Dear Supporters,

As this newsletter commemorates our 40th anniversary, the timeline included highlights our growth. As we look back on our forty years, there are many people to thank. The reason for people inc.’s success is the dedication of former and current Board Members, committed staff, families, financial supporters, elected officials and community partners.

Throughout the decades, our mission has expanded to include a wider variety of services to meet the needs of people with developmental disabilities, senior citizens and our community. over the years, people inc. has achieved distinctive milestones of quality in every service area including health, housing and rehabilitation. Today, people inc. serves more than 10,000 individuals with special needs, their families, and seniors each year across Western new York.

Thank you for your confidence in people inc. and for your ongoing support!

President ’s message

James M. Boles, ed.D., president and Chief Executive Officer

Dear Friends,

Forty years ago: gas cost 36 cents a gallon and stamps were six cents. And in Western new York, people inc. was just about to fill a void for individuals with disabilities and their families.

Much has changed, especially the way we view the care and treatment of people with developmental disabilities. Forty years ago, we did not know as much as we do today about Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and Autism. We also did not know what our parents and grandparents might need as they age. if not for a small group of parents and professionals, and a committed Board, we would not be making the impact we are today. people inc. opened its first group home on Granger place in Buffalo in 1971 and started an umbrella agency for erie county to help identify services for families in need. now, people inc. serves eight counties.

in recent years, people inc. and other area nonprofits serving individuals with developmental disabilities have monitored the nation’s fiscal challenges and new York State budget cuts. At the forefront, changes from the nYS office for people with Developmental Disabilities (opWDD) will shape available services of the future. The “people First Waiver” will bring significant programmatic, fiscal and administrative reforms. Based on a State-administered standardized assessment tool, an individual resource allocation will eventually need to cover all supports ranging from residential assistance to various forms of healthcare. We will do our best to ensure continuity of care for those we support, and assist families and caregivers. our goal, as always, is to provide innovative and quality services.

proud parents norine and Joseph Kawczynski had six children, and have enjoyed the full life that a busy home brings. it was their son Joseph that brought them to connect with people inc. more than 30 years ago.

loyal supporters since the early days, the Kawczynski’s made their first gift to people inc. in 1985, and have continued donating over the years.

Mrs. Kawczynski remembers that time well: “Mr. Boles used to hold meetings downtown about ‘aging out’ – my husband and i attended those…There was a day care in Buffalo back then but really nothing else for my son at that point in time. When people inc. let us know about plans to expand to care for people with multiple disabilities – our son uses a wheelchair and has mental retardation – we were so happy that he could attend a program in east Aurora, and later orchard park. Back when Joe was 7 years old, we got a letter from the State assuring us that we wouldn’t get in trouble for keeping him home from school – that’s what it was like back then, just no help around.”

Six years ago, Joseph moved into a people inc. group home. “We kept him home as long as we could, we just couldn’t physically do it anymore… i know he is very happy there – i can tell,” she shared. “i visit him and wheni leave there’s no fuss. And when he visits me and it is time to go, he puts on his coat as quickly as he can – he is going home! i know he likes to see me – and i’m so happy that he is so well cared for. it is wonderful what you’re doing, all his siblings and i are thankful. it gives me peace – internal peace – to know that he’s being cared for so well.”

Mr. ed Reehling is 93 years young, and remembers some very happy times at people inc.’s residences at Dewitt, Sheridan and now at newton. His 30 years of residence in people inc. group homes has brought many years of joy to him, but more importantly he has brought joy to the lives of many staff, friends and the community. Ask those that know ed or as many affectionately call him “eddie,” they will say, “eddie doesn’t say a lot - but when he does say something – he says what he means!

people inc. Training Director David Mack-Hardiman is eddie’s guardian and has known him for 27 years. When asked about eddie, he stated, “He’s an extremely enthusiastic person who is very expressive, and those that know him love him, because he tells it like it is, loves the holidays, loves horses and really is a true inspiration to all of us…he still goes to day program at age 93!” ed doesn’t miss a day at claddagh commission incorporated in Angola. According to staff, “eddie can get upset when he knows it is cancelled or it is the weekend. now that’s a work ethic!”

The staff at newton residence also gathers inspiration from eddie. According to Rose, a staff member, “eddie is so friendly and loves to go out to his favorite pub/restaurant and have his shots of juice or tea, and always will count each shot down ‘1. 2. and 3.’ eddie’s favorite time of the year are the holidays, especially christmas when he loves to see ‘pApA,’ who is Santa claus,” said Rose.

When you see someone who has such a happy demeanor and zest for life, you can’t help but be inspired and appreciate the full life that eddie has had with his friends and community through people inc. When asked about the secret to such longevity, many said it is his wonderful smile. others think it is his love of cookies; he has also been affectionately called the “cookie monster” at newton. Whatever it is: confection or affection, eddie lives his life to the fullest every day.

in four years, People inc. has evolved from a five-man team to

the current staff roster of 43, including social services workers, rehabilitation workers and support staff.”

