Shaping the European Dairy Landscape

hosted by Austrian Dairy Association (VÖM)

Welcome by Michel Nalet

President EDA

Dear colleagues and friends,

The 2019 edition of our EDA Annual Convention sails under the motto “Shaping the European Dairy Landscape”.

With a new European Parliament and a new European Commission that will take office in just a few weeks from now, the Brussels institutional set-up is completely renewed.

The historical landmark event of the Brexit has shaken the foundation of our Union.

In these times of political changes, we, the European dairy industry, we want to be at the forefront of the political debates for our sector and beyond:

“Shaping the European Dairy Landscape”

This is more than the title of our Annual Convention, this is a statement and a mission.

We convey our core message to the new European leadership: The success of the European dairy industry is based on the European project: a well-functioning Single Market, an ambitious European trade policy and our Common Agricultural Policy.

This is the baseline that defines our mission: voicing the importance of the dairy industry for the Union and advocating our common interests at Brussels level.

Our Annual Convention 2019 in Vienna is perfectly timed for sending out the message and for launching this ambitious mission:

“Shaping the European Dairy Landscape”

A heartfelt “Vergelt`s Gott” to our friends from our Austrian member Vereinigung Österreichischer Milchverarbeiter (VÖM) for hosting our Annual Convention in the prestigious Austrian capital and we are grateful to our member and friends, that have made our EDA congress over the past years THE platform of high level exchange and in-depth debate on milk and dairy in Europe and beyond.

Willkommen in Wien and Welcome to Vienna

Welcome by Helmut Petschar

President Austrian Dairy Association

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is a great pleasure that the Austrian Dairy Association (VÖM) has the honour to invite you to join the EDA-Congress 2019 in Vienna/Austria.

We welcome you all to this important annual conference when this year we will discuss

“Shaping the European Dairy Landscape”

The title “Shaping the European Dairy Landscape” has been chosen as a symbol of the uniqueness of dairying in mountainous and less favoured areas in Austria. This landscape is the basis of a natural and sustainable production and the high quality of Austrian dairy products, the landscape is also shaped and saved by the dairy production.

The title also stands for shaping of the political framework by the new elected European Parliament and the new European Commission which will be guiding for the European dairy industry. We will discuss this with the most influential representatives of politics, stakeholders, science and dairy industry and would like to bring forward the position of the dairy industry. The EDA congress 2019 will offer you an outstanding possibility to meet and discuss with representatives of Europe and the whole world.

Venue of the EDA congress is the “Imperial Riding School Vienna Renaissance Hotel”, located next to the city center of Vienna, combining history and modern conference facilities. The social program will include a welcome evening at a typical “Wiener Heurigen” in the outskirts of Vienna, a gala banquet in the historical ambience of the Palais Ferstel in the city center, a tour to Schönbrunn palace and a city tour with cultural and historical highlights of Vienna.

The Austrian Dairy Association wishes you a great stay in our capital and we hope you enjoy and actively participate in the convention.

A friendly welcome to Vienna

Welcome by Ludwig Rupp

President ASSIFONTE

Dear EDA & ASSIFONTE colleagues and liebe Freunde der VÖM,

What a pleasure to welcome all of you for the 2019 EDA/ASSIFONTE Annual Convention in Austria.

Austria has a quite unique “lactosphère”:

home to a vibrant and dynamic dairy industry with 86 traditional, but innovative milk processing companies, of which some are private dairies,

home to about 27.000 dairy farms committed to high quality and sustainable milk production. More than ¾ of our farms operate in mountainous areas, where the dairy sector really shapes our landscape,

home to dairy tradition: six Austrian cheeses are protected geographical indications under the EU Quality Policy, like our iconic Vorarlberger Bergkäse,

home to dairy innovation: our rather small dairies have an unique strength in developing new products in the “white” segment, but specially the “yellow” dairy category, where processed cheese takes a prominent position.

I am looking forward to meeting you during our EDA / ASSIFONTE Annual Congress in Vienna.

Ein herzliches Willkommen

Additional Information to note:

Thursday, 17 October 2019

14:00 – 17:30 Location: Imperial Riding School Renaissance Vienna Hotel

Our 2019 break-out sessions focus on two essentials topics for our dairy success in Europe & beyond:

In session 1, we will discuss “Sustainable dairy” where we will exchange on our ambition to give answer to the global challenges ahead and we will discuss what role the packing industry can play.

For our session 2, we focus on “The Global Dairy Market Intelligence Landscape – market outlooks and what they are based on” where we will get insight into the methodology of different actors – an unique opportunity to exchange with major dairy market analysts.

