Birthplace of the Chinese Civilization

Taiyuan City is the capital of Shanxi province with many historical and cultural

sites scattering around. For instance, the ancient city of Pingyao--one of the

world cultural heritages, Yungang grotto, Wutai mountains-holy land of

Buddhism, and so on. Nowadays, it is the center of politics, finance, culture

and international exchanges of Shanxi province. Taiyuan city is also an

important base for new products and boasts a sophisticated manufacturing

industry.

Well Connected and Easy to Get Around

Taiyuan is located in the central part of China near Beijing, Tianjin, and Xi’an,

It takes three hours by train and only fifty minutes by plane to go to Beijing.

The modern spatial transport network has been formed by the airline, railway

and highway, which makes traveling extremely convenient for tourists here.

hanxi University, found in 1902, is a university co-developed by the State

Ministry of Education and the People’s Government of Shanxi Province. Shanxi

university has inherited the glorious tradition of “Knowing the East and the West; seeking

goodness and truth; valuing virtue and talents; strengthening oneself and serving the

country” and promoted the school spirit of “being diligent, strict, honest and creative”.

The campus covers 174 hectares, with 1,100,000 square meters of office and classroom

space, and has two parts: a north part characterized by an elegant, traditional design, and a

southern one with stylish modern buildings. The university covers many disciplines and

12 academic fields, with 90 undergraduate specialties and 17 undergraduate

double-majors. There are 14 post-doc research sites, 15 PhD disciplines, 37 master’s

degree disciplines, and 13 engineering master’s degree disciplines.

The university has key State-level laboratories, Education Ministry laboratories, Education

Ministry humanities and social sciences research bases, and an Education Ministry

approved engineering research center, which provide the university a solid academic and

scientific research foundation. It also in charge of many nation’s 973 Projects; 863

Projects, and vital projects organized by the National Natural Science Foundation, as well

as the Social Science Foundation. Sixteen of the project results have won national awards,

including Natural Science award; Technological Innovation award; national Scientific and

Technological Progress award; Outstanding Achievement in the Humanities award from

the Education Ministry, a Social Sciences award for Chinese Higher Education

Institutions, and an Education Ministry Natural Science award.

Our Faculties

hanxi University is staffed by high-quality academic lecturers and has attained

remarkable achievements in cultivating skills. At present, Shanxi University has

2,026 full-time teachers, among whom 1,194 have obtained advanced academic

titles. There are professional lectures from Chinese Academy of Sciences, national

outstanding professional and technical talents, national model teachers, leading teachers

and experts in our university.

Campus Security

he safety of students and faculties is an important aspect in our university. We

have therefore funded a comprehensive upgrade of the facilities on the campus

to ensure safety. We have highly trained security guards patrolling our campus

24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Our aim is to guarantee everyone’s safety and comfort

day and night.

International Exchanges

he university has increasingly enlarged its international exchanges. It has

established intercollegiate relationships with over 50 universities and institutions

from the United States, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, France,

Germany, Canada and other countries. In addition, in November 2009, Shanxi University

collaborated with the Pfeiffer University of the United States and set up a Confucius

Institute. The establishment of the Confucius Institute has provided more opportunities for

international students to study in China.

Flexible Admission

If your Chinese proficiency failed to reach admission requirements of undergraduate and

graduate school in Shanxi University, you can first study Chinese language in the School

of International Education and Exchange, where offers special preparatory classes for

international students with different Chinese levels. Professional and experienced Chinese

teachers will help you master Chinese language as soon as possible. The faculty will assist

you to overcome all your language problems.

Programs for International Students

⚫ Degree-granting Programs: undergraduate, master’s and doctorate degree

⚫ Non-degree granting Programs (Short-term & long-term): Chinese Language and

Culture Study

⚫ Pre-university Programs: HSK Test Training

Undergraduate Programs: Students are required to complete the curriculum between 4-6

years and fulfill the designated number of credits. Successful graduates will receive a

graduation certificate along with the bachelor's degree, according to the regulation of the

Degree Committee.

Master's Programs: Students are required to complete the curriculum between 2-3 years,

fulfill the designated number of credits, complete the master's thesis and defend it in front

of a panel of experts. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate along with

the master's degree, according to the regulation of the Degree Committee.

Doctorate Programs: Students are required to complete the curriculum between 4-6 years

(in normal circumstances), fulfill the designated number of credits, conduct research,

complete the doctoral thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts. Successful

graduates will receive a graduation certificate with the doctoral degree, according to the

regulation of the Degree Committee.

Non-degree Programs: Students are required to master basic Chinese vocabulary and

grammar, to acquire the rudimental ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing; to

possess Chinese and cross-culture communication ability after a three-year systematic

study; to meet the general requirements of daily life, study and socialization. Successful

graduates will receive a graduation certificate granted by the School of International

Education and Exchange of Shanxi University. The faculty is staffed with experienced

teachers who have a high level of Chinese-teaching ability and decades of teaching

experience. We guarantee that the pass rate of New HSK Exams will be 90 percent even

for those students who know little about Chinese language.

