Dear conference attendees, Dear colleagues, Dear friends,It is a great pleasure to welcome you in Ljubljana for the 13th annual CIVITAS conference. The conference has always been an important opportunity to learn from each other, to showcase achieved results and promote new approaches in development of sustainable urban mobility. It has also been an important occasion for networking, establishing new partnerships among participants and exchange with the European Commission.
We are sure that also this year’s CIVITAS Forum will meet those expectations and will significantly contribute to further define and implement innovative, smart and sustainable solutions in European cities and beyond, aimed at providing equal access for all and consequently contributing to a well-integrated city. It will also be an opportunity to learn about the further support of the European Commission to the development of sustainable urban mobility through its policies, funding programmes and networking. Participants will thereby gain new knowledge, share their experience and join hands in common striving for an even greener future.
We invite you to take the opportunity also to discover Ljubljana, a CIVITAS Forum participating city since its beginning. We believe you will share our enthusiasm towards the city and its far-reaching achievements that brought Ljubljana the European Mobility Week award twice as well as the prestigious title of European Green Capital 2016.
We wish you to enjoy the conference, the city and the company of fellow participants. We are sure it will inspire you further for innovative activities that bring long-lasting improvements in sustainable urban mobility and contribute to better share our cities.

SITE VISITS AND ON-SITE WORKSHOPS
Ljubljana, © D. Wedan LjLubljana, © Volker Hoffmann
1 - The pedestrianized Ljubljana
To enable sustainable modes of urban mobility, especially walking and cycling, Ljubljana has renovated a large amount of public open spaces. From 2007 an ecological zone in the city center was systematically created and improved. The area now covers 91,244 m2 and is still being enlarged. Additionally, next to the pedestrian zone, there is a 32,666 m2 of area with restricted local traffic for residents only (24/7). The ecological zone comprises over 30 streets, offers six times larger surface for pedestrians and cyclists, has many new bridges for pedestrians and cyclists and a transport on demand service free-of-charge with electric vehicles – Kavalir. Site visit participants will get an insight in the vivid experience of the new use of public space in the city center and along the Ljubljana river banks.
2 - Architectural cycling tour
The site visit tour by bike will enable an insight in the city cycling infrastructure, its strong points and elements that still could be improved. Together with the cycling experience inside and outside the city center, cycling chic attendants will have the opportunity to see Ljubljana’s architectural marvels of the most famous architects like Maks Fabiani, Jože Plečnik, Vladimir Šubic and Ivan Vurnik.
Due to the flat city configuration, the tour is not physically demanding and is completely safe, but limited up to 20 people.

3 - Sustainability brings back the Roman Emona
The implementation of sustainable mobility measures (new parking policy, pedestrian area, calming street…) re-discovered cultural heritage and enlightened the period of Roman Emona from 2000 years ago. Reconstruction of the Congress Square (2011) in the city centre was inspired by ambitious goal of returning the public space to the people. In order to spread the pedestrian zone, cars were removed from the surface to the newly constructed underground garage. Public underground car-park development presents a successful contemporary case of archaeological heritage integration into a modern urban structure. What would otherwise be an obscure underground passage has now become a museum with the in-situ remains of the original Roman road and a virtual museum interpretation of the life on it. Last but not least, the site visit will enable an insight into the findings from ancient Emona that where just recently discovered while sustainable transforming the main avenue in 2015 - Slovenska street.
4 - Public Transport at a glance
The tour will start in the city centre with an overview and demonstration of the measures for impaired people (from “call on demand” service to identity card), followed by a demonstration of the e-vehicle Kavalir, which operates toll-free in the pedestrian zone. The journey will continue through the recently reconstructed main avenue in the city centre - Slovenska Street, where improved conditions for
pedestrians, cyclists and PT were introduced. Dedicated bus lanes on Celovška Avenue, which were implemented beyond CIVITAS demo area, but in strong correlation to the successful demonstration measure within CIVITAS ELAN, will be presented as well. At the end of the tour, a decade of introduction of alternative fuels for buses (biodiesel, hybrid and CNG) will be presented at the bus operator’s center.
16
This year’s social evening has been envisaged in a slightly different way: a free-of-charge networking event with strong team-building elements that would connect us even more while doing activities relevant to sustainable urban mobility together in an amusing way. The social evening will be organised in a barn - Orehov gaj a rural site just 15 minutes from the city centre by bus (transportation provided). While having dinner in a very relaxed atmosphere, you will be invited to actively participate to activities, performed in larger or smaller groups. For that purpose, you will be asked - while registering at the Forum – to sign-in for one of the following activities in which you’ll contribute with your talent, will or skill:
SOCIAL EVENING
• choir singing (limited number)• flash mob performance• cycle chic performance (limited number) • journalist reporting (limited number)
We would like to keep some elements of surprise, so we are not disclosing all the details. Let’s just re-assure you that it will not be a demanding engagement but a very pleasant, amusing and fun experience. Informal clothing with a spare warm sweater is highly recommended.
Venue: Orehov gaj
