EvEntsGerman Chamber of Commerce l Shanghai Events 2012:

Every year, the German Chamber of Commerce - Shanghai organizes a large variety of activities such as social events, seminars or workshops, offering its 1,450 member companies and non-members a platform to get involved, stay informed and increase their network. The Chamber network of professionals and business leaders includes the business community in Shanghai as well as in the neighboring provinces Zhejiang and Jiangsu, where the Chamber regularly holds business and social events in Hangzhou, Taicang, Suzhou, Kunshan and Changzhou, to just mention a few.

Nearly 100 events took place in Shanghai, with the Chamber Meetings being the monthly highlight. Our members spoke with expert speakers, socialized with decision makers from the Sino-German community and enjoyed a pleasant atmosphere in five-star hotels. Our workshops provide participants the opportunity to stay up-to-date on topics including human resources, automotive, tax and finance and many more. The topics are chosen in cooperation with professional workshop leaders and through a dialogue with our members. Issues of general importance are regularly addressed within the framework of established workshop series on subjects such as human resources, tax issues, legal questions and marketing matters. In 2012, two new workshop groups were added to our range of offerings, namely “Production & Logistics” and “Business & Society”.

The Chamber also supports the upcoming generation of leaders. The workshop “Wirtschaftsjunioren” is mainly addressed to young professionals, providing them with the chance to support their early career by attending special seminars, workshops and social events. Furthermore, the German “Praktikantenstammtisch” allows German interns and students to get to know each other.

In general, we do not merely host business events, but also organize social gatherings to strengthen the solidarity of the German community in and around Shanghai. For instance, we arrange “Stammtische” and four Inter-Chamber Mixers per year, offering great networking opportunities in a leisure atmosphere. For 15 years the yearly highlight of our social event calendar has been the “German Ball”. Every year, around 1,300 members of our Chamber meet under a different theme to dance, eat, drink, make friends and enjoy an unforgettable night. By now, the “German Ball” has become famous among the German business community not only in Shanghai, but throughout all of Greater China.

the monthly Chamber meeting has become a great opportunity for many members to stay informed about Chamber activities and meet other Chamber members, and even many non-members are regular participants. Every last thursday of the month, the Chamber organizes a large-scale dinner in the ballroom of a luxury hotel. Each evening has a special topic, and invites an expert speaker to share his or her thoughts with the audience. on average each Chamber meeting counts 150 participants, amongst whom are high-profile business leaders and decision makers. in order to make new business and social contacts, which is an integral aspect of the Chamber meeting platform, new members have the chance to introduce themselves to the community and present their businesses. they also have the opportunity to extend their networks beyond the german community, as Chamber meetings regularly attract local and international participants.

in short, Chamber meetings allow guests to enjoy dinner and drinks, to receive valuable information straight from specialists and to network with industry peers all at once.

The second Chamber Meeting of 2012 focused on the relationship between China and the EU. Speaker Dr. Markus Ederer gave an overview of the 14th EU Summit, and asked whether the relationship between the EU and China should be characterized as a strategic partner-ship or as a “marriage of convenience”. With his speech the EU ambassador also raised awareness of the different problems that both countries face today. China, for example, is struggling with demographic imbalances while the EU is confronted with the financial crisis. However, this year can be seen as a turning point in the partnership of China and the EU.

China´s Pioneers in German Companies - Danger or Enrichment?Held in GermanDate: 29th March 2010Panel Members: Mr. Frank Sieren | Journalist, Handelsblatt; Dr. Dahai Yu | Member of the board, Evonic Industries; Mr. Liu Zhengrong | Head of HR, Lanxess; Mr. Richard Zhang | President, Sued Chemie ChinaModerator: Mr. Ulrich Mäder | Chairman of the Board, POLYMAX (Shanghai) Trading Co. Ltd.; Board of Directors, German Chamber of Commerce l Shanghai

This Chamber Meeting focused on the topic “China’s Pioneers in German Companies: Threat or Opportunity?”. Journalist, author and documentarian Mr. Frank Sieren formed the head of the panel, and the “pioneers” provided insight into their first experiences in Germany. From the beginning of the discussion a pattern emerged: Chinese managers do not represent a threat to German companies, but rather a source of knowledge and bridge between cultures. Keeping in mind that Germany’s investments in China were still 20 times higher than China’s investments in Germany, it is necessary for the two countries to develop trust in each other.