Pre-University Programs: The option is available for those who want to complete

undergraduate, master’s or doctorate programs in colleges and universities. However, in

terms of Chinese language proficiency and cross-cultural communication, failing to meet

the basic standard influences students’ opportunity to be accepted by colleges and

universities. The curriculum should be completed in 1-2 years. This program mostly

focuses on the new HSK training, levels 4 through 6.

Application Prerequisites

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health, with valid passport, above the

age of 18, and should abide by Chinese laws as well as the regulations of Shanxi

University.

Undergraduate Programs: Applicants are required to have received a high school

graduation certificate; to have passed the new HSK level 4 Test if applied Chinese taught

program.

Master's Programs: Applicants are required to have attained a bachelor’s degree; to have

passed the new HSK level 5 Test if applied Chinese taught program.

Doctorate Programs: Applicants are required to have attained a master’s degree; to have

passed the new HSK level 5 Test if applied Chinese taught program.

Scholarships:

⚫ University Scholarship Type A

The scholarship covers all tuition and the accommodation fee, and provides an

amount of living allowance monthly. Applicants need to attend an interview

conducted by the University at the beginning of the semester. This scholarship will

be awarded every year after annual assessment of your performance.

*Stipend:

Undergraduate Programs： 7500CNY/Yr.

Master's Programs： 15000CNY/Yr.

Doctorate Programs： 20000CNY/Yr.

⚫ University Scholarship Type B

The scholarship covers all tuition and the accommodation fee. Applicants need to

attend an interview conducted by the University at the beginning of the semester.

This scholarship will be awarded every year after annual assessment of your

performance.

⚫ 2019 Short-term Program Scholarship for students study in any of these six majors:

Physics, Philosophy, Chemistry, Physical Education, Environment and Resources,

and Computer Science & Application for three-month in 2019.

The scholarship covers the accommodation, and provides 3000CNY of monthly

living allowance to each student. There is no tuition fee or application fee for

short-term programs. This scholarship is only available in 2019.

⚫ Chinese Government Scholarship

Bilateral Program

Bilateral Program includes a full or partial scholarship established by MOE in

accordance with educational exchange agreements or consensus between Chinese

government and governments of other countries, institutions, universities or

international organizations.

University Program

This is a full scholarship for designated Chinese universities and certain provincial

education offices in specific provinces or autonomous regions to recruit outstanding

international students in China. It only supports undergraduates, postgraduate

students and doctoral students.

CSC full scholarship covers: application, tuition, accommodation, Medical Insurance

with *Stipend:

42000CNY/year for doctoral,

36000 CNY/year for master

30000 CNY/year undergraduate students

Partial scholarship covers one or some items of the full scholarship.

⚫ China University of Petroleum (Beijing) Confucius Institutes Scholarship

for providing sponsorship to students, scholars and Chinese language teachers of

other countries for pursuing a study in relevant universities in China. This scholarship

covers application, tuition, accommodation, Medical Insurance with *Stipend:

2500CNY/year

⚫ Shanxi Government Scholarship

The scholarship is set up to sponsor the outstanding oversea students who apply for

Bachelor, Master and Doctor Degrees in Shanxi University. The Scholarship consists

of four types (Type A, Type B Type C). Covering tuition and accommodation fee with

*Stipend 25000RMB; covering tuition and accommodation fee with 20000RMB

allowance; covering tuition and accommodation fee with *Stipend 15000RMB.

The following documents should be presented to the International Students Office of

Shanxi University when registering: a. Certificate of Admission; b. Application Form

(JW202); c. Original Passport; d. There passport sized photos.

Accommodation Condition

Life on campus is very convenient. Campus includes hospital, post office, bank,

supermarket, barbershop and ATM nearby. The school dining hall provides different

flavored foods, such as fast food, local-featured food, baked goods and Muslim food. The

physical education facilities are also well-equipped; there are playgrounds for basketball,

volleyball, tennis and football. In the school gymnasium, badminton, table tennis and

fitness centers are available to use.

Accommodations provide you with internet access, colored TV, telephone, air

conditioner, restroom, bathroom, shared kitchen, laundry facilities and sports room, etc.

Medical Insurance

Shanxi University’s regulations require that all international students must be medically

insured throughout their entire planned period of study. Students are required to purchase

the Comprehensive Insurance Plan of Foreign Students provided by Ping An Insurance

Company on the day of registration, which has been recognized and recommended by the

Chinese Ministry of Education. Students who do not have valid medical insurance are

not allowed to register.

Visa Information

Students admitted to Shanxi University may apply for their visa at the Chinese

Embassy/Consulate in their country with their Certificate of Admission and JW202 form

(or Form V.2013 for X2-Visa).

International students who will study in China for over 6 months are required to obtain

X1-Visa, which will only be valid for 30 days after their arrival in China. They must go

to the International Students Office and apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days in

order to obtain legal status in China.