1970sThe agency opened the first of many group homes on Granger place in Buffalo. A Mobility Training program was developed to assist hundreds of individuals with developmental disabilities in learning to use public transportation. The first of the agency’s Day programs was the Day Activity center in east Aurora; central park plaza Day Treatment center in Buffalo later followed.

1990sThe agency broadened its scope by offering senior programs and additional health services, as well as services for individuals with developmental disabilities. The first low-income senior living apartment complex was opened for 50 seniors in Hamburg. The agency assumed operation of the Seniors Unlimited Adult Day program for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development,

people inc. was awarded the national Best practices Award for commitment to excellence in the area of supporting housing opportunities. The elmwood Health center in Buffalo opened its doors, providing a multitude of health services to the community.

Additional services for children expanded with the first residential program for children. The Kids on the Block of WnY community outreach program began in schools and focused on disability education by utilizing puppetry.

Residential options for individuals with developmental disabilities expanded through the creation of a Transitional Housing project for homeless individuals with developmental disabilities. A home care model, the consumer Directed personal Assistance program, was developed. Through this program, the first of its kind in erie county, individuals were able to hire, direct and supervise their personal care aides.

The Museum of disABiliTY History, dedicated to the preservation of the history of individuals with disabilities, was created. The Museum acquired its first artifact, a J.n. Adam paperweight, and purchased a pair of children’s crutches.

As the decade came to a close, the agency legally changed its name to people inc. in an effort to better represent its overall mission and the wide range of people who benefit from the variety of its services.

2000sin the 2000s, individualized programming expanded. Young Adult

life Transitions, a community-based program offering young adults

with developmental disabilities an opportunity to experience

life on a college campus, began at Daemen college. Six local

colleges now participate. The Arts experience, a fine arts day

habilitation program offering an array of music, drama, writing,

dance and art classes, opened in cheektowaga. Residential group

longtime Business Supporter: Scotch ‘n SirloinThroughout people inc.’s history, the Supported employment program has been in existence over the last 25 years with approximately 400 business partners with the agency. people inc. is pleased to recognize Scotch ‘n Sirloin in Amherst as a long-time supporter of the Supported employment program.

For 24 years, Martinnias Hardy, a program participant, has been employed at the restaurant as a maintenance technician. co-owners of the Amherst restaurant took Marty under their wings to provide guidance to help him with not only technical skills, but also his social interactions. They insisted on giving the accolades to Martinnias, whom they affectionately call Marty, and to Dale Stampfer, program administrator.

co-owners Joe Delany and Kevin Hanlon treat Marty as a member of their family. Although Marty originally started with sweeping the restaurant, he now helps with overall maintenance as well as set-ups for events. Kevin shared that he has seen Marty’s skills improve through the years. “We are the lucky recipients of the program,” Kevin said. “Marty is a joy of my life and i could not do this without him.”

When asked why other businesses should partner with the program, Joe said that there is a good chance that the workers will stay on the job. He encouraged other businesses to get involved because there are various supports from people inc. that are available. Joe also said that “reliability” is a key component along with a lot of personal satisfaction for everyone.

Thank you to Joe and Kevin at Scotch ‘n Sirloin and all of the local businesses who partner with people inc.’s Supported employment program to enrich the lives of employers and employees.

one of the agency’s longest employees, Betty Mcclamb, took some time out of her day to reminisce about working for people inc. over her 39 years. She will celebrate 40 years in August. currently an instructor at Main Street Day Habilitation in Buffalo, she oversees Unit 1, which includes seniors with developmental disabilities. She particularly enjoys working with the seniors as she can see their advancement. Betty said that her daughter was in kindergarten when she started working for the agency – and now her two daughters are 42 and 40. in addition to raising her daughters, Betty is also a foster parent for erie county. over the years, she has helped 20-25 girls and currently has one foster daughter. Here are some of Betty’s fondest people inc. memories:

What other roles have you had with the agency over the years?i started as in intake worker in 1972 – when people inc. was a referral agency. 13 people worked here when i started. i never thought it would get this big. i have worked here with all the past executive directors: John, Ted, reggie and now Dr. Boles. i also did relief work for 10 years.

When asked what a typical day is like with the individuals she serves, Betty focused on the community and socialization projects. Betty shared that they do projects for Buffalo city Mission’s cornerstone Manor and the Buffalo olmsted parks conservancy. They grew a garden on north Hampton Street in Buffalo with Buffalo Re-Use company. program participants also grow and donate plants regularly at the day habilitation.

What are some of your best memories?in 1975, we went on the Attica Arcade train ride….the hours of program were much longer then. Another memory is when Ella Fitzgerald did a concert fundraiser for people inc. at shea’s.