About the Workshop:

The automotive industry remains a key industry for the development of the Chinese economy. Therefore, all companies operating in this sector constantly deal with opportunities and challenges of various kinds. All of our Chamber members strive to seize these opportunities and learn from each other in order to handle a variety of issues successfully. The goal of the workshop automotive is to contribute to this community and enhance the network within the sector.

That is why our events are mainly aimed toward representatives from the automotive industry who hold operative or strategic responsibility at their company. We are trying to provide a platform for people with the same interests and offer them the opportunity to share their experiences and improve their business connections. What helps the workshop leaders is that we share common interests with our participants.

In order to create new synergies we don’t want to focus too much on the presentation, but equally pay attention to the discussion and exchange of ideas among the audience, which are with no doubt very important aspects of each event.

Each workshop should be more than just a lecture, but instead should be a way for participants to express their own thoughts and personal opinions. Moreover, there will be two main thematic fields for the future. We are looking for members who can report on their specific challenges and best-practices in China, and the perception that others may have concerning our work is definitely a point of interest for us as well. Therefore we will keep on inviting representatives from Chinese automotive companies, political departments and universities to share their point of view and their expectations concerning our contributions to the market.

Topic: Corporate Citizenship and Social Innovation Speaker: Ms. Leigh-Anne Russels | Project Manager, NPI - Non Profit Incubator

About the Workshop:

It is no secret that community engagement approaches evolve swiftly in China, as markets mature, organizations grow and society changes. Responsibility also means different things to every company, and can be demonstrated through compliance, charity, volunteering, supply chain training, NGO partnerships and more. New approaches and forms of engagement provide opportunities to go beyond traditional corporate social responsibility and help tap into an organization’s collective intelligence, innovation and talent. Responsibility then equals shared value for both the business and the community.

That’s why we decided to set up Workshop business and society to address and discuss current trends related to community engagement. The workshop enables networking and cooperation among practitioners and promotes exchange of best practices at the interface of business and society, and aims to:

n Promote information exchange, knowledge transfer and the creation of strong ties between practitioners, peers and potential partners. n Foster creative partnerships and collaboration among participants, be they public or private actors, civil society representatives or entrepreneurs.n Strengthen the image of the German approach to corporate responsibility, and identify Germany’s VP in relation to other countries and how this potential could be better used.

We welcome participants from all sectors, private and public: industry, NGOs, charities, social entrepreneurs and other organizations. From the business community, not only CSR managers but also CEOs, communications, marketing, sustainability, HR, R&D or innovation managers, as well as any individuals who see potential benefits in engaging more with society are invited to participate.

The intention of this workshop is to explore the various ways business and society interact: it looks at various forms of engagement, discusses recent trends and introduces fresh perspectives beyond the traditional understanding of corporate social responsibility. Hence the workshop focuses on social innovation, entrepreneurship and the concept of shared value. The idea is to “get CSR out of the ‘CSR-box’” and foster a more integrated concept and approach to social responsibly and sustainability.

Topics and speakers are selected to offer insight to the workshop participants on current trends and trigger new thoughts, but also to offer access to interesting resources for the participant’s activities. But most importantly, the selection of topics and speakers also is a collective process. I try to engage in a lot of dialogues with companies and members of the workshop individually to check interests, needs and ideas, to then combine these ideas to best mirror the interests of the community.

