kornerup sempre teve uma estreita relação com a arte e a espiritualidade. No Brasil, conheceu a beleza e a energia das pedras preciosas. Depois, viajou para o Oriente. Esteve no Ja-Fo

Inseparável A peça preferida de Kornerup tem contas de ouro rosa com letras do alfabeto romano e sânscrito com as iniciais dos nomes de seus dois filhos, Storm e Nor
pão, Índia, Nepal e Tailândia. “A ioga e a meditação me levaram até lá”, conta. Nesses países, teve a chance de conhecer de perto o trabalho de ourives e descobriu a riqueza do trabalho feito à mão.
Amuleto da sorteA Shamballa Jewels é fruto da experiência multi-
cultural de Mads Kornerup mundo afora. O nome foi inspirado em um reino místico de Shamballa, no Hi-malaia, descrito em escrituras ancestrais. Seria um lugar povoado por pessoas iluminadas e cheias de compaixão. Os dois raios da estrela de Shamballa, que estão nas contas dos braceletes da marca, simbolizam a força advinda da mente pura e consciente. “Dese-nho joias inspiradas em símbolos espirituais, textos e iconografias, de tal forma que um bracelete de ouro e diamantes pode se transformar em algo cheio de tra-dição e significado”, acredita. “Espero que, ao usá-la, a pessoa se lembre de que é preciso ter compaixão e es-timule quem estiver a sua volta a fazer o mesmo.”
Mas nem só de paz e amor foi feito o começo dos negócios da joalheria. Como morava em Nova York, Kornerup decidiu abrir uma loja na cidade. Foi

“Pretendo incluir mais turmalinas brasileiras nas minhas peças”, diz Kornerup
obrigado a fechar as portas por causa do atenta-do terrorista de 11 de setembro de 2001. “Por
seis meses, não consegui vender nada. Os Es-tados Unidos estavam em guerra, os turistas eram poucos, e os norte-americanos econo-
mizavam dinheiro e não gastavam com joias.” De volta à Dinamarca, criou, nesse mes-
mo ano, a peça que fez da Shamballa Jewels uma marca conhecida. Segundo ele, o sucesso da pulseira se deu principalmente pela falta de joias que pudessem ser usadas de ma-neira mais relaxada. “Mesmo buscando peças mais informais, as pes-soas ainda querem ter um bracelete com diamantes, design exclusivo e qualidade inigualável”, diz Kornerup. A tradição do design clean e sofisticado da Escandinávia é evidente nas criações da marca.
Entre 2007 e 2012, a pulseira virou febre internacional. A prefe-rida de Kornerup, que ele usa todos os dias, tem contas de ouro rosa com letras do alfabeto romano e sânscrito com as iniciais dos nomes de seus dois filhos, Storm e Nor.
Atualmente, seis profissionais e especialistas em ourivesaria produzem manualmente as joias na sede da empresa, em Cope-nhague. Além de desenhar, o diretor criativo da Shamballa trança e monta os braceletes. Não há lançamento de coleções, já que as pe-ças são customizadas. A marca fabrica ainda colares, anéis, brin-
cos e abotoaduras. “Gosto de introduzir novos estilos, mas não temos uma ditadura de moda ou estação.”
A experiência de Kornerup no Brasil foi tão marcante que é cita-da no texto do site da Shamballa sobre o processo de criação das joias. Em algumas peças produzidas em edição limitada, Kornerup usou turmalina Paraíba, pedra brasileira considerada uma das mais raras do mundo. “Espero incluir mais turmalinas brasileiras e quartzo rutilado nas minhas peças em breve”, avisa. Curiosamente, o dinamarquês ainda não conseguiu trazer suas criações para o país de que tanto gosta. Segundo ele, os altos impostos de importação inviabilizam o negócio. Mas deixa escapar que, se encontrasse um parceiro comercial, adoraria vender suas joias por aqui.

Mads Kornerup: The Shamballa bracelet design is one of the most easily recognisable styles today. Whether at a beach in Ibiza, the catwalks of Paris or the Himalayas, many people know what a Shamballa bracelet is. For me that signifies our rise as a true global brand. The word Shamballa is a mantra of wisdom and compassion and I look forward to hearing this mantra in all nooks of the world.

