Introduction to characters

This introduction to the characters is important as they are the main characters in the rest of the film. It shows them in equilibrium in the opening of the film and further follows on to the disruptions in the film but these are not included in the opening.

Shaun is introduced in equilibrium where he thinks it is just another normal day of his life. Shaun is introduced at the beginning so we know that he is clearly the main character of this film. Other characters in the film are introduce too like Liz and her two friends and Shaun’s best mate who he lives with.

Setting up Plot

‘Propps sphere of action’suggests that most films plots begin with an equilibrium, then a disruption occurs and it finishes with a new equilibrium.

The opening starts with Shaun and his friends sitting in the pub having a drink. This is a typical equilibrium opening of the film. The opening of this film doesn’t connote that something bad is going to happen although typical action horror films can tend to connote this in the opening of the film.

The costumes of Shaun, his girlfriend and mates conveys that they are just normal average people who have gone to the pub after work or something as Shaun is clearly in a shirt which is his work clothes. This signifies normality.The setting is a pub which is signifies a friendly happy environment where the characters feel comfortable in. This setting could be significant in the rest of the film, as the character may seek comfort and safety as this is an action horror

Mood and tone (non diegetic

music)

The mood of the music is thoughtful, it connotes someone thinking about things as it is quite slow but has an upbeat rhythm to it.

The non diegetic at the beginning of this trailer isn’t very typical of an action horror film But Shaun of the Dead is part comedy genre too.
