Constable Care entertains and educates almost 100,000 primary school aged children each year. A team of professional actors address a range of personal safety, community safety and citizenship themes utilising puppet shows for ages 3-8 and interactive plays for ages 9-13.

Each show is developed in consultation with experts in education, child safety and harm prevention, and shows cover a diverse range of themes including cultural diversity and understanding, protective behaviours, road safety, and violence. Every program is supported by a teacher resource pack and evaluation kit to support our performances and ensure retention of the safety messages. During 2016 Constable Care worked with nearly 65,000 students in metro Primary and Secondary Schools, and more than 18,000 students in regional and remote school communities.

In addition to school incursions, the Constable Care team is present at more than 80 community events a year, performing shows and reinforcing safety messages. The Constable Care brand and character is well known, much loved and viewed fondly as part of growing up in WA.

Peer pressure at school and online is greater now for young West Australians than it has ever been. Dealing with issues such as bullying, alcohol and other drugs, relationship violence and feelings of depression and isolation can be an enormous challenge for many teenagers. Often there is no outlet available to discuss the feelings they experience, nor any way for them to collectively explore solutions with their peers to deal with problems.

Theatrical Response Group (TRG) was launched in 2014 in order to empower young people to explore and resolve real-world issues through the safe medium of theatre. The TRG education program uses interactive ‘Forum Theatre’ techniques to transform students from passive spectators into active participants, or ‘spect-actors’. Students are encouraged to use facilitated role play to explore real-world scenarios and develop strategies for dealing with social issues and health pressures that affect their day-to-day lives. The program fosters resilience and encourages young people to speak up and confidently enter into conversations about issues that concern them.

During 2017, TRG will work with more than 3,500 secondary students, helping them to find their own solutions to difficult community issues including bullying, violence and drug use.

Launched in 2015 with funding from WA Department of the Attorney General Criminal Property Confiscation Grants Program, Lotterywest and WA Police, Your Call uses the familiar ‘choose your own adventure’ concept. Hugely popular as interactive books in the early 1980’s, the Your Call series reimagines this engaging approach as interactive films for a new online audience of young people.

Focusing on youth issues such as alcohol abuse, violence, crime prevention and mental health, each film is designed to be an immersive short story that allows the viewer, as the point of view participant, to make decisions throughout that change the way the story unfolds and ultimately the ending. Video annotations technology is used to create seamless transitions from decision to decision, with the aim being to deliver a continuous and uninterrupted sense of story. Seeing what would have happened if you’d done something differently is a key aspect of these films, with each video designed to allow the viewer to go back through the story and make different decisions to see the effect.

There are already four films in the series, #emilywasted which addresses the concept of alcohol abuse, Shirtfront which tackles violence, Wreck which explores the choices around car theft and crime and the newly released Pressure, which tackles peer pressure, mental health and drug abuse.

Pressure was developed as part of our 2016 inaugural schools competition, which gave secondary students the opportunity to have their voices heard on youth mental

health. The competition will continue this year, in partnership with WA Police, nib foundation and the WA Lions Drug Education Foundation.

When a child is a victim of crime, neglect or involved in a traumatic situation such as a road accident, they often cannot go home to a safe environment. To care for these children, the Constable Care Child Safety Foundation provide a Comfort Pack, presenting them with essential items such as pyjamas, blanket, underwear, toothbrush and paste, soap, hair care, teddy bear, and story book all packaged up in a useful backpack. Comfort packs are gender specific and assembled for various ages (e.g. toddler, pre-schooler, child, youth). These packs provide each child in distress with a sense of control while providing comfort and restoring dignity.

Constable Care provides these packs to front-line caregivers and emergency service workers to make life a little more comfortable for these kids at a really difficult time. Teams that use this service include The Child Abuse Task Force, Child Abuse Interview Unit, Major Crash Unit, Domestic Violence Teams and Social Workers. The caregivers use the comfort packs not only as a way to provide immediate practical care, but also to build trust, rapport and to establish a communication pathway in order to help the child.

The program relies entirely on donations and sponsorship and its contents are packed by volunteer staff. Should you wish to donate your time or financially support the program, contact [email protected] or call 08 9272 0000.

Every parent’s worst nightmare is to lose sight of their child at an event where there are thousands of people, with no visibility through the crowd and so much background noise that the child’s voice cannot be heard.

Constable Care’s Lost Child Service provides resourced Family Meeting Points and Child Safety Stops at prominent locations around events such as entrance gates and near popular family attractions. Constable Care Safety Stops act as a meeting place, safe refuge for lost children and a point where parents can collect a free Constable Care Child Identification Sticker in case of an emergency.

Every event is unique and as a result we provide tailored quotes that best suit the needs of event organisers. In every instance pricing is kept to a minimum so as to ensure this critical safety service is utilised by as many community and large-scale events as possible.

Creating safer event environments, reducing risk for event operators and increasing community safety is the Foundation’s priority. To request a quote for your next event, email us at [email protected] or phone 08 9272 0000.

Few people realise that not only does WA have the highest state road toll in Australia per capita, tragically our children make up a disproportionate number of these deaths when compared to other states and territories. There is an urgent need for early education programs that can reduce these unacceptably high figures.

Based on the best-practice education principles of learning through play and simulation, The Foundation has embarked on the construction and operation of WA’s only safety experiential learning centre, where children aged 4-11 years will practice road and public transport safety skills in a realistic urban environment that links the classroom road safety curriculum to practical skills training.

The Safety School recreates Perth’s streets including scale buildings, working rail platform and crossings, traffic lights and intersections, school zones, trains and buses, with every scenario likely to be encountered by a child represented onsite.