Moderator: Philippe Diercxsens (Danone, BE)

The very diverse reaction on our EDA Factsheet “Feeding the world with Dairy”, published in March 2019, showed that we touched very sensitive issues in that factsheet.

Still it is the science-based reality that dairy is part of the solution when it comes to feeding the world – and not only from a nutritional and health point of view.

On the basis of the latest scientific findings, we curved out the crucial role of dairy in the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity, in the global social development and in terms of sustainability.

The sessions´ chair & key note speakers, Philippe Diercxsens (Danone) and Prof. Jürgen König (University of Vienna) will outline in their keynote our approach with a focus on nutrition and sustainability.

The second part of this session will highlight the challenges we need to address in the area of packaging.

We are very happy to have Dr Jane Muncke (Food Packaging Forum, Zürich/Vetropack, CH), Daniel Lehner (ALPLA-Group, AT) and Dr Heike Schiffler (Tetra Pak, DE) to guide us through the options and solutions for our industry.

Moderator: Wim Kloosterboer, corporate manager trade & dairy affairs Royal Friesland Campina, chair of the EDA Trade & Economics Committee

With the Milk Market Observatory (MMO) of the European Commission, the dairy market outlook landscape has further evolved. The creation of the MMO is the clear sign of paradigm shift of the European authorities: with the market orientation of the dairy sector, in our globalized milk world the market observation and analysis has taken priority over market management.

“Market transparency” and an early indication of future market developments are crucial elements for limiting price volatility on our markets.

In times of volatile milk markets, in times of global trade instability and in times of political uncertainties, market analysis faces new challenges beyond weather and currency fluctuations.

Can market analytics still deliver a market outlook in this new environment?

In the set-up of a panel discussion, we want to get clear pictures on the market intelligence methodologies and the respective result on the market perspectives.

We are glad that Angelo Rossi (CLAL.it), a leader in global dairy intelligence, has accepted to share with us his insight in the key elements that will define the future of the dairy markets. Angelo is also ready to discuss with us the specific CLAL.it background of his market intelligence.

Prof. Marin Bozic (dairymarkets.org) has a key role in the U.S. dairy sector when it comes to analysing dairy markets and dairy policies. Marin will share his perspective on the future dairy markets and outline the basis for his assessments.

With Prof. Holger D. Thiele (ife-institute) we have an outstanding dairy economist on the panel who has developed different (milk) price methodologies.

As global milk exporter n°1 and with an ever-increasing share of our milk and dairy that is enjoyed outside the Union, the expectations of the global markets on our sector will be important elements that shape the EU dairy landscape. The international trade environment will be a decisive factor when in comes to fully uncork our EU dairy potential.

We are honoured that H.E. Dr David Walker, NZ Permanent Representative at WTO in Geneva, has accepted our invitation to talk to us on the developments on the international trade arena and its impact on global and EU dairy. Dr David Walker has an outstanding expertise and experience, not only at multilateral level, but also as a master mind in the development of NZ trade strategy and its implementation.

Milk is the most nutritious food with an unique blend of highest value macro- and micronutrients, milk and dairy is as much part of our traditional culinary heritage as of a modern lifestyle. With its unrivalled nutritious qualities, milk and dairy has also an environmental profile, that further improved at European and global level.

How to keep milk and dairy reputation in the consumers’ mind and how to lift up the dairy categories that have not fully uncorked their potential on the European markets?

Dr Michael Blass is director of AMA Marketing GmbH a benchmark when it comes to generic milk promotion basically all over Europe. The AMA-Marketing managed to develope a very positive image für Austrian milk products.

Dr Jaap Petraeus, corporate sustainability manager at Friesland Campina, will update us on the latest developments at world level when it comes to the global sustainability approach of our sector. As a key driver in both, the DSF (Dairy Sustainability Framework) and the SIA (Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform) Jaap will focus on the B2B model and its benefits to our sector, both in terms of a pre-competitive, sectorial approach towards our clients and in terms of driving the global dairy community towards a higher sustainability level.

With Boyan Neytchev (groupe BEL) we will get a first-hand insight into the corporate perspective of the positioning of a high value brand across Europe and the world. Boyan will focus on the specific positioning of dairy in Central Europe and our eastern neighbourhood.

When discussing where to position milk and dairy in todays’ consumer world, the retailer perspective is of as much importance as in the B2B arena. An insight into the retailers’ perception of milk and dairy will be developed by Dr Andreas Steidl (REWE Austria).
