The trouble is that life doesn’t work that way. Sheer willpower will not turn our frowns upside down into happy smiles for Jesus. The Christian church is not a big self-help group, where we simply forget our troubles by thinking happy thoughts to chase the blues away. Thankfully, Jesus has something better for us than simply happy thoughts. He gives us Himself. “Come to Me,” He says, “And I will give you rest.” It’s important to hear Him clearly. Left to ourselves we really don’t want rest from Jesus; we want rules. We’d like to know what we could do to improve our situation. We want to know what we can to do clean up our act and make ourselves over into better people. However, Jesus is not a self-help guru. He is not a moralist. He is a Savior! It sounds strange to hear Jesus first invite us to rest and then in the next breath to say, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” How can a yoke be easy or a burden light? When it is the yoke and burden of Jesus; that’s when! It is the yoke of the cross. On His cross Jesus pulled off the greatest exchange, the sweetest swap in all of history: He takes our sin and gives us His own righteousness. He takes all our sin away with Him into His death. His cross, that sign of death, is the sign of life and healing for us. This is what it means to be a Christian, to be baptized into the death and resurrection of Jesus, to bear the mark of the cross in this world. This is our calling. This is our yoke, but it is also our deep and lasting joy. For every burden, there is strength, in every sorrow, there is comfort, and in all distress, there is peace. It is the strength, comfort, and peace of Jesus Christ. This is a big part of why as Lutherans we put so much emphasis on Lent. It’s because as we reflect on Jesus’ work for us on the cross, we see most clearly the depth of love that He has for us. We understand that His suffering and death were meant to relieve us of weary hearts and burdened souls. Wherever Jesus is, there is rest for weary hearts and burdened souls. The risen and ascended Lord Jesus is present among us now, offering a Sabbath rest for all the people of God in this world. We have the high honor to come to Jesus where He has promised to be found- in His holy Church, where His Word is preached and His sacraments administered. Here He continues to bring healing for hearts that are weary and strength for souls that are burdened. Could You Use Some Rest?

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

When Jesus speaks those wonderful inviting words to come to Him, we who are “weary and burdened,” He sure grabs our attention! In his book, “Where in the World is God?” Rev. Harold Senkbeil says, “It’s not just the burden of our everyday work,” Jesus is referring to, “it’s the weariness of living.” Sometimes we scramble so fast in this world, just going about the business of day-to-day living, that the whole idea of rest seems foreign to us.

What can be done about it? Many people believe that the Christian faith is supposed to do the trick. Faith in Jesus will help us find a silver lining for every cloud.

God is Love Dear brothers and sisters in Christ: We hear all the time that God is Love. This is true, but what is meant here by “love”? What is love, according to the one true God: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit? According to the appointed scripture text for Ash Wednesday, God is abounding in steadfast love (Joel 2:13). In fact, this phrase “steadfast love” shows up in God’s Word more than 200 times. Merriam-Webster defines love as a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties, attraction based on sexual desire, affection based on admiration. Some even use the word “love” to mean “like”, such as “I love chocolate.” According to God’s Word, the Triune God sees love differently. For God, love is not subject to change. If we mess up, God still loves us. If we reject God, God still loves us. For the Triune God, love is forever. It is up to us in our free will, however, if we love God. But God will never forsake us as long as we follow Him. The Apostle Paul defines love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” The Apostle John tells us that those who love learned love from God in 1 John 4:7. “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.” As Christians, we learned what true love is when God the Father sent His one and only Son into our flesh to be our Redeemer. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Christ came into our flesh as the light amongst the darkness of the world. Even though the majority of the world followed the darkness, Christ still came, because of His love for us. Even in 2018, there is much darkness in the world. According to a Pew Research Center survey , of those who attend Christian services, only 36 percent attend once a week, 33 percent attend once or twice a month/or a few times a year, 30 percent attend seldom or never, and one percent didn’t know. God’s love is shown at each Divine Service. Where else could people receive forgiveness of sins, be given eternal life and

salvation? We are given this through God’s love beginning with our baptism when God adopted us as His child. Then repeatedly in the Divine Service, God comes to us in His law and gospel. God comforts the afflicted. God afflicts the comfortable. He does all of this because of His love for us. Then, for everyone who receives the Lord’s Supper, God again forgives our sins and strengthens our faith when we eat and drink Christ’s true body and true blood. The Apostle Paul concludes his definition of love writing, “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13). As Christians, we have faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. As Christians, we have hope in Christ’s second-coming as we will be raised from the dead as Christ raised from the dead. But there will be a time when we will no longer need faith and hope, either when Christ returns in glory to judge the living and the dead, or we die before that day. For on that day of Christ’s coming or our death, faith and hope will be fulfilled. But, as Paul said, “The greatest of these is love” because love will never cease. Happy Valentine’s Day! ~In Christ, Pastor Adelsen

