A NEWSLETTER FOR MEMBERS & FRIENDS OF MOUNT OLIVET LUTHERAN CHURCHBelieving, Belonging, Becoming

OUNT OLIVET LUTHERAN CHURCH APRIL 2015VOLUME 3, ISSUE 4

Pastor John D. Hogenson, Senior Pastor

We begin our Holy Week on Palm Sunday, fi nding ourselves as participants in the story, shouting, “Hosanna in the highest” and very soon shouting, “Crucify him!” We are fortunate at Mount Olivet to be able to walk through the Holy Week and enter the story, experience the passion, and celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior.

Th roughout it all, we realize our need for a Savior and Redeemer, rejoicing on Easter that through the life, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, we are freed from sin and death and experience new life here on earth and in the life to come.

If Lent is a time for refl ection, then Easter is truly a time of rejoicing. As a congregation, we celebrate seven Sundays of Easter before our next season, the Pentecost. During these seven Sundays of Easter, we will focus on the proclamation and how our lives are transformed by the Easter good news. We are called to not only hear the good news, but share it with our friends and neighbors.

Over the next 50 days, I invite you to join me in extending an invitation to others to hear this good news on Easter Sunday and then again on the Sundays that follow. Invite friends to join you in fellowship as we connect to our community through many outstanding programs this month, from leadership dinners and lunches to Bible studies, invite others to connect more fully with God.

“Go in peace. Share the good news!”

Palm Sunday Sun 3/29MPLS 9, 10, 11am & 12noonWEST 9, 10 & 11amTh e festive palm processional honors and reenacts the triumphant journey of Jesus into Jerusalem. Jesus entered through the golden gate where tradition says the Messiah will enter Jerusalem. From the book of Matthew we read that the people spread their cloaks on the road, and then cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road as well. It was the children of the city who began shouting “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” Th e people asked, “Who is this?” Th e crowd with Jesus replied,“Th is is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.” After the processional, Jesus immediately went to the temple and began teaching.

Devotions

So the machetes made me a little nervous!

“Th ere is no permutation of humanity in which Christ is not present. If every bible is lost, if every church crumbles to dust, if the last believer in the last prayer opens her eyes and lets it all fi nally go, Christ will appear on this earth as calmly and casually as he appeared to the disciples walking to Emmaus after his death …” *

Th e Mount Olivet Guatemalan Missionaries had fi nally arrived in the jungle. Indigenous folk with big brown eyes and deeply tanned skin were graciously holding our hands, helping us into a hand-carved boat to travel down the Rio Negro to the villages. When I looked down I saw that two of the local pastors who were accompanying us had machetes sheathed to their pack.

So as not to alarm the group, I asked in Spanish: “Why are you carrying knives?” She smiled and said in English, “You never know.”

Here’s what we learned in the midst of the jungle: You never DO know what surprises God has in store for his children. In the midst of these remote, primitive villages, in the absence of electricity or running water or any semblance of a modern convenience, God is present. Big time. Th ere aren’t enough boats in the country to contain the inspiring, tangible, authentic, ever-present faith of these simple, humble children of God. Th ank you, God, for their witness, to us. – PAstOR HAMMeRsten

WEST 11am Children’s Service, 6pm Communion Service, 7pm Tenebrae Service.“Tenebrae” is Latin for shadows. Th e purpose of this service (7pm at Mpls and West) is to recreate the betrayal, abandonment, and agony of the events of Holy Week. After each reading, a candle is extinguished, eventually leaving the sanctuary in total darkness. Th is worship service is left unfi nished because the story is not complete until Easter Sunday.

10 | MOUNT OLIVET MESSENGER

1. “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” It’s not surprising that the fi rst of Jesus’s last words on the cross were a plea for forgiveness to those who cursed, spat, and nailed him to the cross. He asks God to forgive both these people and the people of the world because “they don’t know

what they’re doing.” Jesus is proclaiming through these words that the sins of the world will be washed away and we may have eternal life through God. It’s impossible for us to have the same incredible compassion Jesus had in our own lives. However, we can make a conscious eff ort daily to show compassion the way Jesus did. Th ese acts don’t have to be anything extraordinary. A simple thank you or smile can go a long way in spreading the joy and love of Jesus. In my life these words help me understand that even though you may be enduring struggles someone will always appreciate your compassion more than you can even imagine. – evAn ALtenBURG

2. “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Jesus is speaking these words to the criminal he is being crucifi ed with, and they are truly refl ective of His forgiveness and graciousness. Th is criminal has messed up in life, and Jesus is personally inviting him into Heaven. I fi nd

comfort in this because it reminds me that no matter what I’ve done, I can fi nd forgiveness and acceptance with my Heavenly Father. We are all imperfect sinners, and yet God continues to forgive us and love us. I love thinking about that, because I realize that despite anything that is happening in my life, I can always turn to God for help and comfort. I know that Jesus is always there for me, and I rely on him in both trials and celebrations. – sAMAntHA nIcKLAUs

