Lesson Objective Students will be able to identify the political and historic causes of the Persian Wars

Lesson Description This is an introductory lesson about the Persian Wars. It is student-driven, as opposed to the traditional lecture-style introduction. First, the students review military vocabulary which will likely be familiar to them. Then, students become military strategists and analyze an overview of the Persian Wars. They read, annotate, and complete a graphic organizer. After, students share out to create a complete set of notes from the Greek and Persian perspectives. Last, students answer higher-level follow-up questions.

Common Core State Standard

Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.

Before and After This lesson provides students the opportunity to explore causation in a meaningful and rigorous way. Before this lesson, students will know little about the Persian Wars and may or may not have studied any other ancient wars. After, students will be able to explain why this war took place. It is the first lesson in a three day sequence which will examine the causes, course, and consequences of the Persian Wars.

Topic Background The Persian Wars are documented in The Histories by Herodotus. You can find the full text online at http://classics.mit.edu/Herodotus/history.html