About the Workshop:

Workshop controlling & finance provides a platform for discussion and experience sharing for executives from finance departments of corporations as well as bankers and finance professionals. In a fast developing and challenging business environment like China, it is key for representatives of multinational corporations to stay ahead of developments and exchange views and experiences with peers.

The workshop targets CFOs, finance directors, accountants, controllers, internal auditors, compliance managers, bankers, advisors and anyone who is interested in finance & controlling matters in China and can contribute to the discussion.

In each workshop, a key note speaker presents a pre-defined topic before the floor opens to the participants to contribute their discussion points. Topics are identified based on current hot topics, recent developments as well as practical experiences by all participants. Speakers are typically from corporations, banks and professional service providers to represent the different views on a topic.

The workshop leaders Alex and Marco are both employed with well-known professional service providers and focus in their daily work on the specific needs of German multinationals in China. With tax and accounting as their professional background and their long-term experience in China, they can guide the discussion with additional keywords and share further aspects and insights.

In 2012, the workshop hosted six events around topics like procurement controlling, RMB globalization, KfW financing, practical M&A experiences and the European debt crisis. For 2013, one workshop every two months should be expected on relevant topics for finance & controlling in China.

About the Workshop:

At our workshop we are trying to discuss topics which are important to the success of the company. In 2012 we were talking in particular about topics that deal with the problem of cost reduction. My motivation in 2012 ranged from wake-up calls to the creation of beneficial contacts. Moreover we are always looking for good examples in order to help German companies to do better than others.

Moreover, our workshops mainly address employees that are responsible for the steering of the company and that are willing to adapt and change the actual situation. Therefore we want to reach representatives of German companies in China as well as members of the head office in Germany.

Many companies struggle with various difficulties, and I think one of the most important is the understanding that more things can be done and moreover must be done! We have to measure experiences and methods and benefit from them. Furthermore, it is necessary to develop the motivation of our Chinese staff in order to profit from their thoughts and create new aims that we can reach together. Last but not least everyone is always seeking interesting business contacts and maintaining established relationships.

The target group we are focusing on with our topics is the middle class. We are aiming to anticipate points of interest and try to prompt new ideas that were not known before the workshop, making the evenings even more interesting and attractive to our attendants. Furthermore, we will try to deal with one topic over several days in order to gain deeper insight and spread the expertise in a more sustainable way.

About the Workshop:

Our HR workshop is addressing subjects of high relevance for German companies or joint ventures - many of them being small and mid-sized – in their operational and strategic HR activities in companies in and around Shanghai. Regardless of the business scope, the “fight for talent” remains one of the typical headaches for management and HR in China in recent years. Recruiting, retention and performance motivation for leaders and talents as well as expert staff remain in high focus. The workshops offer the chance to meet and exchange experience and ideas. Due to the concentration on German companies we try to create dialogues and discussions that focus on similar business culture backgrounds and help to develop a platform for trustful professional exchange.

Our target groups are senior and midlevel HR professionals as well as general managers from midsized companies. Competent consultants and service providers are also welcome, especially when they are willing to share practical experience and references with other members. Moreover the workshops shall inform and educate in HR and related fields. Compensation and benefits, legal issues, training and organizational development, leadership or best practice cases are a few of the very different themes to be presented. At the core is still the support of individuals and companies who deal with the widespread challenges in HR and work in foreign or Joint venture companies under the context of German (or German speaking) business culture. It is also important to bridge and sensitize to and for local business and work cultures.

In terms of topics, we are listening carefully to demand and questions from our members. Often, however, these questions are not easily articulated and everyone is encouraged to address ideas or questions for subjects to the workshop leader. In 2013 there is a wide range of interesting events coming up. For example we have begun with another look at leadership basics. The invitation of a very successful Chinese company to share their HR challenges is planned in the second quarter and a series of visits to companies who are willing to share their successes and concerns around organizational development, retention and training are planned. More and other subjects will depend on demand, but the annual compensation trend review will certainly be subject of one workshop in fall. In the coming months, Jörg Heil, as an experienced , pragmatic and well-connected expat manager of a successfully growing IT company, will take over the lead of this workshop and is much looking forward to your input and participation.