3. “Behold your son: behold your mother.” Jesus put his mother Mary into the care of “the disciple he loved” so Mary could take care of him, and he could take care of Mary after Jesus died. We are reminded that as Jesus was dying on the cross to save us all from our sins he was also a son whose mother

loved him very much. Even in Jesus’ last moments he shows us the abundance of love he has for us by placing his mother Mary into the care of “the disciple he loved.” I feel that this statement shows that in our lives we need to love each other and make sure that everyone is being taken care of. No matter what is going on in life we all need to show our love and compassion for each other as Jesus did for Mary and “the disciple he loved” while he was dying on the cross. – PAIGe HUsKeY

4. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Th e end of Jesus’s life came very fast. Th e fourth word is when Jesus was on his last few dying breaths. He was alone with no one to comfort him. Th is shows Jesus as human and the betrayal he felt. To me this word means that even when we feel

total abandonment we will never truly be alone. Jesus knows that we will feel far from him and maybe even miles from his presence, but even if you feel that way, God will always be right by your side. God will travel deserts and seas to be at your side because he loves you as his own. – MARK IWen

5. “I thirst.” During his crucifi xion, Christ was closest to all of humanity when he uttered “I thirst.” Th is small phrase shows his similarities to the people he died for on the cross. He was thirsty just like the rest of them. Not only was Jesus asking for water, he was asking for his suff ering to end. He knew his death

was looming. Like Jesus, we all thirst. We thirst for righteousness and for forgiveness. I thirst for a better relationship with Christ. I thirst for the forgiveness that Jesus died on the cross for. Th rough his last wish, Christ represented the thirsts that all of the Lord’s children have. – FIOnA eUe

6. “It is fi nished.” As Jesus cried on the cross “It is fi nished” he depicted the message that his job here on earth was complete. God brought us Jesus as a son, to set the example to his future sons and daughters. I believe that God has created each and every one of us for the better – he has given each of us a unique skill-

set to share. Th rough creating sons and daughters, God pours out his love through us and shows that he will love us forever. Once your time on earth is fi nished, “It is fi nished,” and you will gladly be received to the Kingdom of God. – PAtRIcK McGIntY

7. “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Th e fi nal statement of Jesus on the cross shows that Jesus is human and has fears just as we do, but continues to have faith in his father and knows that he will be safe with him in heaven. To me this statement means that God has a plan for me, that I

can give all my worries and anxieties to him. When I am feeling unsure of things, I can pray that he will give me strength and that when I die, my spirit will be with him in heaven. Th is is comforting because it’s reassurance that even as Jesus was on the cross he knew that God had a plan for him and that he didn’t have to worry. Just as I don’t need to worry about the little bumps along the road, because God has a clear path for me. – MIKKA scHAcHeReR

A well-thought-out estate plan makes it easier for your family, avoids disputes, and ensures that your wishes are followed. You are invited to attend this special seminar where estate planning attorney STUART BEAR will give a presentation titled, “Th e Th ree-Step Estate Planning Process,” followed by a time for questions and answers. Are you in this group? Having an up-to-

easter Prospectus: investing long-termBut in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the fi rst fruits of those who have died … Christ the fi rst fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. – I cORIntHIAns 15: 20-23

Th e glorious good news of Christ’s resurrection from the dead changes everything, most of all one’s perspective. Th at Christ has been raised from the dead, and that you and I will one day be raised with him, empowers our planning beyond day-to-day matters which often present as urgent, to agendas and opportunities which are eternal!

A successful business person came to a renewed faith in Jesus Christ. Asked to share what diff erence this made in his view of life, particularly management and investment of his (considerable) assets, he revealed the parameters of his prospectus with clear and compelling eloquence. Speaking before a mixed group of business folks – believers, non-believers, and others who claimed to be “spiritual, but not religious”– he said, “Here’s the value proposition: God is on your side. Th e future is taken care of. So you are free to serve and share in things that are eternal.”

Our Mount Olivet Lutheran Church is making an increasing investment in the future. We do this though providing faith-enhancing opportunities for children and young adults; providing programs and services that enhance our spirit of believing, belonging, and becoming; and by tending to our dear older saints and others who already are seeing glimpses of the life to come. In other words, our vision for mission embraces an eternal perspective while off ering us opportunities to plan and provide with an Easter prospectus.

As we prayerfully plan for and provide an increasing proportion of our assets in support of Mount Olivet’s vision for mission, we are eff ectively increasing our investment allocation as an eternal, unending asset. One day you and I will know the eternal impact of our generosity. In the meantime, we get to smile securely with this Easter perspective:

God is on your side.Th e future is taken care of.So you are free to serve and share in things that are eternal.