Mads: Spirituality is about offering the best you can; there-fore I see no disconnect between commerce and spirituality. Design should have a purpose and a story to tell, and our jewellery carries forward the message of the Kingdom of Shamballa — of wisdom and compassion. Most of our clients can afford everything they want; what we offer them is some-thing meaningful, a positive reminder. I continue my mission of creating meaningful jewellery.
Mads: For me it has been the Korne Pavé bracelet — it is a masculine piece with leather and customisable diamond shields. While I love designing for women as well, my passion is designing for men. The Korne Pavé is a handsomely crafted piece, which is quite heavy on the diamonds. It gives me a lot of satisfaction to see men wearing it. When we started [the business], men were still wary of wearing diamonds.
Mads: Apart from our new launches, my focus is also on our rare, limited-edition pieces. I am using larger carats of dia-monds [and] more white and black diamonds. The aim is to go rarer, magical and very exclusive. We will be revealing our new designs at Baselworld 2015, so can’t share much here.

zarytým buddhistou či aspoň ne-koketoval s jinými duchovními nau-kami, jako by snad ani nebyl. Ve světových metropolích jsou dnes na každém kroku rozesety buddhistické restaurace, čajovny, knihy i jídlo. Touhu moderní civilizace po mystičnu ostatně dokazuje i ZEN, který vás zásobuje nejmíň jed-ním duchovně laděným textem měsíčně. Tento trend zachytil i Mads Kornerup, spoluma-jitel šperkařské firmy Shamballa Jewels, jež pro-razila luxusními náramky ve stylu modlitebních korálků buddhistických mnichů. Šperky cestova-tele a jogína ověšeného korálky, který se v září na skok zastavil v Praze, nosí třeba dánská korunní princezna Mary, zpěvačka Beyoncé, návrhář Gi-orgio Armani či basketbalová legenda Michael Jordan, kteří za ně neváhají platit tisíce eur. Inspirován svými cestami se kdysi Mads rozhodl nejprve vozit náhrdelníky a náramky z Indie, Bali či Indonésie. V New Yorku, kde dlouho pracoval jako asistent módních fotografů, pak dovezené šperky prodával. „Vždycky jsem vše prodal za pár minut.“ Ať už to bylo předurčení osudu či ob-chodní cit, jak vyplnit díru na trhu, Mads začal šperky z drahých kamenů a kovů vyrábět sám.Před třinácti lety založil firmu, ke které se o tři roky později přidal i jeho bratr Mikkel. A tak vznikla Shamballa Jewels. V současnosti má ob-chody od Austrálie po Rusko, jižní Asii a nově i Českou republiku. „Záleží na mentálním stavu. Když na něco dlouho myslíte, je velká šance, že se v budoucnosti objeví něco, co vám k cíli dopo-může,“ říká s úsměvem Mads, který tvrdí, že vše, čeho v posledních dvaceti letech dosáhl, je dílem náhody. Stejně jako setkání s rapperem Jay-Z, pro něhož vytvořil první náramek z drhané šňůrky zdobené zlatými korálky s diamanty.Na název Shamballa přišel Mads během své-ho čtyřletého pobytu v Káthmándú, kde hledal vnitřní klid mezi hinduistickým a buddhistic-kým světem. Shamballa je mytické království skryté v nepřístupném údolí vysoko v Himála-ji. Doslovně přeloženo ze sanskrtu je to „místo
míru a poklidu“. Náramky Shamballa nosili již staří
Tibeťané, kteří věřili v je-jich kouzelnou a léčebnou
moc. Působí prý na Dharma-čakru, jež navozuje pokoj v duši.
„V buddhistickém umění je uzamčeno díky geografické poloze cosi tajemného. Moje
interpretace tamního světa jsou šperky, které vy-tvářím.“
Lagerfeldovo selfieÚstřední symbol a znak firmy, dvojité žezlo blesků (tibetsky Dordže Gjadam), je symbolem energie, která chrání nejen naše těla před vněj-ším nebezpečím, ale především naše vědomí před temnotou. Je vyjádřením stavu osvobozené mysli. Novou kolekci designérští bratři doplnili o pyramidy. „K jejich přidání mě inspirovalo se-tkání s mužem, který staví v Mexiku dřevěné py-ramidy a v nich pěstuje zeleninu a byliny. A těm se moc dobře daří,“ říká s nadšením Mads, který se prý nikdy necítil jako designér. „Dávám dohro-mady kousky a materiály, které se mi prostě líbí. Vlastně dělám šperky sobě na míru.“Všechny šperky Shamballa Jewels se vyrábějí z 18karátového zlata, čirých a barevných diaman-tů, drahokamů a perel s certifikací A až B.Na otázku, jak souvisí duchovno vložené do šper-ků s cenou, která začíná na třech tisících eurech, Mads odpovídá: „Vybírám drahé kameny, které jsou pro každou oblast nejvíce ceněné. Šperk je něco osobního, do čeho vkládáte víru i kus sebe sama. Navíc každý z náramků je originál, brouše-ný, leštěný i vázaný ručně.“ Kromě obyčejných movitých smrtelníků je hoj-ně nosí hollywoodské celebrity. „Některé známé osobnosti nás dokonce žádají o to, abychom jim korálky dali zadarmo, a oni nám za to udělají reklamu. Takhle ale náš byznys nefunguje. Mají stejné šance a možnosti koupit si je jako kdokoliv jiný, kdo o ně má zájem. Například Karl Lagerfeld je náš častý zákazník. Návrhy mu posílám vždy elektronicky. Když se mu šperk líbí, my jej vyrobí-me, jeho asistent vyzvedne a sám návrhář mi pak pošle své selfíčko,“ směje se Mads, který vypadá, že má vše zenově na háku.