Happy 2018 FLC members! Christian Education has started the new year by picking up right where we left off following the holidays. Tweens has been held twice since the new year started and averages about 15 kids on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month. It has been fun seeing the 4th – 7th graders come together, interact, and discuss the Bible lessons! One of my favorite parts about being a DCE is really getting to know the youth and families that I get to walk along side. This month I’ve had the opportunity to spend some time with smaller groups or individuals checking in and seeing how they are doing. High school youth group has been going well. We decided to go back to basics. Really taking the time to understand that God is present in His word, understand how to read the Bible and apply those stories to our lives. We want to make sure we give the youth the tools to understand that God is truly always with us. As we continue our confirmation year and approach the final months, please keep the kids in your prayers to stay connected in the church as they finish out their confirmation year. If you are reading this and you have a child that is 4yrs old through 7th grade, we have Sunday school starting at 9:15 AM each Sunday. Please consider having them participate. There is always something to learn. Make the most of your time and plan to attend adult Bible study while your child(ren) are at Sunday school. I hope and pray that your new year is full of God’s blessings.

Blessings ~Tori Kidd

First Edition Book Club From bestselling Christian author Karen Kingsbury comes a new book featuring everyone’s favorite family—the Baxter’s. The book is” Love Story”. From the day they met, John and Elizabeth were destined to fall in love. Their whirlwind romance started when they were young college students and lasted nearly thirty years—until Elizabeth died of cancer. So when John Baxter is asked to relive his long-ago love story with Elizabeth for his grandson Cole’s heritage project, he’s not sure he can do it. The sadness might simply be too great. But he agrees and allows his heart and soul to go places they haven’t gone in decades. Back to the breathless first moments, but also to the secret heartbreak that brought John and Elizabeth together. As school ends, Cole presents his report on the love story between his grandparents John and Elizabeth

Baxter. It is a tale that touches the hearts of the entire family, and one that causes Cole to better understand his own beginning. Whether you’re meeting the Baxter family for the first time or finding them all over again, the author tells us that Love Story will stir your heart and remind you of the generational impact of love and the eternal bond of family. We will be meeting on Tuesday, February 20th at 7:00 PM at Linda Donnay’s home. Contact the church office with questions or for more information.

Library News: The following books are missing from the church library: “AND THE SHOFAR BLEW” by Francine Rivers “LIGHT IN MY DARKEST NIGHT” by Catherine Marshall “VOICE IN THE WIND” by Francine Rivers “A TIME TO DANCE” by Karen Kingsbury “THE LAST SONG” by Nicolas Sparks “MOVING INTO A NEW YEAR” by Mildred Tengborn REVIEWS OF CURRENT BOOKS IN OUR LIBRARY THE SHACK by Wm. Paul Young – Mackenzie Philip's youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Years later, in the midst of his great sadness a strong feeling arises that he is to go back to that shack for the weekend. Against his better judgement, he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant, THE SHACK wrestles with the timeless question: Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain? About the author: Mr. Young was born in Canada and raised amongst a stone-age tribe by his missionary parents in the highlands of what was New Guinea. He suffered great loss as a child and young adult, and now enjoys living with his family in the Pacific Northwest. LIKE DANDELION DUST by Karen Kingsbury, When Joey Campbell's biological father is released from prison, four-year-old Joey faces a life no one could've planned. His father wants custody and a judge's quick decision delivers a devastating blow to the Campbell family: Joey must be returned to his biological parents. In a haze of grief and disbelief, the Campbell’s watch their adopted son pick a dandelion and blow the feathery seeds into the wind. In the days following the ruling, Jack Campbell conceives a desperate and dangerous thought. What if they can devise a way out? What if they take Joey and just disappear. LIKE DANDELION DUST? Karen Kingsbury is one of America's favorite inspirational storyteller having written more than twenty other emotionally gripping novels.

Did You Know? The potato pancakes served at the dinner are made from a handed-down potato pancake recipe which has been used for many years. All the potatoes are peeled by hand in the church basement food prep area for the 800 (+/-) guests who attend the dinner. The potato pancake batter is mixed with the recipe ingredients and fried on gas grills which have been specially set up for frying the pancakes for this event. In addition to the potato pancakes, there are regular pancakes also available. The sausage is made up from an original recipe put together for the First Lutheran Men’s Club Dinner. There are always extra sausages available after the Dinner which are available and sold quite quickly to First Lutheran members a week after the event. Also served with the pancakes are syrup, applesauce, cheese, and beverages. Depending on availability, ice cream treats may also be served.

