Patients of note included a Mountain Patchnose Snake, a Golden Eagle, a Yellow-rumped Warbler, and a Macgillivray’s Warbler, among many others. We have seen a more than 25% increase in admissions for these first six months of 2020 compared to 2019. As of today, June 29, we have 117 patients in-care. Interns are required to fulfill a skills checklist and attend weekly classes, in addition to learning the daily animal care and treatments. This is an area of future growth potential for us as well, as we hope to add a seasonal staff person and up to six interns annually. Dr. Sirica and Dr. Breer were the primary medical staff for all patients treated in the hospital, overseeing their diagnosis and treatment protocols. Dr. Sirica performed surgeries as warranted, mostly to repair clean fractures. Both veterinarians treated animals both onsite and in their clinics and were on call for consultation with our staff nearly 24/7. Dr. Kathleen Ramsay has also assisted with some surgical procedures. Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital

In the period from January 1, 2020 to June 28, 2020, New Mexico Wildlife Center admitted 446

animals to our wildlife rehabilitation hospital. Patients of note included a Mountain Patchnose

Snake, a Golden Eagle, a Yellow-rumped Warbler, and a Macgillivray’s Warbler, among many

others. We have seen a more than 25% increase in admissions for these first six months of 2020 compared to 2019. As of today, June 29, we have 117 patients in-care. See below for a

complete list of species, date admitted, reason for admission, and disposition.

Our Hospital was staffed by two full-time Certified Wildlife Rehabilitators, Haley Sharpe and

Hilary DeVries. They supervised volunteers in the program throughout the 6 months, as well as

four summer interns. The intern program has grown with many applicants this year. Interns are

required to fulfill a skills checklist and attend weekly classes, in addition to learning the daily

animal care and treatments. This is an area of future growth potential for us as well, as we

hope to add a seasonal staff person and up to six interns annually.

The staff were supported by two professional veterinarians, Dr. Sarah Sirica (Thaw Veterinary

Clinic, Santa Fe) and Dr. Julie Breer (Smith Veterinary Hospital, Santa Fe). Dr. Sirica and Dr.

Breer were the primary medical staff for all patients treated in the hospital, overseeing their

diagnosis and treatment protocols. Dr. Sirica performed surgeries as warranted, mostly to

repair clean fractures. Both veterinarians treated animals both onsite and in their clinics and

were on call for consultation with our staff nearly 24/7. Dr. Kathleen Ramsay has also assisted

with some surgical procedures.

Two of our staff and one of our veterinarians attended the National Wildlife Rehabilitators’

Association Annual Symposium in late February. Both Wildlife Rehabilitator Haley and Executive

Director Melissa presented to attendees on topics related to administration and wildlife care.

As Dr. Sirica has recently taken an internship at the Wildlife Center of Virginia, we will be having

two other veterinarians from the Albuquerque area step in for her until Dr. Sirica’s return. This

is our third year of using an online database, Wildlife Rehabilitation MD (WRMD), and we have

seen great benefits from this database with respect to our record-keeping and ability to analyze

data. WRMD also allows us to share medical records easily when animals are transferred to

other centers and rehabilitators who use the system (and many in New Mexico do), although

we feel it is still under-utilized in our state for this purpose.

We have fielded a tremendous number of phone calls this year, helping people with wildlife-

related issues and answering questions. Our staff is trained to screen potential rescuers and

assist them with problem-solving, especially when it comes to young, “orphaned” wildlife. We

make every attempt to have the youngsters reunited with their natural parents before inviting

rescuers to bring the animals to our hospital. While we have been fairly successful, there are

often difficulties; one incident with a nest of four nestling kestrels is an example. After reuniting

them with their parents in a replacement nest (their nest tree had been cut down), the babies

were all found dead the following day, likely due to accidentally being fed environmental

poisons.

This year’s coronavirus pandemic has affected our hospital with increased admissions. In the

month of April, admissions were actually down when compared to the same time period in

2019. However, May and June have more than made up for that brief decrease, and we are on

track to care for about 25% more patients in this calendar year versus last year.

Wildlife & Science Education

In the period from January 1, 2020 to March 17, 2020, New Mexico Wildlife Center staff and

volunteers presented 37 in-person, wildlife education programs (including meet & greet events)

to approximately 1,609 children and adults in New Mexico. The vast majority of these were for

school-aged children, but we presented a few programs for adult and mixed groups as well. We

had many in-person programs scheduled for March through June as well, but the coronavirus

pandemic put a temporary halt to our in-person education efforts. (Please see the below list of

programs.)

Instead, our education team pivoted towards online education through virtual visits, social

media channels, and our website. In spite of slow internet speeds creating some issues, we

have still been able to reach a large number of people with our message of wildlife and habitat

conservation. We obtained new equipment that has allowed us to improve the quality of our

videos and plan to continue to incorporate online learning, even after schools and other groups

are accessible for in-person visits. Note that the below list of programs has three parts, one for

in-person visits, one for virtual visits, and one for social media education.

All of our wildlife education programs raise awareness about the value and importance of

wildlife and ways of conserving both wildlife and their habitats. Additionally, they foster this

connection to wildlife and nature that empowers and encourages people to take action to help

wildlife and to simply enjoy the outdoors. We had support this school year from the Santa Fe

Rotary Club to complete seven Caring Kids: Wings and Paws programs. These four-visit

programs are done in partnership with the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and teach empathy, respect

for the environment, responsibility, and safety around animals to primarily fourth-grade

students in the Santa Fe area. We completed three of these during the early part of 2020.

The Animal Ambassadors participating in our wildlife education programs are housed on-site at

New Mexico Wildlife Center and provide an educational opportunity for visitors to the center.

In early 2020, approximately 350 people came through NMWC to complete the self-guided tour

of our Ambassador Animal displays, prior to our closure on March 17, 2020. We also hosted a

few Saturday Speaker Series programs onsite in early 2020. These programs were gaining

popularity, but had to be suspended in mid-March due to the pandemic. We may bring them

back in a virtual format in the coming months.

We are just getting ready to launch our virtual summer camps in July 2020. This new format is a

response to the current pandemic and promises to increase our reach beyond just New Mexico

students.

River Classroom has been put on hold for the current calendar year. We are re-visiting the

curriculum and hope to re-tool it for the coming school year.

During 2020, NMWC acquired one new Animal Ambassador for use in wildlife education

programs and display at the Center; a male Prairie Falcon. He has already been a tremendous

asset in programming as he is a former falconry bird and very calm in front of audiences (and

cameras). We have also lost two of our ambassador animals in early 2020, one to presumed old

age complications, and one was euthanized due to advancing joint degeneration and pain.

NMWC Education Animal Curator, Shawna Protze, is responsible for the daily husbandry of

these animals. Shawna is a licensed falconer and trains our Animal Ambassadors with the

assistance of two other Education Staff members, Executive Director Melissa, and a number of

volunteers.

Two members of our education team left NMWC early this year. We are excited to welcome

two new, very talented educators to our team, Jessica Schlarbaum and Chase Spearing. Jessica

holds a Master’s degree in Avian Science and comes to us from California Raptor Center where

she has worked with raptors in education, rehabilitation, and field research. Chase was

recently a veterinary technician and previously worked as Education Coordinator at Wildlife

Images and Education in Grants Pass, Oregon. Both bring tremendous experience and

unmatched enthusiasm to NMWC.
