As I write this article, we are in the swirling

world of Holy Week services. When I look at

my April calendar, I notice that there are no

major events or holidays, only Arbor Day

4/27, Earth Day 4/22, and the anniversary of

the sinking of the Titanic 4/15! April looks

like it will be a wonderful month when we

will be able to enjoy living in the joy and free-

dom that was fulfilled and proclaimed to us at

Easter time. But will we allow ourselves to

live in this joy and freedom or will we let our-

selves be knocked around by all the distrac-

tions, judgments, fears and unknowns that

seem to come at us from all directions at the

most unexpected times?

If there is anything I have learned in this past

year, it is the great truth that all we really have

is what we can feel, see, touch, and hear

RIGHT NOW. It is a gift. That is why it is

called the present. That doesn't mean we

should live a carefree or careless life right

now… I like what all good campers say, ―we

must always be living in such a means that we

leave our campsite or better yet, our planet, in

better shape than the way we found it, or were

born into it.

Please allow April to be a time to practice that

joy and freedom in we all long for. Walk on

the beach. Start that new hobby you always

wanted to begin. TAKE UP YOGA, surf, sail,

scuba, read, write, hike, meditate. Begin a reg-

ular practice routine with your favorite instru-

ment (except if they are bagpipes…) or go to

the Iolani Palace or the Bishop Museum!

April is a wonderful oasis in the year. Drink

your fill and stay focused on what matters

most. Dispel angry thoughts, worthless grudg-

es and regrets. Let go of needless fear and

doubt! You are a Child of God! Live in that

promise… while you can!

See you in church!

NOTES FROM TOM

It was ―Aloha Friday‖ and the downtown traffic

was unusually heavy. I had just run errands and I

was thinking about supper. I was heading home.

All I needed to do was slide over into the turning

lane and make a left onto King.

The driver of the car in the next lane wouldn’t let

me over. I turned my signal on. He sped up. I

waved my arm out the window. He sped up. I

stuck my head out the window, waved my arm,

and had my turn signal on. HE SPED UP! He was

not going to let me in front of him!

I couldn’t believe it. What a jerk! I had to stop

traffic in my lane in order to merge into the turn-

ing lane all because the jerk wouldn’t let me in

front of him. I made the turn onto King, but what

I really wanted to do was to follow the man and

ask him why he refused to let me over. I wanted

to tell the man, ―I hope you don’t live your life

like you drive your car!

I’ll never know why the man was rude. Maybe it

was an emergency. Maybe he was late for an ap-

pointment. Maybe he didn’t like the color of my

car. Maybe he didn’t like the baldness of my

head, or the whiteness of my skin. Maybe it was a

control/power issue. Maybe he didn’t see me.

Maybe he was a jerk.

The bottom line for me is not that he wouldn’t let

me over. The bottom line is how I chose to re-

spond. I responded by holding the mirror up to

my own face. I asked myself how many times I

had been rude, not only in driving, but in dealing

with people. I asked myself how often I had let

unimportant things affect how I viewed the

world. I asked myself what good does it do to

―put other people in their place.‖ Who wins?

You see, I cannot control how other people treat

me, or relate to me, or what they think of me, or

especially how they drive. But I can control how I

relate/react to others. Jesus didn’t say, ―live your

life so that you please everyone, and everyone

loves you.‖ Jesus said to love your neighbor with-

out expecting anything in return.

I have been thinking about the rude driver as a re-

minder of what it means to be a follower of Christ

not only on Sundays or when the traffic is easy. I

have been thinking about this driver as a reminder

of what it means to be a follower of Christ when

the world is too much with us, and when the

―fussy‖ people are in control. I have been thinking

about this driver in these days when there seems

no hope for compromise, and a refusal to simply

practice the give and take of getting along.

Kelly Willard, who was born in Winter Haven,

Florida, in 1956, says it this way:

Make me a servant, humble and meek,

Lord, let me lift up those who are weak;

And may the prayer of my heart always be:

Make me a servant, make me a servant,

Make me a servant today.

In this glorious Easter season, keep singing even

when surrounded by jerks! Remember to love

your neighbor.

See you in worship—

The Stephen Series is a complete system for training

and organizing laypeople to provide one-to-one Chris-

tian care to hurting people in and around your congre-

gation.

Founded in 1975, the Stephen Ministries organization,

based in St. Louis, Missouri, has helped more than

11,000 congregations implement Stephen Ministry.

These congregations represent more than 150 denomi-

nations and come from all 50 states, 10 Canadian prov-

inces, and 23 other countries.

Stephen Ministers provide high-quality, confidential,

Christ-centered care and support to people experiencing

grief, divorce, cancer, job loss, loneliness, disability,

relocation, and other life difficulties.

The Stephen Ministry Difference

With Stephen Ministry--

Pastors don't carry the burden of being the congre-

gation's sole caregivers. They have a team of gifted,

trained, committed lay caregivers ready to minister to

hurting people inside and outside the congregation.

Laypeople have a chance to use and strengthen

their leadership and caregiving gifts in meaningful min-

istry--serving others while experiencing tremendous

spiritual growth.

People who are hurting no longer suffer alone. A

caring Christian friend comes alongside them to provide

emotional and spiritual care for as long as the need per-

sists.

For more information regarding becoming a Stephen

Minister or to receive care from a Stephen Minister,

Please contact Pastor Tim Mason (808) 377-5104 or

John Travis at (808) 371-2557.

Stephen Ministries

Stephen Ministry training classes are being held

every Tuesday at 6:30pm in the Loft.

Please contact John

Travis if interested at

371-2557 or by e-mail

at [email protected]

The next Adult Forum will be on

Sunday, April 7, 2013 From 8:45 to 9:45 in Hale Aloha

We will be learning about the parable of the sower as found in Matthew and how it

relates to our ocean and marine life.

Special members of our congregation will join us to share their knowledge and ex-

periences. Come and bring a friend!

* A great big mahalo for all you real-life angels who have helped us reach our fundraising goal of $10,000! To be doubly blessed, Thrivent Lu-theran has gifted us with matching funds of 50%- that's $15,000! These donations will help serve our ever-growing number of guests by fill-ing our ever-depleting shelves, stocking our laundry and shower facilities, and making our purchases at the Hawaii Food Bank. Many thanks to our wonderfully supportive and gener-ous community! * Remember: we are open to serve our guests every Thursday and Friday (except the first Fri-day) 9-3 at Angel Network. We pack up bags of food every Wednesday evening. C'mon down and volunteer! The more the merrier! * For you financially curious folks, here is a breakdown of our 2012 Sources of Revenue. 7% Thrivent and Hawaii Food Bank 34% CBTS Subsidy 3% Interest & Fundraising 43% ANC Individual Donations, including Hunger Walk 5% CBTS Individual donations 8% Other donations * Shocking statistic ... The number of guest we have served since 2009 has increased by a WHOPPING 88%. Mahalo for your continued support!

Pop on over and say hi to Mac and our great vol-unteers or lend a hand.

All are welcome!

[email protected]. We also ask that as prayers

are answered that you submit their name again for a