The Men’s Network The Lutheran Hour Ministries Men's NetWork 2018 WORK DAY is all about men making a difference in their neighborhoods and communities. Men, is this the year we reach out to help someone in need? Do you know of a project which men from the Men’s Network could help with? Saturday, April 28, 2018, is the sixth annual Lutheran Hour Ministries Men's NetWork WORK DAY. This event is a chance for

guys across the country to tackle jobs and projects that will benefit their neighborhoods and communities. Ideally, work will be done off the church campus. Each group signing up will receive a Men's NetWork cap to wear the day of the event. Here’s a short list of why working on a project not located on First Lutheran, Glencoe, or St. John Lutheran property makes sense: It gets men from our churches branching out and making some community connections. It’s kind of what the Gospel is all about, isn’t it -- taking our service and message to the streets? Right now is an excellent time to begin thinking about the kinds of projects the Men’ Network could do. In the past Lutheran Hour Ministries Men’s Network has seen home construction and structural repairs; the building of wheelchair ramps and walkways; painting, hauling, sweeping, sanding, mowing, digging, planting, and the like. Those who sign up for WORK DAY projects really get into it, and it's a pleasure to hear their stories and see their pictures when their efforts are finished. The time commitment is minimal (part of one day), but the long-range benefits to those being served and those who do the work go a long way. “But you, man of God ... pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith.” 1 Timothy 6:11-12 donations. Our sincere appreciation for your support or FLS!

Simply Giving (Vanco Payment Solutions) First Lutheran offers Electronic Giving as a way to automate your offerings, tuition, or any type of giving you might be considering. The electronic process is convenient for you and provides much-needed consistency for the church and school. Offerings received in the offering plates can fluctuate significantly from week to week but when contributions are automated, the church receives funds on a steady, uninterrupted basis. It is by the grace of God and through the contributions of our generous members that we are able to carry on our work here at First Ev. Lutheran Church and School. You may sign up on our website at firstglencoe.org... click on the word (or tab) “giving” at the top of the home page. Then click on the “online giving” button down on the left side. He was born and baptized in January 1932. Baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, that’s when the Triune God first made his home with Dad.

At his confirmation, Dad’s designated verse was John 14:23…..”If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

My Dad served his country in the Korean War. He went through things most of us can only imagine. In a Korean river, my Dad stood up for his buddy who was baptized by the Army chaplain. He shared his faith with those around him. I’m sure my Dad got through the sorrows of the war by clinging to the promise that God would be with him always and make his home with him.

Dad was a dairy farmer who cared well for his animals and the land. He was a good neighbor and friend who always helped whenever he could.

Dad continued in the word of God his entire life. He read his Bible so much that he kept it together with duct tape. He rarely missed church and the opportunity to receive the Lord’s body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. When he no longer had the strength to go to church, he gladly received the word and sacrament at home, and finally in the nursing home. During his last week, when it was difficult for him to read the Bible himself, he asked me to read it to him. He kept and treasured the Lord Jesus Christ’s word. God made his home with Dad, and God has now given him a new home in heaven. Submitted by Cindy Eggersgluess

(Thank you fellow members of FL…….for your prayers, sympathies, and kind words during my Dad’s illness and passing. It has meant so much to me!)

Thank You to:

If you get two families to register, you get $400! Spread the good news that First Lutheran School is a great place to learn about God’s love and the awesome world he has given to us!

Spelling Results

On Friday, January 12, four spellers representing First Lutheran School took part in the local Scripps spelling bee. Participants who won our school competitions and advanced were Elise Betcher, Abigail Gruber, Maggie Schuft (subbing for Kyle Hagen), Rachel Pixler, and Lauren Betcher. All students represented their school well and Elise and Rachel made it to the second to last round.

Our Largest school get-together and Fundraiser

The eleventh annual First Lutheran School Silent Auction and Luncheon will take place on March 5th. This is by far the biggest fundraiser we have. For an auction to be successful, you need people who donate items and people to bid on them. Please consider helping our children out by being one, or better yet, both of these people. Auctions are a great way to have an enjoyable time as people get together to contribute to a worthwhile event. It will be great to see the entire church and school community pulling together for fellowship and socializing all in the support of a common cause. The silent auction runs from 9:00am to 1:00pm followed by a live auction and the luncheon (delicious pulled pork sandwiches, whiskey baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, dessert and drinks) runs from 11:00am to 1:00pm. The Silent Auction Committee is still seeking donors, helpers, and bidders for this great event. A list of donated items can be seen at our website www.firstglencoe.org. Don’t be left out. Be a part of something meaningful. Invite friends and members of the community to show what First Lutheran is doing. A portion of the proceeds will be used for technology development as well as updating needed items for the classrooms. Consider now, ways in which you can contribute!

