IntroductionYou have explored the SharePoint Designer environment and you are now ready to create andstructure a subsite. In this lesson, you will create a subsite and design a layout for it.

It might be confusing for users to work on a SharePoint site if all the departments in the com-pany were to use the same site for collaboration and interaction. Having a site for eachdepartment in an organization enables collaboration and makes interaction with your colleaguesmore efficient and streamlined.

TOPIC ACreate a Blank SubsiteIn this lesson, you will create your own SharePoint site. The rst step is to create a blank subsite object that you can later customize and populate with content. In this topic, you willcreate a subsite.

The need for subsites is mostly felt in real world situations, where there would be a top-levelsite and numerous subsites. For example, a company might have a top-level site that caters tothe needs of the entire organization and numerous subsites that cater to the different depart-ments in the company. Creating subsites might be vital to meet the needs of the organizationbecause creating just one site might clutter the site and make for its poor usability.

Site CollectionsA site collection is a collection of websites on a web server. Each site collection consists of atop-level site and one or more subsites. The top-level site is the main site where administratorsettings for a site collection are changed. The subsite is a website that is stored inside a top-

level site. Both the top-level site and subsites can contain subsites, lists, documents, discussions, and surveys.

Administrator Settings for a SubsiteBy default, all subsites in a site collection will have the same administrator settings asthe top-level site. However, you can change the administrator settings for each of thesubsites, independent of the permissions of the top-level site.

Types of Web PagesThere are different types of web pages that help you to display information on thewebsite. Web pages differ from each other based on their scripting languages. Some of the commonly used types of web pages are ASP, HTML, and CSS.

Type of Web Page DescriptionASP Active Server Pages (ASP) is based on a set

of HTML code designed to supportinteractivity on a web page.