Despite the general global recession, Danish brothers Mads and Mikkel Kornerup are enjoying increasing success with their exclusive Shamballa bracelets in new markets as well as on the homefront. They even have Karl Lagerfeld charmed by the wrist.
During last year’s haute couture shows in paris, mas-ter designer at Chanel Karl Lagerfeld gave Mads Ko-rnerup a big thank-you hug.
“It’s always me designing for everyone else, and it is so rare that someone designs for me,” he said with genu-ine affection to the Danish jewelry designer, when he found out that Mads Kornerup had had him in mind for the four bracelets he was wearing, without making it explicit. He had just placed them on display at the famous concept store Colette on rue Saint-Honoré, where Karl Lagerfeld happened to spot them himself.“I told him that it had always been my dream to put a little color on him, since he is the most achromatic dresser. So I was pleased to see him with the spectacu-lar green Columbian emerald dangling on his wrist, which I’d had in mind for him.”
This is very telling of the success of brothers Mads and Mikkel Kornerup, who founded Shamballa Jewels twelve years ago. They are ambitious, but in a humble hippie-sort-of-way. Their popular jewelry is not only set with the most precious of stones, but also offers the kind of inspiration that makes the wearer look beyond just the material value.
“I designed the first Shamballa bracelet in 2001, a cus-tom design for Jay-Z. Yoga and meditation were, and still are, an intrinsic part of my life, so I took inspira-tion from prayer beads and made Jay-Z a bracelet of gold beads held together by the macramé technique.
I was happy with what I created, but I didn’t dream that I would create a trend. In 2005, we launched our first diamond pavé balls, and we suddenly had a huge demand from the ladies.”
“Today, the Shamballa Bracelet is a generic style name, something that takes most brands many years and a long tradition of craftsmanship to achieve. It is still unreal when people mention a Shamballa brace-let in the same breath as a Cartier Love bracelet or a De Beers eternity ring. This unexpected success is what continues to inspire me to innovate,” says Mads Ko-rnerup, who leaves the business side to his brother Mikkel.The humble beginnings have now paid off. Despite
the recession, Shamballa has grown steadily, and at the fastest pace during the last few years. already pre-sent in 18 countries, they are now set to launch in three new regions, Dubai, Hong Kong, and Romania, and as we speak, they are negotiating with retailers in Brazil.
But their big pride is also the newly opened flagship store on the elegant Ny Østergade in central Copen-hagen, and the fact that the craftmanship is not out-sourced, but remains in Danish hands.
“Frankly, I don’t have a formula for how we man-aged to do it, other than staying true to our idea. as we don’t produce collections per se, our focus is on custom pieces. We introduce new designs whenever we feel we have an excellent design worth sharing.”
“The newest designs we unveiled — the flat lock bracelets — are inspired by Buddhist prayer flags and come in rich gemstones of emeralds, rubies, sap-phires, and moonstones that reflect the color of the prayer flags. The raw gems pass through the hands of seven master craftsmen over a period of seven days to come out as glistening squares.”