Preschool / Kindergarten Open House

On February 22, FLS will be hosting an Open House for all perspective 3 and 4-year-old preschoolers as well as perspective kindergarteners. All interested families are encouraged to attend to see firsthand how God’s love will be shared with students as they also learn about His wonderful world. Please spread the word that FLS is the place where students are “nurtured in spiritual and academic growth”.

Second Trimester Chapel Offering

The offerings collected during the second trimester are designated specifically to spread the gospel in the country of Cambodia. The designated chapel offerings will go directly to LHM–Cambodia. Students can see how their mission dollars will spread the Good news of salvation through Jesus Christ to the people of Cambodia. Students will witness first-hand the important role of global mission and ministry as they become agents for "Bringing Christ to the Nations - and the Nations to the Church."

Youth Investors Program

The Youth Investors Program (formerly K.I.D.S. Stamps) is an ongoing program. Students can bring their deposits on Thursdays and carry out transactions after chapel services in the church. YIP is a way for kids to save money and help our Church Extension Fund as well.

12

Ongoing Fundraisers

We are collecting: Box Tops, Coborns receipts, Campbell Soup labels, Kwik Trip milk tops, and Country Hearth labels. Our last check was for over $260 from the Box Tops program and we usually receive a large check from our Coborn’s receipts. Our most recent Kwik Trip tops earned us a check of $166.35. Keep up the good work!

National Geographic Bee Results

On Monday January 22, FLS held its annual geography bee. Eight contestants competed for the school championship. Students involved were: Colin Bernstein, Jackie Lemke, Beau Christensen,, Kolby Lindemann, Seth Mathews, Elise Betcher, and Dylen Terlinden. After many rounds, came out on top followed by Elise Betcher in second and taking third. Alaina will now take a test to see if she qualifies for the state bee held in March. Great job students!

School Cancelations or Early Out Information

School closings and late starts are carried on KDUZ, KARP, and WCCO radio stations and on television stations WCCO (4), and KARE (11). First Lutheran follows the Glencoe-Silver Lake Schools for all weather closings. Parents should use their judgment (ESPECIALLY WHEN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL IS NOT IN SESSION) on travel safety when the public school has not been closed. During inclement weather, parents may take their child(ren) home at any time during the day by reporting to the school office by phone or Fast Direct. The dismissal time announced on radio and TV stations is the time the first building dismisses. If the announced time is 12:00, First Lutheran dismisses at 11:50. On mornings with late starts scheduled classes (band, chapel, etc.) that meet before 10:10 are canceled for the day. You may dial 864-2499 (1) for cancellation or postponement of the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District. Parents should have a plan devised in advance with their children on what to do when school is dismissed early due to weather.

Third Grade News

Third grade students have been learning about slow and quick changes to landforms. They learned about the Ring of Fire and watched a volcano form in a farmer's field in Mexico. They watched a landslide almost coming down upon a vehicle. Mystery science has been an exciting addition to our program. In our religion lessons, they are currently learning about prayer and specifically the Lord's Prayer. They continue to improve their fluency in reading and are using strategies that help them with comprehension such as finding the main idea and details, summarizing a story, and working with weekly vocabulary words. In math the students are finding fractions that equal one, mixed numbers, equivalent fractions, and probability. They continue to learn strategies that help them with problem solving. The students are starting a new unit in social studies that deals with American culture. They started with stories that have been told and passed down such as myths, tall tales, legends and the like. They will learn to read a cutaway diagram and a population map. They have also been memorizing the states of each region of the United States. They just finished a unit in English on verbs and are starting the next unit on adjectives and adverbs. The students are also very excited to be taking part in archery for Physical Education class. They are really improving on their form and technique.

Overview of Checkbook Funds as of 1-25-2018

2017-2018 Fiscal Year

This report is only of our Checking Account at 1st Minnesota Bank. It contains the Accounting Funds

listed. Within the next few months, the payments (in parentheses) will be made. Unless our income

from offerings increases or somehow utilities decrease, we will need to tap further into our line of credit.

You're welcome to email your questions to me, Debi Ramirez, or the Church Finance Committee; Chris

Kruschke, Les Engelmann, Mark Schmitz, Kathy Schiroo, and Cindy Eggersgluess.

This analysis assumes that we will receive enough income to cover our regular monthly expenses

(wages, utilities, etc.). If not, we will need to further draw from our $50,000 Line of Credit. Note that

interest of 5.25% will also be due on all borrowed monies.
