Shared Beat is a 501 (c)(3) volunteer organization. Our mission is to empower children and their families through health and wellness care and education so they can achieve self reliance and a positive future.

Thanks to your actions of support in 2013, Shared Beat provided the following services in the communities we serve:

Medical Program

Shared Beat operates a full-time clinic at Camino Seguro in Guatemala City reaching 100 patients per week. Clinic support includes year-round medications, supplies, a full-time nurse & Coordinator- Claudia Yol, and a part-time physician–Wuelington Cabrera. Throughout the year, an Emergency fund is available for Camino Seguro students. In bi-annual Medical Outreach clinics, 47 Shared Beat volunteers from Guatemala & 10 states cared for 2600 people, providing 3100 prescriptions. Thanks to a grant from the Joan Brack Foundation, we were able to provide fluoride for 1500 students in both July 2013 and in February 2014.

Scholarship Program Seven students received healthcare scholarships from Shared Beat in 2013. Three women graduated: Maira Gonzalez from the high school, Astrid Pop from Pre-University, and Flor Pineda Son from Nurses Aid training. In 2014, 11 students will receive healthcare scholarships. Education Program

Shared Beat provided support for a full-time Health Educator for 600 students comprised of 550 children and 50 adults, in the Guatemala City dump project of Camino Seguro. A big thanks to Health Promoter and Scholarship student Maira Gonzalez for taking on health classes full-time the first part of the year until volunteer Ada Reso took on the position in July. Maira continues to teach, assist in the clinic and continue her studies in nursing.

Vitamin & Parasite Prevention Program

Daily vitamins reached 4800 children, pregnant women and seniors in 22 Guatemalan communities. Bi-annual parasite prevention was provided for 4600 children & adults.

Vision Program

650 students received annual vision screens. Prescription & reading glasses were provided for 318 students & adults. Thank you Mark Bisett for taking on the role as our Vision Program Director! Our new Vision Specialty Team– Mark Bisett, Bryan Berkenkamp, Gina Bisett, Wright Hartsell, Steve Rode & Karen Sites.
