CODESIGN STUDIO IS A GLOBAL LEADER IN PLACEMAKING AND ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S LEADING VOICES ON URBAN SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY.

CoDesign Studio (CoDesign) is a not-for-profit social enterprise with a mission to shape thriving neighbourhoods, for everyone. We are an award-winning placemaking, community engagement and planning consultancy with offices in Melbourne and Brisbane and were recently named as one the inaugural 2017 Westpac Businesses of Tomorrow.

Over the last six years, CoDesign has been leading a movement of change in urban development to drive solutions for social inclusion, connection and liveability. CoDesign is known for advancing innovative approaches to participatory design and placemaking which test and implement solutions for a range of public, private and not-for-profit clients.

CoDesign’s multi- disciplinary consultant team combines a unique skill set across community development, urban design, placemaking, community engagement and urban policy. This enables us to holistically look at place-based problems and help you innovate to find unique solutions and participatory processes that work.

THE POSITION:CEOPOSITION PURPOSEThe Chief-Executive-Officer (CEO) is a strong leadership role that presents the opportunity to build on six years of CoDesign’s industry experience and steer the organisation into it’s next chapter. CoDesign Studio has a solid track record of being an early adopter and innovator in the urban development and placemaking professions. In this context the CEO also plays a key industry thought leadership position in identifying trends and remaining at the cutting edge of innovation.

Reporting to the CoDesign Studio Board, the CEO is responsible and accountable for developing and delivering all approved CoDesign Strategic Plans, overseeing Business Development, representing and building the reputation and profile of CoDesign Studio within industry, and managing the external and internal operations of CoDesign Studio. The CEO will lead the staff team (currently 10FTE), and be assisted by a full-time Office Manager as well as our management team of two principal consultants.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTESThe essential knowledge, skills, and attributes of the appointee include proven:

> High level organisational and strategic planning, including the ability to draft and execute on a company wide strategic plan;

> Strong knowledge of industry trends in urban development in Australia and the ability to play a thought leadership role in identifying and demonstrating emerging innovation.

> An solid working knowledge of social entrepreneurship, and not-for-profit governance models.

> Demonstrated track record in business development including pro-actively identifying and closing pro-active opportunities.

> Capacity to lead in a complex and changing environment;

> High level leadership skills and organisational management experience, ideally with a knowledge of social enterprise;

> Change management capability > Ability to engage with team members

and create a strong organisational culture

> Financial acumen; > Facilitation and public speaking skills; > Verbal and written communication

skills; and > Ability to manage competing

demands with limited timeframes.

2. SENIOR BUSINESS MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE

> At least 10 years’ experience and proven success in business management, financial and staff performance and service quality with reporting responsibilities at Group Leader, Divisional or CEO level.

> At least 10 years’ experience in professional services in relevant client sectors with proven success in marketing, bidding, contract negotiations, technical delivery and management of complex client projects.

> Demonstrated approach to business and practice management that with proven track record in working in an inclusive, collaborative, supportive and decisive manner with a diverse client, staff and community context.

> Demonstrated Profit and Loss accountability and financial acumen.

> The ability to demonstrate proven industry, technical and management leadership and ability to build and nurture teams often including diverse cultures, age and differing levels of professional experience.

3. PROVEN TRACK RECORD IN INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP IN URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL INNOVATION

> An excellent industry reputation and holds high professional; standards, practical experience and solid reputation for success and quality service.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

> Actively contribute to conversations in the world about how to grow new solutions for thriving neighbourhoods.

> Start conversations, develop new ideas and lead thinking where our knowledge and experience is unique, and/or where there are gaps in our knowledge or expertise which might prevent us from having impact

2. STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT

> Within six months of appointment, developing and recommending to the Board a robust three-year business strategy including but not limited to financial, quality, marketing, staff and culture KPI’s.

> Developing and recommending to the Board a one year business plan and actions including performance against the strategy.

> Implementing and improving approaches to social impact including approaches to refining our types of projects, methodology and processes and tools.

3. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

> Oversee the development and delivery of the organisation’s business development strategy in line with the organisation’s strategic plan and annual plan.

> Lead the execution of the business development strategy including pro-

actively identifying and closing new work opportunities.

> Provide strategic direction to the organisation’s cores staff with regards to business development.

> Final accountability for all client business development and management, business pipeline development, proposals management, project execution and timely and profitable financial management of individual projects and the wider business

4. GENERAL ADMINISTRATION

> Day to day financial management of the practice and delivery of approved budget and operational plans.

> All required record keeping in accordance with all relevant statutory obligations and reporting requirements of not-for-profit.

> Debtor and supplier costs management and relationship management.

> Staff resource management, recruitment, day to day management of employee entitlements and planning for any staff bonus or incentive schemes and project workflow and project management.

5. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

> The sustainable financial management of the organisation and achievement of an agreed set of minimum business performance requirements of the business.

> Planning for, and executing the accurate and timely payment of all salaries, all required tax payments, office accommodation, all outgoings and any agreed professional service payments.

> Maintaining an awareness of the business, economic and political environment as it affects the organisation, clients and suppliers.

> Implementation of all agreed financial management protocols and the accurate monitoring of both financial and non-

financial performance of CoDesign Studio.

> With support from the finance manager, keeping accurate financial records and file an annual return with the details of all current Directors and the primary business address.

> With support from the finance manager, oversee the annual audit by an independent auditor

6. REPORTING

> Preparing and submitting to the Board a Monthly Board Report including financial and non-financial performance, budgets and financial statements, social impact performance, risk register update, client feedback, business development and marketing opportunities.

> Preparing and submitting annual reporting of social impact measures, in line with the indicators set out in the Social Traders contract.

> Prepare and submit all required accounting, financial and business reporting requirements to CoDesign accountancy and bookkeeping advisers to accord with requirements at law.

7. LEGAL, RISK AND COMPLIANCE

> Ensuring compliance with legal and all relevant regulatory obligations.

> Acting with care and diligence and working with integrity, honesty and proper purpose.

> Acting in good faith in the best interests of the company.

8. HUMAN RESOURCES

> Providing leadership for the staff team to enable them to understand the business objectives and values.

> Maintaining the staff culture and energy in line with business values.

> Maintaining a structure and reward system which supports the organisation’s achievements.

> Understanding and provide a framework for reporting requirements.

THE NITTY GRITTYSALARY AND INCENTIVESCEO base level salary is $120,000 plus super ($131,400 package), with the opportunity for bonuses and incentives to raise the package to $150,000+ based on organisational performance. CoDesign Studio operates as a not-for-profit social enterprise, staff are also eligible for salary packaging tax incentives.