About the Workshop:

I am leading this workshop because I want to contribute to the German business community and share the knowledge and experiences that each of us has gained through the years. That is why the aim of this workshop is to create a live platform that allows us to exchange past experiences and talk about current and future developments of tax and law related topics in China, mostly in a cross border context.

Furthermore, the core profession of our attendants varies greatly. We mainly address decision makers of German invested companies such as CFOs, finance directors, corporate accountants, finance and HR managers. Moreover internal or external tax and legal counsels can definitely benefit from our workshops.

During the past years we have noted several problems that the majority of our attendants struggle with, but I assume that the biggest one would be the gap between the jurisdiction in theory on the one hand and the application of the law in practice on the other hand.

About the Workshop:

My motivation to host this workshop results from my personal experience I gained through 20 years working in management consulting. Moreover, I spent almost five years working as a key account manager and sales director for flexible packaging. That’s how my personal affinity for marketing and sales developed step by step. By hosting the Marketing & Sales Workshop I would like to motivate my network to contribute their expertise and share my own experiences as well.

Furthermore, our aim is to connect experts with interested Chamber members in order to create synergies. Nevertheless I am always open to new ideas and welcome everyone with an interesting marketing and sales topic to approach me. It is obvious that our workshop addresses to marketing and sales representatives. Besides that we welcome all employees that are interested in our topics, from interns to CEOs. I believe the biggest challenges in the marketing and sales process are the missing experience, lack of pro-activity and creativity of local employees.

In the past, most Chinese employees relied on their own network, or "guanxi", and struggled with cold calling in order to find new business partners. But this behavior is not up to date anymore: internationally educated Chinese are bringing back new methods and techniques and accelerating the transformation of the Chinese marketing and sales sector. Besides that, the most important tasks deal with training and control of the processes. There will be enormous changes in the future in China.

This workshop was initiated in November 2012.n November 29th

Topic: Shopfloor Management - 'Go & See' instead of "Meet & Mail" Speaker: Mr. Franz Michael Oppermann | General Manager, DMG (Shanghai) Machine Tools Co., Ltd.; Mr. Rainer Voelker | Director Competence Development, Staufen,Shanghai Consulting Academy Ltd.

About the Workshop:

Highly efficient factories as well as lean and stable supply chains are the main aims for all managers with responsibility in the fields of production and logistics. But it is sometimes very hard to achieve and even harder to maintain, especially in China. Workshop production & logistics supports its participants in terms of providing a forum for managers and engineers who want to get input from experts and share experiences about approaches, solutions and best practices.

If you are interested in topics like lean production, effective supply chain management, shopfloor management, continuous improvement and supplier development, you should join the group. Planned are four to six events per year composed of one or two presentations with a followed group discussion and social networking. Planned are also on-site trips to see how benchmark factories in China operate.

Our workshop may be of interest to general managers, COOs, plant managers, production managers, supply shain managers, logistics managers, engineers and anyone who is interested in the above mentioned subjects.

In 2013 we are going to provide a balanced mix of topics. At least one of the events will be hosted by a world class manufacturing company in Shanghai, including a factory walk and exchange with the top management. Another session will focus on the “Improvement Kata”. This set of routines, also known as “Toyota Kata”, is a helpful coaching-tool to manage people for improvement, adaptiveness and superior results. Beyond that, we will spend two events focusing on and discussing about topics out of the areas of supplier management excellence and logistics. If you are interested in a certain workshop related topic or if you are willing to actively support the group by providing interesting content, please let us know. Active participation is always appreciated.

