According to USDA’s 2017 Ag Census, women were key decision-makers on 56% of all U.S. farms, up 27% compared with the 2012 Ag Census. Female-operated farms accounted for 51% of the sales of livestock products, including dairy. Most female producers operate farms that have more than one producer, but USDA reports that 13% operated farms on which they were the only producer. Universities report a rising percentage of women pursuing large animal veterinary careers as well as other animal science and support roles throughout the industry. Women are vital in next generation transfers and bridging gaps by forging bonds with consumers. The Udder Comfort team is pleased to celebrate November Women-in-Dairy Month and appreciate participating among showcase vendors in the Dairy Girl Network biennial Forward TogetHER national conference, a 2020 Wisconsin-based virtual format after 2018 in Pennsylvania and 2016 in Minnesota. On the frontlines and behind the scenes, dairywomen are instrumental longstanding partners and leaders on dairy farms and among industry leaders in animal care, health, genetics, nutrition, technology and business management. Many work off-farm jobs in addition to on-farm responsibilities. They host farm tours and communicate with consumers. They are dairy princesses and ambassadors promoting dairy goodness. They are professionals in varied supporting areas. They are communicators, sharing images and stories about farm life with urban peers. They know a comfortable cow is a profitable cow. Dairywomen like Karen, Jeni, Candice and Erica tell us why they value Udder Comfort to start every fresh lactation. “This is all I ever wanted to do,” says Karen Hawbaker, Warm Spring Dairy, Chambersburg, Pa. about seeing her 160 cows reach their potential producing quality milk, she attributes to the basics. “We don’t have a lot of cows with issues. Udder Comfort is a part of that,” she reports. “We love it for fresh cows for a few days after calving, and for any type of swelling,” adds Karen, maintaining SCC of 40 to 50,000. “Udder Comfort gets quality back fast after calving. It’s awesome to see quick recovery,” says Jeni Malott, Misty Meadow Farm, Smithsburg, Md. The 130-cow herd averages 140,000 SCC. “For the mature cows that had elevated SCC at dry off, we make sure they get Udder Comfort for the first 8 to 10 milkings to start the new lactation, and all first-calf heifers as well,” she says. Candice White took the Udder Comfort fresh start challenge at her family’s 1000-cow Dotterer’s Dairy, Mill Hall, Pa. “This stuff is phenomenal,” she says about Udder Comfort. “It’s easy to use, and we see results. We use it regularly, spraying all fresh udders 3x/day for at least 2 days after calving (6 to 8 applications).” The her SCC averages 100,000. Near Osseo, Wis., Erica Lundberg’s passion is genetics and working with the cows, including some of the industry’s top cow families. She transitioned from a teaching career back to Bert-Mar Farms a few years ago. Her father Allan is energized by Erica’s enthusiasm rebuilding the 100-cow milking herd. “Of all the products we tried, nothing works like Udder Comfort. It’s our go-to” she says. “The biggest thing is what it does for fresh cows, especially first-calvers,” says Erica. “We apply it 1x/day for 3 days before calving and 2x/day 3 to 4 days after calving.