The best part of my job now is being able to make plans for the whole week and carrying them out for the individuals in the unit.

Why would you tell others to work at people inc.?it is a great agency to work for – there is advancement…and it is very rewarding. i consider it a lifetime job.

longtime employee Betty mcclamb reminisces

it can be said that lois cammarata did not find people inc., but rather people inc. found her. lois’ relationship with people inc. began on July 20, 1979, while she was attending Sunday services at immaculate conception church in east Aurora. A young woman with Down syndrome inched her way across a church pew and sat next to lois, eventually lying down and putting her head in lois’ lap. The young woman did not want to leave without lois. The staff member who accompanied her explained to lois that they were from the Main Street group home. lois went back with them to the group home and visited with the other residents. A week later, lois returned to complete an employment application, was hired part-time and eventually a full-time employee.

The way in which lois began what would ultimately become a 26-year career with people inc. exemplifies the qualities she exhibited throughout her life: compassion, care and kindness. commenting on the rather fortuitous circumstances that brought lois to people inc., lois’ friend and co-worker Marcia ergort said, “Was there some divine intervention that occurred that day to bring lois to us? i guess that is for each of us to answer ourselves.”

lois served a variety of positions throughout her career. She worked as a relief staff member; managed, opened and supervised sites; and ensured quality of services. However, while lois’ role at people inc. often changed, one thing remained the same regardless of her role: her ability to touch the lives of all she encountered. lois shared her friendship and talents throughout

her entire people inc. career. in addition to her administrative roles, lois was a mentor, a friend and a teacher. lois’ legacy continues not only through the interactions she had with people, but also through the lois cammarata Memorial Fund through the people inc. Foundation, which was established by her friends and colleagues after her passing in november 2005 as a way to remember her. An annual scholarship in lois’ name is awarded through a committee of some of lois’ family and dearest friends, who arrange an enjoyable evening recognizing the winner of the scholarship.

perhaps the statement that aptly captures lois’ legacy is the profound and poetic description by people inc. staff member and friend David Mack-Hardiman, who likens lois to “the rarest star of all—the shooting star which goes from one end of the sky to the other and bathes everything and everyone in their path with beauty, with light, with warmth and with love.”

employees initially received limited training. There was no formal training regarding topics like medication distribution or Strategies for crisis intervention and prevention-Revised (Scip-R) classes.

people inc. began with less than 10 employees.

people inc. did not offer services to children.

people inc. started in one building.

people inc. administrative offices formally functioned very differently when referring to technology. Typewriters and carbon paper were previously used.

people inc.’s Supported employment program started with 15 people in a garage.

Derogative terms to refer to a person should never be accepted. Years ago, terms to describe someone’s condition were words such as “idiot,” “mongloid,” and “mentally retarded.”

There were no strict rules, regulations or specific guidelines to follow.

The people inc. Foundation has hosted many fundraising events throughout the years to benefit people inc. one of the popular events was the people inc. 5K Rat Race, which was held in downtown Buffalo. The race attracted thousands over a 10-year period of the event being sponsored.

Today, direct care employees participate in two full weeks of training. in addition, they attend training reunions for another day of presentations. The Training Department has added many on-line segments for mandatory updates and informational training sessions.

There are currently more than 2,500 staff members, making people inc. one of the largest non-profit employers in Western new York. According to Buffalo Business First, people inc. is one of the top 25 employers in the area.

Today, 30 percent of disability services are geared toward children and young adults, including programs such as early intervention, educational Advocacy, Respite Services, Transition Services and Young Adult life Transitions.

Today, people inc. operates more than 120 locations throughout Western new York. We are probably in your neighborhood! people inc. serves many people in their private homes as well.

The Mill Street group home in Williamsville was the first residential site to use a computer. With improved technology, computers and cell phones, communication is now instantaneous. The agency’s information Technology department manages computer software and networks. The elmwood Health is now using electronic Medical Records to improve efficiency. people inc. is also attentive with social media technology through Facebook and Twitter.

Today, the Supported employment program has grown with over 600 participants and involves more than 300 local businesses.

Today, the preferred language to explain a person’s condition would be to use the proper diagnosis such as “Down syndrome” and to refrain from using the “R” word. The term “intellectual disability” is preferred. person-first language is encouraged in the human service industry when writing and speaking about individuals who have an intellectual or developmental disability.

The people inc. Quality Assurance Department is committed to helping the agency provide the type of environments and experiences that each of us would want if we were individuals of people inc.’s services. people inc. has been designated as a coMpASS agency by the new York State office for people with Developmental Disabilities (opWDD) as a top provider of quality services. coMpASS supports and recognizes provider agencies that exceed regulatory compliance and achieves excellence in service delivery.

These events not only raise funds for the mission, but also increase awareness about the programs and services people inc. provides.
