DISCOVERY OF HIV

HIV WAS DISCOVERD IN JUNE 1981 AMONG GAY MEN IN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA U.S.A. (source: CDC)

About 39 million people have died of HIV since the epidemic. (source: WHO 2013, CDC)

Approx. 36.9 million people are living with HIV and AIDS 34.5 million of which are Adults and 2.6million are Children (<15yrs)(source: WHO, 2014)

>2.5million gets infected with HIV every year globally ,>2.0million are infected with HIV in 2014 adults: 1.8millionchildren (<15yrs 220,000) (source: WHO, 2014)

Nearly 1.7million people die of HIV each year.1.2million people died of HIV at the end of 2014150,000 are children <15yrs

HIV /AIDS is really reducing the world population more than anything else the world has recorded.

Sub-Sahara Africa bears the biggest burden of HIV. Followed by Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Latin America (source: WHO, CDC)

Sad to say: Tanzania has lost 7% of the population due to HIV and AIDS (source: CDC)

Zambia has lost 12% of its population due to HIV and AIDS ( source: CDC)

Sub-Saharan Africa is the most affected region, with 25.8 [24.0–28.7] million people living with HIV in 2014. Also sub-Saharan Africa accounts for almost 70% of the global total of new HIV infections (source: WHO, 2014)

The QUESTION is, why Sub- Saharan African is the most affected region?

As a public health consultant, so many things need to be considered in dealing with this disease among Africa nations.

>Every 5.8 seconds, a person is newly-infected with HIV (source: WHO)> Every 10.5 seconds, someone dies of AIDS (source: WHO)

Condom use remains the easiest way to protect yourself against HIV /AIDS (source: CDC, WHO)
