Shaping Our Future / 9
OFFICE OF DIVERSITY AND SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENTThis spring, the Office of Diversity and Spiritual Development opened. Three student organizations were formed: the Diversity Club, the International Club and the Black Student Union Club.
WHY IS DIVERSITY IMPORTANT AT JUDSON UNIVERSITY?People are important to God. People are also important to our mission and the reason for the existence of Judson University. We educate people and teach them how to think critically, and creatively while being in community.
Diversity as a concept is reflective of God’s kingdom and is a part of the strategic mission and vision of Judson University. Diversity is not a problem to be solved and is not about being divisive in an organization. At Judson, diversity is mission critical. Demographic changes in the United States and the global nature of education demands that leveraging diversity be considered a core success strategy.
Our desire is to bring Judson University to a point of cultural competency at the end of 2020, where we are embracing the differences as a source of spiritual strength and as God sees it, since he created a majority of the diversity.
THE HONORS PROGRAMAcademically, current Honors students have taken a total of 590 credit hours of honors coursework from offerings in 11 different disciplines, and 10 seniors have submitted research project proposals for this semester. This year, the program added honors sequences for the majors in Art and Design. It continues to offer sequences in Architecture, Education, Math and Science. The university is working on a sequence for Psychology.
On the co-curricular side, The Honors Program continues to organize both the Constitution Day lecture series and Judson’s Student Research Day. In connection with the Constitution Day event. Honors students took their first study trip to Washington D.C., over spring break. Honors students commenced a “Lunch with a Professor” event to foster relationships between students and faculty outside the classroom, and a “Stress Relief Study Break” event bringing puppies to campus during exam week. The Honors Program is again providing the bulk of the student volunteers for the World Leaders Forum. The university is testing possibilities for Honors housing by offering incoming Honors students the opportunity to room with another Honors student.

Retention EffortsSTUDENT SUCCESS REFERRAL (EARLY ALERT) SYSTEMSince implementing the Student Success Referral System, Judson has the ability to provide a higher level of alert to retention issues at the institution. The new system has allowed university staff and administration to collaborate on student retention issues, identify solutions, meet student needs, and provide students with the knowledge of available campus resources.
IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW READING TOOLJudson purchased the Firefly/Kurzweil software, a powerful reading tool to help students with ADA accommodations, those who need extra study help, and for students where English is their second language. This software saves Judson the cost of having readers for students who require this accommodation. It allows the student to select the type of reader, the language, the speed, and how they want the material read (one sentence at a time or a paragraph at a time). Students can upload their books, articles, or papers to the site. They can also take notes on the site, and the site will outline their papers. Judson currently has 39 students who have signed up to use this service.

WELLNESS CENTER UNIFIED IN THE UNIVERSITY CENTER Judson University moved the Health Center and Counseling Center into one shared office space. Whole-person care is facilitated when care is offered all in one location. Combining the centers has allowed staff to better advocate for the needs of students as they deal with chronic and acute illnesses, along with mental health issues. Combining the offices is an asset as staff are able to recognize, provide for and coordinate the general physical and emotional health of the students in a timely matter to keep them on a path to wellness. Renovation to this space was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Cindy and David Hoag. Cindy is a trustee of Judson University and her father, Lynn Wheaton, worked for Judson’s Advancement Office.

CLUB LIST 2015-2016
STRATEGY CREATED FOR CLUBSNatalie Senatore, Judson’s director of Student Life, designed both a “Club” and “Special Interest Group” designation to address the needs of student organizations. Clubs can become funded and have higher requirements for involvement in JSO and campus life. Special interest groups can organize around topics or areas of interest and passion. Natalie also designed manuals for each type of grouping and implemented a new club application process, which was trialed over fall 2015. She has also streamlined the JSO campus event planning with club events as well as gave additional resources to small student organizations within the larger campus culture.
