• Keys to success
So the Vision for the Program
was…..
5 year collaborative programme to:
1. reduce mortality rates by 15%
2. reduce adverse events by 30%
3. develop and build a culture of patient safety and quality improvement
4. build long term sustainability through increased capacity and capability
for improvement at all levels within participating organisations
5. build on existing work and integrate other national and local initiatives
into a coherent whole
6. achieve 95% reliability in all care processes identified in the
programme
7. create the ability to share learning on a regional, national and
international basis
Traditional approach to introduction of
new ideas
• Usually imposed from ‘on high’
• Piloted in one area with enthusiasts
• “If it works here – it will work anywhere’’
• Spread to entire organisation by dictat
• 12 months later it is as if the new idea had never
existed!
• Spray and Pray- but ‘hope is never a plan’
• Improvement Science is a body of knowledge that
describes how to improve safely and consistently.
• Improvement Science is not the same as Research.
• Research is designed to find out what is possible.
• Improvement Science is not the same as Audit.
• Audit is designed to find out what is actual.
• Improvement Science describes how to reduce the gap
between what is actual and what is possible.