About the Workshop:

Workshop Wirtschaftsjunioren | Young Leaders Shanghai provides a networking and learning platform for young professionals, entrepreneurs and managers, who are interested in developing their professional skills and broaden their personal knowledge and horizons. The aim is to mobilize young professionals in Shanghai to ACTIVELY engage in the community with activities in line with the three main workshop themes: entrepreneurship, business and culture. In 2012, the Wirtschaftsjunioren organized at least one event per month with different formats such as podium discussions, presentations, seminars, discussion groups, company site visits, excursions, and networking dinners.

The desired results of each Workshop depending on the chosen format of the particular event should be: • Actionable / valuable insights into the following topics: Entrepreneurship, Business and Culture • Meeting and learning from interesting personalities in the areas of Entrepreneurship, Business and Culture • Stronger network with likeminded and active members of the community

In 2013, we will focus more on interactive events where members will get the opportunity to participate, contribute directly and organize rather than only consuming information passively. Furthermore, we will look more into cooperations and partnerships with other organisations, such as young professional circles, universities and other non-profit organisations.

On the 24th of November 2012 the German Community in Shanghai prepared to celebrate the German Ball, its annual event highlight. For 15 consecutive years the German Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai has organized the Ball and invited its members, partners and friends to attend. The venue was once again the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Shanghai, the two ballrooms of which hosted more than 1000 guests. This year the ball’s theme was “Pure Elegance,” which set the tone for wardrobes, decoration and food. While gentlemen appeared in their black tuxedos, the ladies impressed with variously shaped and coloured gowns, each expressing his or her very own definition of elegance. They entered the premises through a long blue tunnel decorated with white lights and a white carpet with blue doves, which gave them their first glimpse of the Ball’s theme.

After enjoying the first welcome drinks and canapés in the foyer, the invitees were guided to their tables by ballet dancers draped in light chains, who showed the way into the darkened candle-lit ballrooms. In the Grand Ballroom Mr. Jan Noether, Managing Director GCC Shanghai, welcomed the guests and asked Dr. Wolfgang Roehr, Consul General of the German Consulate General in Shanghai, and his wife, Dr. Silvia Kettelhut, to open the Ball with a first waltz. In the Chrystal Ballroom, Mr. Titus von dem Bongart, Chairman of the Board GCC Shanghai, started the Ball with some welcoming words as well as a first waltz. From here on the night developed its own dynamic. Nobody needed much persuasion to hit the dance floor, which very quickly was filled with couples elegantly moving to the tunes of groups like the James Steiner Band, Princess Cut, Studio 188 and Rolf Becker and his orchestra. In his charming way, Mr. Felix Heimberg, the moderator of the evening, led the Ball attendees through the night’s programme. The talented Mr. Simon Ruf, Executive Sous Chef Grand Hyatt Shanghai worked with his team to create a wonderful buffet with a variety of delicacies, several live cooking stations and an entire room filled with desserts. In an excited mood, the guests followed the lead to the buffet again and again and again and again…

Apart from the food the only other break between dancing, singing and watching the shows was mingling in the champagne and cigar lounge, as well as

the refreshment at the midnight buffet. It was at midnight when the much anticipated lucky draw was executed by Dr. Kettelhut and Mr. Heimberg. Thanks to the generous sponsors, this year’s prizes included Lufthansa flights to Europe, weekend stays at renowned hotels – including the Hyatt on the Bund, the Kempinski Hotel Suzhou, The Longemont Shanghai, the Renaissance Yu Garden Hotel and the Wyndham Grand Plaza Royale Hangzhou – earphones from Sennheiser, a Nespresso coffee machine, beauty treatments from Apsara Spa and much more.

What began with preparations a year ago ended when the sun rose in the morning of the 25th of November 2012: the 15th German Ball. It wouldn’t have been such a success without all of its cheerful attendees and generous sponsors. Already marked on the agendas of Germans in Shanghai is the 16th German Ball, which will take place on 23rd of November 2013.
